Original Document Release.

When using the Virtual Connect Support Utility (VCSU) or HP Smart Update Manager (HP SUM), the potential exists for Virtual Connect firmware upgrades from Virtual Connect (VC) Firmware Version 3.18 (or earlier) to fail on a single module when updating to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60.

During the firmware upgrade to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60, VCSU reports 40% complete in excess of 90 minutes before exiting due to timing out. An error message similar to the following will be displayed.

HP SUM will report the firmware component status "Update returned an error":

The HP SUM Log will report "VC Enet Activation Failed":

All the VC Modules that were updated successfully to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60 will be fully operational.

The following upgrade paths are NOT affected:

  • Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.18 (or earlier) upgrading to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.51 (or earlier).
  • Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.30 (or later) upgrading to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60.
  • Any Virtual Connect enclosure without a Domain present (Bare Metal) is NOT susceptible to this issue and can perform Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60 upgrades without workarounds.

SCOPE

Any of the following HP Virtual Connect modules, in HP BladeSystem configurations, that are upgrading the Virtual Connect Firmware from Version 3.18 (or earlier) to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60.

  • HP Virtual Connect 1/10 Gb-F Ethernet Module for c-Class BladeSystem
  • HP Virtual Connect 1/10 Gb Ethernet Module for c-Class BladeSystem
  • HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module for c-Class BladeSystem
  • HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10Gb/24-port Module for c-Class BladeSystem
RESOLUTION

To correct issues that have occurred after attempting to upgrade the firmware:

  • If the Virtual Connect Domain is currently exhibiting this behavior, log into the Onboard Administrator (OA) and perform a Reset of the module that failed to update to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60.

AND

  • If the Virtual Connect Domain contains VC-FC modules, reset each VC-FC module manually via the OA to activate their firmware. HP recommends waiting for 2 to 3 minutes between each VC-FC module reset to avoid SAN outages.

No further action will be required after the reset is complete.

Future Updates to Virtual Connect Firmware:

Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.70 will resolve this update issue (without having to perform a workaround) in configurations using the following modules:

  • HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module for c-Class BladeSystem
  • HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10Gb/24-port Module for c-Class BladeSystem

Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.70 is targeted for release before the end of September 2012.

This advisory will be updated when more information is available.

Workaround Options:

Upgrade workarounds from Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.18 (or earlier) to Virtual Connect Firmware 3.60:

To update Virtual Connect Domains from Firmware Version 3.18 (or earlier) to Virtual Connect Firmware 3.60, perform one of the following workaround options.

Note: The workaround options can be performed on all the Virtual Connect modules listed it the Scope section.

Workaround 1:
Use HP SUM Version 5.0.1, available in the HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2012.02.0 or VCSU Version 1.6.0 and update from Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.1x (or earlier) to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.51. Once that update is complete, then update from Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.51 to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60 (using HP SUM Version 5.0.1 or VCSU Version 1.6.0).

OR

Workaround 2:
Use VCSU Version 1.6.0 and update from Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.1x (or earlier) to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60 using the "Parallel" option for Ethernet modules instead of the default of Odd/Even.

Note: Using this switch will activate ALL modules in parallel and should only be used when upgrading a bare metal (no domain) enclosure, or when a complete network outage is acceptable.

OR

Workaround 3:
Use VCSU Version 1.6.0 and update from Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.1x (or earlier) to VC Firmware Version 3.60 using the "Manual" option for Ethernet modules instead of the default of Odd/Even.

Note: This will require the VC Administrator to determine connectivity has been restored before resetting the next module.

OR

Workaround 4:
Use HP SUM Version 5.1.0 or VCSU Version 1.6.0 and update from Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.1x (or earlier) to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 3.60.

Note:
VCSU: Perform this upgrade with the understanding that VCSU will stop responding at "Activating firmware - 40% complete," but will eventually timeout and exit, typically in 60-90 minutes. When the timeout occurs and VCSU exits, login to the Onboard Administrator and "reset" the Virtual Connect Module running VC Firmware 3.1x (or earlier) to complete the activation.
OR
HP SUM: Perform this upgrade with the understanding that the Virtual Connect Firmware Component will stop responding, eventually timeout, and exit typically in 60-90 minutes. When the timeout occurs and HP SUM exits update, login to the Onboard Administrator and "reset" the Virtual Connect Module running 3.1x (or earlier) to complete the activation.
