HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer Series - Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection

Introduction
This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. The wireless setup instructions are specific to a wireless network that uses an access point, also referred to as an infrastructure network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your printer.

NOTE: If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
Click the plus sign ( ) next to your operating system for more information.
Windows XP
Follow these steps in the order presented for the Windows XP operating system.
NOTE: Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before you install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network. If you need detailed steps see set up the hardware .
Step one: Prepare for the installation
Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
  1. Turn on the printer, access point, and computer.
  2. Connect your computer to the wireless network.
  3. Close any unnecessary applications running on your computer.
Step two: Decide whether to install with the CD or download the software
Before you install the software, choose an installation method. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use.
  CD Download the software from the HP website
For a new printer: The CD method is recommended for new printers and provides two installation options:

If you do not have the CD, you can download the software.

For an older printer: CD installation might not work if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.

Downloading the software provides the best results for your older printer. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.

About the software: The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release. The software you can download from the HP website is the most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the printer and CD release to the market.
Step three: Install the printer software
To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation fails.
Method one: Install the software with the CD
Select either the Basic Installation (no Internet connection needed) or the Go online (Internet connection needed) option using your printer CD.
Option one: Basic CD installation
Use the basic CD installation if you do not want to go online to download the software.
During the installation, the Basic Device Software is required to enable full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If the installer does not start automatically, click Start ( ), click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  3. In the installation window, click No thanks, I prefer the basic CD installation .
  4. Select your printer software, and then click Next .
  5. Accept the installation agreements, and then click Next .
    NOTE: It might take several minutes for your computer to install the printer software.
  6. When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
  7. Select from the following wireless setup options:
    • Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays on the computer
      HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays on the computer.
      NOTE: HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Wireless Setup Wizard.
      1. Select Yes, send and store my wireless settings on the printer , and then click Next .
      2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
    • Option two: The 'Printer Network Connection’ screen displays on the computer
      Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the Printer Network Connection screen displays on the computer.
      1. From the Home screen on your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon ( ). The Wireless screen displays.
      2. If you see a connection status such as Not Connected or Wireless Direct: Off , select I see a status such as Not Connected or Wireless Off (or I am not sure) on your computer. Click Next . The Wireless Network Connection screen displays on your computer.
      3. Follow the instructions on the Wireless Network Connection screen to select settings from the Wireless Status screen on your printer control panel. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard , and then follow the instructions on the printer control panel.
      4. When the Wireless Setup Wizard has finished connecting your printer to the network, select Yes (the blue wireless light is on solid) on your computer. Click Next , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
Option two: Online CD installation
Follow these steps to download the software and install it on your computer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Insert the product CD.
  3. When the installer starts, click Go Online . The most recent software downloads to your computer and starts the installation.
  4. Select your printer software, and then click Next .
  5. Accept the installation agreements, and then click Next .
    NOTE: It might take several minutes for your computer to install the printer software.
  6. When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
  7. Select from the following wireless setup options:
    • Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays on the computer
      HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Method two: Download and install the software from the HP website

Step one: Download the software
Follow these steps to download the software and save it to your computer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Go to Get Software and Drivers to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page.
  3. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
    • If prompted to enter your product number in the window .
      1. Type your printer number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar printers.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
    • If prompted to select your operating system .
      1. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
  4. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  5. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  6. Click Download .
  7. If the File Download Security Warning window displays, click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  8. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the folder where you saved the file in case you want to install it later.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE: If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it.
  2. Click Next to accept the default location, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for the installation.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
  4. When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .
Step three: Select the wireless connection setup option
Select from the following wireless setup options:

      3. Follow the instructions on the Wireless Network Connection screen to select settings from the Wireless Status screen on your printer control panel. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard , and then follow the instructions on the printer control panel.
      4. When the Wireless Setup Wizard has finished connecting your printer to the network, select Yes (the blue wireless light is on solid) on your computer. Click Next , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
Method two: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to download and install the software.
Step one: Download the software
Follow these steps to download the software and save it to your computer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Go to Get Software and Drivers to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page.
  3. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
    • If prompted to enter your product number in the window .
      1. Type your printer number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar printers.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
    • If prompted to select your operating system .
      1. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
  4. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  5. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  6. Click Download .
  7. If the File Download Security Warning window displays, click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  8. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the folder where you saved the file in case you want to install it later.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE: If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it.
  2. Click Next to accept the default location, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for the installation.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
  4. When prompted to select a connection type, select Wireless , and then click Next .

Step one: Prepare for the installation
Follow these steps to prepare for installation.
  1. Turn on the printer, access point, and computer.
  2. Connect your computer to the wireless network.
  3. Close any unnecessary applications running on your computer.
Step two: Install the software
To install the printer on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click or tap unblock , accept , continue , yes , allow , or permit . Otherwise, the software installation fails.
Method one: Use the HP Printer Install Wizard (Recommended)
The HP Printer Install Wizard quickly and easily finds the best Windows 8 print driver for your printer. To save time, try using this automated tool instead of the other installation methods in this document.
NOTE: The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers, and is available only for the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.
What does the Printer Install Wizard do?
Following are some common installation problems that the HP Printer Install Wizard can help with:
  • You cannot find your driver for Windows 8
  • You need help using your HP printer in the same way you used it with your old Windows operating system
  • You are not sure which driver you should select
NOTE: The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers. This wizard is available only for Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating systems.The HP Printer Install Wizard works with printers connected with a USB cable or with a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network connection. If you would like to connect your printer wirelessly, but it is not yet on a wireless network, you need to temporarily connect the printer with a USB cable to run the wizard.
Step one: Download the wizard

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the HP printer and to the computer, if it is not already connected to the computer or the network.
  3. Make sure that your computer has an Internet connection. The wizard must access the Internet to work correctly.
  4. Click Next to begin the utility. The wizard displays a list of detected products.
  5. If the wizard detects more than one printer, select your HP printer from the list.
    •  Is your printer not in the list?
      If your printer is not in the list, click My Printer is not listed , and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. The wizard automatically displays the best available driver for your HP printer.
    • If a full feature driver is available , the wizard detects it. Click Next to download and install the software. For full functionality, HP recommends installing the full feature driver if it is available.
      • What is a full feature driver?
        This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
    • If an in-Operating System (in-OS) driver is available , the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It also supplies a link to more information about using the in-OS driver with your printer.
      • What is an in-OS driver?
        An in-OS driver is a basic driver that is already included in the operating system. You do not need to download or install any software from HP.
    • If a Windows Update driver is available , the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It will also supply a link to more information about using a Windows Update driver.
      • What is a Windows Update driver?
        When you connect the USB cable to the printer, and then to the computer, or Windows 8 detects that the printer is on the same network as the PC, Windows activates Windows Update. Windows Update searches online for the most recent printer driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver. The Windows Update process takes place automatically.
    • If an alternate driver is available , the wizard supplies a link to learn how to install and configure the alternate driver for your printer.
      NOTE: Alternate drivers are supported by Windows 7 only.
      • What is an alternate driver?
        For some products that do not have a driver available, there might be another compatible driver that you can use instead.

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up : Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  5. Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:
    • You previously installed the printer for a USB connection and now want to switch to a wireless network connection :
      1. Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock.

Should I install using the software CD?
Installing with the product CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.
Important : If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work . Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads to install the latest product software for the newer operating system.
Should I download from HP Software & Driver Downloads?
The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • You no longer have the product software CD
  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released

Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.
Important : If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work . Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads to install the latest product software for the newer operating system.
Should I download from HP Software & Driver Downloads?
The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
  • You no longer have the product software CD
  • You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released
Step three: Install the software
Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Method one: Install the software with the printer CD
Follow these steps to install the software with the printer CD.
Step one: Install the software
  1. Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer.
  2. Double-click the HP software disc icon that displays on the desktop. The HP Software window opens.

  3. Double-click the HP Installer icon. The Welcome to the HP Installer window opens.

  4. Click Continue , and then click Agree to accept the Software License Agreement.
  5. When prompted, select your printer, and then click Continue .
  6. When prompted, select the installation option, and then click Install .
    NOTE: The HP Recommended software provides full support for your printer.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Step two: Select the wireless connection setup option
Select from the following wireless setup options:
Option one: The 'HP Auto Wireless Connect' screen displays on the computer (initial setup only)
HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically gathers your current network information from your computer, and then applies it to your printer through the wireless connection in order to connect the printer to the same network. Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays on the computer.
NOTE: HP Auto Wireless Connect is offered for up to 120 minutes after initial printer setup. After that time, the installation defaults to the Wireless Setup Wizard.
  1. Select Yes, send and store my wireless settings on the printer , and then click Next .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Option two: The 'Wireless network connection’ screen displays on the printer control panel
Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the Wireless network connection screen displays on the printer control panel.
  1. From the Wireless menu, touch Settings .
  2. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard , and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Method two: Download the software using the printer CD
Follow these steps to download the software and install it on your computer.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Insert the product CD.
  3. When the installer starts, click Go Online . The most recent software downloads.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the software.
Method three: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to download and install the software from the HP website. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that uses the printer wirelessly over the same network.
Important : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation fails.
Step one: Download the software
  1. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the plus sign ( ) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
    • If prompted to enter your printer in the window :
      1. Type your printer number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar printers.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
    • If prompted to select your operating system .
      1. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
    The Select Software and Drivers page opens.
  2. Click the plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  3. Click Download only . If your browser opens a new dialog box, you might also need to click Save or Save File .
    The file downloads to your computer, and the HP Software window opens automatically.
    NOTE: If the HP Software window does not open, double-click the HP Software icon on the desktop.

  4. Double-click the HP Installer icon. The Welcome to the HP Installer window opens.

  5. When prompted, select your printer, and then click Continue .
  6. When prompted, select the installation option, and then click Install .
    NOTE: The HP Recommended software provides full support for your printer.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
NOTE: Make sure that you have already completed the hardware setup of your printer before you install the software and set up the printer on a wireless network. If you need detailed steps see set up the hardware .
Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running the Mountain Lion operating system.
NOTE: Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original product CD or from the HP website.
Step one: Prepare for installation
  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up : Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
      To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access : Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  5. Select one of the following options for steps to continue with the installation, depending on if you previously installed for a USB connection:
    • You previously installed the printer for a USB connection and now want to switch to a wireless network connection :
      1. Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock.
        NOTE: HP Utility is also located in Applications/Hewlett-Packard folder.
      2. Click Applications , and then double-click HP Setup Assistant .
      3. Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection.
    • You did not previously install your printer for a USB connection :
      Continue to the next step to proceed with the installation.
Step two: Install the software
Use the following steps to install the printer on the wireless network. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE: To install the product software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website. The product CD is not supported in Mountain Lion, and Apple Software Update does not support steps for connecting to the wireless network.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
    • If prompted to enter your product in the window .
      1. Type your printer number in the window.
      2. Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar printers.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
    • If prompted to select your operating system .
      1. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.
  3. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  4. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  5. Click the option that you want to download.
    A page displays with more information about that option and the specific items that it includes.
    NOTE: HP recommends the Full Feature type of download, if available, to take advantage of all your printer features.
  6. Click Download . If your browser opens a new dialog box, you might also need to click Save or Save File .
    The file downloads to your computer.

  7. Double-click the icon above the file name. The computer extracts the files and displays a disk image file icon above the printer name.

  8. Double-click the disk image file.
  9. Double-click the HP Installer icon.
    The HP Installer program opens.
  10. When prompted, select your printer, and then click OK .
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Step three: Connect the printer to the network
Select one of the following options for steps to connect the printer to the network.
NOTE: HP Auto Wireless Connect is available in most network and computer environments for 120 minutes after you turn on the printer for the first time. After 120 minutes, the wireless connection method defaults to the Wireless Setup Wizard.
Option one: HP Auto Wireless Connect (initial setup only)
Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the HP Auto Wireless Connect screen displays on the computer.
  1. Select Yes, send and store my wireless settings on the printer , and then click Next .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation and wireless network setup for the printer.
Option two: The Wireless Setup Wizard
Follow these steps to set up your wireless connection when the Wireless network connection screen displays on the printer control panel.
  1. From the Wireless menu, touch Settings .
  2. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard , and then follow the on-screen instructions.
