HP All-in-One Printers - A 'No Scan Options' or 'Scan settings are not set' Message Displays on the All-in-One
Issue
When you try to start a scan from the printer control panel, one of the following error messages displays on the printer:

Windows XP
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.
If you need to scan immediately, you can use the following scanning workarounds instead of troubleshooting.

For instance, if the printer connects to the computer over a network you might only be able to scan using the Embedded Web Server (EWS). Scan with Paint
Windows XP provides a basic set of scanning drivers, also referred to as Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) drivers, which you can use as an alternative to scan a document when you cannot scan using the HP drivers.
To scan a document using Paint in Windows XP, follow these steps.

Scan from the Embedded Web Server (Network only)
Follow these steps to scan a document from the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).

The printer must be connected to a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network to access the EWS. You cannot access the EWS with a USB connection. |
Step one: Get the printer IP address
In order to access the EWS, you will need to know the IP address assigned to your printer on your network. You can find your printer's IP address in multiple ways, though options vary by printer.
Press the Wireless
button on the printer control panel to view the network settings.
Access the Network
menu on the printer control panel.
Print a network configuration page or wireless network test page.
Prompted to enter your printer name/number in the search box?
If you are prompted for additional information, use the following steps to access your printer support page.
Type your printer's name and number in the search box, and then click Next
.
If necessary, select your model in a list of similar printers.
In a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, open a new window or tab.
In the address bar, type the product IP address given on the test page, and then press Enter
on your keyboard.

The EWS\Printer information page opens.
Continue to the next step.
Step three: Scan with the EWS
Browse to the Scan
tab of the EWS.

under administrative tools to enable the function. |
Specify the document type, color preference, paper size, resolution, quality, and brightness.
Click Start Scan
.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Restart the computer and reset the printer
Follow these steps to restart the computer and reset the printer.
Step one: Restart the computer
On the Windows taskbar, click Start
( 
), and then click Shut Down
( 
).
From the What do you want the computer to do?
drop-down list, click Restart
, and then click OK
.
Step two: Reset the printer
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
With the product turned on
, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( 
) to turn it on.
Step three: Try the scan again
Try scanning again from the printer control panel.
If these steps resolved the issue
, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists
, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Set up the scan settings
For enhanced scan functionality, the Full Feature HP software for your printer includes either HP Solution Center or HP Director. This valuable software helps you complete scan jobs and offers a friendly user interface with available scanning shortcuts. To use HP Solution Center or HP Director, you must have the Full Feature HP software installed. If you do not have the Full Feature software installed, go to HP's
Get Software and Drivers
page to download and install the software.
Follow the steps to set up the scan settings for your software.

HP Solution Center
Follow these steps to set up your default scan settings in HP Solution Center.
Step one: Open HP Solution Center
Open HP Solution Center with one of the following methods:
Click Settings
, and then click Scan Settings
.
Step two: Set up the default scan settings
Use HP Solution Center to set up the default scan settings with the following options.
Prompt for settings when scanning from the control panel
Select this option to have the HP software prompt you for any changes you want to make to the scan settings before completing the scan job (recommended).
If you do not select this option, the HP software uses default scan settings when completing the scan job.
Show preview scan
Select this option to have the HP software generate a preview of the scan each time you scan. This allows you to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is complete (recommended).
If you do not select this option, you will not see a preview of your scanned document before the scan job is complete.
Add or remove scan shortcuts
To add a scan shortcut, select the scan shortcut that you want to add, and then click Add
.
To remove a scan shortcut, select the scan shortcut that you want to remove, and then click Remove
.
After you make any changes, click Update the device
to refresh the list of scan shortcuts available from the printer control panel.
Set up destinations where scans are sent
To add a Scan to
destination, select the destination that you want to add, and then click Add
.

After you make any changes, click Update the device

The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. This tool is available only for Windows operating systems. The tool is not available for Mac OS X operating systems. |
Click the following link to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements, and then click Download
.
When the Security Warning
dialog box opens, choose one of the following methods to download the utility.
The Print and Scan Doctor opens, searches for installed printers, and then displays the list.

Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
From the Product
column in the Print and Scan Doctor, select your HP product.
Click Next
. The Print and Scan Doctor checks the connection for your product and, if the connection fails, it offers options to help.

Once the Print and Scan Doctor determines that your printer is installed and connected, you can select an action.

Step three: Resolve diagnosed scanning problems
In the Print and Scan Doctor results screen, view the list of results.
If you see only green check marks
( 
), the tool did not find any problems.
If you see green wrenches
( 
), the utility identified an issue and corrected it automatically.
If you see yellow exclamation points
( 
), the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
If you see a red X
( 
), follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
When you have finished fixing all the diagnosed problems, click Test Scan
or Skip
.
If you click Test Scan
, the Print and Scan Doctor launches the HP scanning software to perform a test scan. Follow the on-screen instructions in the scanning software to perform the test.
If you click Skip
and are not experiencing additional issues, click Quit
to exit the tool.

Solution four: Make sure that the Digital Imaging Monitor is ready
The HP Digital Imaging Monitor (DIM) software must be running in order to scan from the printer. If the software is running, the HP DIM icon ( 
) appears in the lower-right area of the taskbar on your computer screen.
If the HP DIM icon appears in the taskbar
, skip to the next solution.
If the HP DIM icon does not appear in the taskbar
, follow these steps.
Click Start
, and then click Run
.
In the Open
text box, type msconfig
, and then click OK
.
In the System Configuration Utility
window, click the Startup
tab.
Search the list for HP Digital Imaging Monitor
.
If HP Digital Imaging Monitor is not on the list
, the driver was not correctly installed or a custom install was used. You need to reinstall the software. Skip to the solution in this document to uninstall and reinstall the software.
If HP Digital Imaging Monitor is on the list
, continue with these steps.
Select the HP Digital Imaging Monitor
check box.
Click Apply
, and then click Close
.
Click Restart
to restart the computer.
Try scanning again.

Solution five: Uninstall and reinstall the HP software
Follow these steps to uninstall and reinstall the Full Feature HP software for your printer.

: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable or Ethernet cable, disconnect the cable
from the HP printer now. |
Step one: Uninstall the software
Try the HP Uninstaller first, and if that does not work, uninstall from the Windows Control Panel.
Method one: Run the HP Uninstaller
Click Start
, and then click All Programs
.
Click the HP
or Hewlett Packard
folder, and then click the folder for your printer. The folder is labeled according the printer series number.
If there is no folder for your printer, skip to the next method.
Click Uninstall
or Uninstall Software
, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Use the following information to determine which option to choose when you remove the software:
| Uninstall all HP printers associated with this device

Select this option if you do not have another HP printer that might be sharing some software. |
| Choose which HP printers to uninstall

Select this option if another HP printer shares some software. |
- Restart the computer.
Method two: Uninstall the software using Add or Remove Programs
Click Start
, click Control Panel
, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs
. A list of programs installed on your computer opens.
Find your HP printer driver in the list. The driver might not be listed by printer name. Look for the printer type, such as Photosmart, Officejet, PSC, or Deskjet. For example:
If your printer driver does not appear in the list of installed programs, continue with these steps to remove any other HP software that you do not need.
Click the driver, and then click Remove
or Change/Remove
. When the process completes, select the option to restart your computer later.
Check the list of installed programs for other HP software components.
Remove any other HP software components that you do not need by clicking Remove
or Change/Remove
. If prompted, select the option to restart your computer later.
- Restart the computer.
Step two: Reinstall the software
Follow these steps to download and install the most current Full Feature software package available for your printer.
Disconnect the USB cable or the Ethernet cable from the printer, depending on your connection type.

If the printer connects to the network wirelessly, you can leave it connected during the installation. |
Turn the product on.

Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
Click the Plus sign (

Click More Info
, and then read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions

Click Download
. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
Click Save
, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.

. The software downloads to your computer.

Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.

How to scan from the Embedded Web Server (Network only)
Follow these steps to scan a document from the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Step one: Get the printer IP address
In order to access the EWS, you will need to know the IP address assigned to your printer on your network. You can find your printer's IP address in multiple ways, though options vary by printer.
Press the Wireless
button on the printer control panel to view the network settings.
Access the Network
menu on the printer control panel.
Print a network configuration page or wireless network test page.
Prompted to enter your printer name/number in the search box?
If you are prompted for additional information, use the following steps to access your printer support page.
Type your printer's name and number in the search box, and then click Next
.
If necessary, select your model in a list of similar printers.
In a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, open a new window or tab.
In the address bar, type the product IP address given on the test page, and then press Enter

Select this option to have the HP software prompt you for any changes you want to make to the scan settings before completing the scan job (recommended).
If you do not select this option, the HP software uses default scan settings when completing the scan job.
Show preview scan
Select this option to have the HP software generate a preview of the scan each time you scan. This allows you to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is complete (recommended).
If you do not select this option, you will not see a preview of your scanned document before the scan job is complete.
Add or remove scan shortcuts
To add a scan shortcut, select the scan shortcut that you want to add, and then click Add
.
To remove a scan shortcut, select the scan shortcut that you want to remove, and then click Remove
.
After you make any changes, click Update the device
to refresh the list of scan shortcuts available from the printer control panel.
Set up destinations where scans are sent
To add a Scan to
destination, select the destination that you want to add, and then click Add

Button settings
You can set up the default printer control panel button settings with the following options.
Prompt for settings when scanning from the control panel
Select this option to have the HP software prompt you for any changes you want to make to the scan settings before completing the scan job (recommended).
If you do not select this option, the HP software uses default scan settings when completing the scan job.
Show preview scan
Select this option to have the HP software generate a preview of the scan each time you scan. This allows you to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is complete (recommended).
If you do not select this option, you will not see a preview of your scanned document before the scan job is complete.
Create a new Scan Shortcut
Review the default Scan Shortcut Settings for the selected Scan Shortcut, and change any basic settings as desired.
Click or tap Save Shortcut
.
Type a new Shortcut Name
and an Abbreviated Name
, and then select a new icon.
Click or tap Save
. The new icon displays in the Scan Shortcut list.
Delete a Scan Shortcut
Click or tap the Scan Shortcut that you want to delete.
Click or tap Delete Shortcut
.
Click or tap Yes
to confirm the deletion.

NOTE:

If the Delete Shortcut
button is grayed out after selecting a shortcut, that shortcut is integrated into the software and cannot be deleted. |
Add or remove Scan Shortcuts
To add a Scan Shortcut, select the shortcut that you want to add, and then click or tap Add
.
To remove a shortcut, select the shortcut that you want to remove, and then click or tap Remove
.
After you make any changes, click or tap Update the device
to refresh the list of shortcuts available from the printer control panel.
Scan to... setup
Change the following options to set the 'Scan to...' preferences for scanned items.
To add a Scan to
destination, select the destination that you want to add, and then click or tap Add
.
To remove a Scan to
destination, select the destination that you want to remove, and then click or tap Remove
.
After you make any changes, click or tap Update the device
to refresh the list of Scan to
destinations available from the printer control panel.
Solution three: Use a tool to resolve the issue automatically
Follow these steps to download and run a tool to resolve scanning issues automatically.

The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. Click or tap the following link to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements, and then click or tap Download
.
When the Notification Bar opens, download and run the utility.
Run the utility
Click or tap Run
in the Notification bar to download and run the software.
Click or tap Yes
in the User Account Control window.
The Print and Scan Doctor opens, searches for installed printers, and then displays the list.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
From the Product
column in the Print and Scan Doctor, select your HP printer.
Click or tap Next
. The Print and Scan Doctor checks the connection for your printer and, if the connection fails, it offers options to help.

Once the Print and Scan Doctor determines that your printer is installed and connected, you can select an action.
Step three: Resolve diagnosed scanning problems
In the Print and Scan Doctor results screen, view the list of results.
If you see only green check marks
( 
), the tool did not find any problems.
If you see green wrenches
( 
), the utility identified an issue and corrected it automatically.
If you see yellow exclamation points
( 
), the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
If you see a red X
( 
), follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
When you have finished fixing all the diagnosed problems, click or tap Test Scan
or Skip
.
If you click or tap Test Scan
, the Print and Scan Doctor launches the HP scanning software to perform a test scan. Follow the on-screen instructions in the scanning software to perform the test.
If you click or tap Skip
and are not experiencing additional issues, click or tap Quit
to exit the tool.

Click or tap the Support and Troubleshooting
link that displays in the last Print and Scan Doctor window. You will be directed to support options that are tailored to your printer. Click or tap the HP Support Forum

Solution four: Make sure that the Digital Imaging Monitor is ready
The HP Digital Imaging Monitor (DIM) software must be running in order to scan from the printer. If the software is running, the HP DIM icon ( 
) appears in the lower-right area of the taskbar on your computer screen.
If the HP DIM icon appears in the taskbar
, skip to the next solution.
If the HP DIM icon does not appear in the taskbar
, follow these steps.
If necessary, right-click or tap and hold the lower left corner of the Start screen, and then click or tap Desktop
.
On the Windows 8 Desktop, locate the DIM icon (

Solution five: Uninstall and reinstall the HP software
Follow the steps to uninstall and reinstall the HP software for your connection type.
Step one: Uninstall the software
Follow these steps to remove the print driver and other software.
USB
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer (if it is connected).
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap Programs and Features
. A list of currently installed programs opens.
Click or tap your HP printer's name, and then click or tap Uninstall
.
Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.
What if an error message displays during the uninstall?
If an error message displays while you are uninstalling the software, follow these steps.
Click or tap OK
to close the error message.
Click or tap the bottom left corner of the screen to switch to the Start screen.
Move the mouse or tap the top or bottom right-hand corner of the screen to open the Charms Bar
.
Click or tap Settings
.
Click or tap Tiles
.
Move the slider bar under Show administrative tools
to Yes
.
Click or tap the bottom left corner of the screen to switch to the Start screen, and then click or tap the Print Management

Double-click or double-tap All Printers

Solution one: Check the Printers list and connections
Follow these steps to troubleshoot the connection between the printer and computer.
Try printing a document from an application on your computer.
If you can print successfully, skip now to the next solution.
If you cannot print, continue with the steps in this solution.
Make sure that the printer appears in the Print & Fax folder.
On the upper-left corner of the computer desktop, click the Apple menu icon ( 
), and then click System Preferences
on the drop-down menu.
Click Print & Fax
to open the Printers
list.
If the printer appears in the list, continue to the next step in this solution.
If the printer does not appear in the list, follow these steps:
Click the Add button ( 
), select your HP printer from the list, and then click Add
. After a few seconds, the printer displays in the Printers

Check the connection between the computer and the printer:
USB connection
:
Make sure that the cable is plugged in securely. If you are using a hub or docking station, disconnect the USB cable from the hub or docking station and connect it directly to the computer.
Wired network connection
:
Make sure that you are using an Ethernet cable (not a telephone cable), and that it connects securely to the printer and wired access point.
Wireless network connection
:
Make sure that the printer is on the network. You might need to re-add the printer to the network. For general wireless setup information, go to the

. If you need specific wireless installation instructions for your printer, click the Support & Drivers

Select the printer to uninstall, and then click Uninstall

When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password, and then click OK

Click Library

Click and hold the cursor on the first file that starts with "HP," and then drag the file to the Trash
icon on the taskbar. Complete this step for each file that starts with "HP."

When the disk permissions repair process is complete, restart your computer.
Step three: Download and install the latest software
Follow these steps to download and then install the most current Full Feature software package available for your printer.
Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
Turn the product on.

From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD

Click the Hewlett-Packard
folder.
Double-click the HP Uninstaller
, and then click Continue
.
Select the printer to uninstall, and then click Uninstall
.
When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password, and then click OK

From the Macintosh HD
menu, click Users

Click the correct user name.
Click Library
.
Click Preferences

Click and hold the cursor on the first file that starts with "HP," and then drag the file to the Trash
icon on the taskbar. Complete this step for each file that starts with "HP."
Close out of Preferences

icon on the taskbar, click the Empty

. Wait for authentification to complete.
Double-click the PPDs
folder.
Double-click the Contents

Locate your printer in the printer list, and then right-click on your printer and select Move to Trash

Wait a couple of minutes to make sure that the printer is ready, and then Try scanning again.
If these steps resolved the issue
, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists
, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Uninstall and reinstall the software
Follow these steps to uninstall, and then reinstall the HP software.
Step one: Uninstall the printer software
You might encounter installation issues if an earlier version of the printer software is installed on the Mac. Click the plus sign ( 
) for steps to uninstall the software, depending on how you previously installed it.
You installed with the CD that came with your printer, or you downloaded the software from the HP website
Open Finder
, and then click Applications
in the left pane.
Click the Hewlett-Packard
folder, and then double-click HP Uninstaller
.

If the Hewlett-Packard folder is not listed in Applications, continue to the next method to uninstall software downloaded from Apple Software Update. |
Follow the instructions to uninstall the software. Repeat these steps until the Hewlett-Packard folder is no longer listed in Applications.
You installed the software using Apple Software Update
Click your Desktop background so that the Menu bar displays Finder
next to the Apple icon ( 
).
From the menu bar, click Go
, then click Go to folder
.
Type /Library
, and then click Go
.
Open the Printers
folder.
Open the PPDs
folder.
Open the Contents
folder.
Open the Resources
folder, and then delete any items that begin with HP
.
Step two: Repair disk permissions
From Macintosh HD
, click Applications
.
Click Utilities
.
Double-click Disk Utility
.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Make sure that you are on the First Aid
tab, and then click the Repair Disk Permissions
button at the bottom of the window.
When the disk permissions repair process is complete, restart your computer.
Step three: Install the software
Choose one of the following methods to install the software.
Important
: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB or Ethernet cable, disconnect the cable from the printer now.
Method one: Download and install the software from HP Software & Driver Downloads
Follow these steps to download the software from the HP website. HP recommends this installation method for all new and older printers.

If the software for your printer is unavailable to download from the HP website, see the steps in this document to install the software using Apple Software Update. |
Turn on the printer.

Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
Click the Plus sign ( 
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download.
Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions
( 
) for complete download instructions.
Click the option that you want to download.
A page displays with more information about that option and the specific items that it includes.

HP recommends the Full Feature
type of download, if available, to take advantage of all your printer features. |
Click Download
. If your browser opens a new dialog box, you might also need to click Save
or Save File
.
The file downloads to your computer.

Double-click the icon above the file name. The computer extracts the files and displays a disk image file icon above the printer name.

Double-click the HP Installer
icon.
The HP Installer
program opens.
When prompted, select your printer, and then click OK
.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Method two: Install the software with the printer CD
Important
: Depending on the release date of your printer, the software CD that shipped with your printer might not be supported in Mountain Lion. To make sure that you install the most current software, HP recommends that you download and install the software from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
Insert the Macintosh product CD into the CD drive of the computer. The HP Installer
program opens.

If the installer does not open automatically, double-click the CD icon on the desktop to open the installer. |
When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK
.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Step four: Try the scan again
After successful installation, Try scanning again.
