HP Deskjet 3050 (J610) All-in-One Printer Series - Installing the Printer Software in Windows for a Wireless Network Connection
Introduction
This document contains instructions to install the printer in an existing
wireless network that uses an access point
, such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure
network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for the wireless connection to your printer.

You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection. |

Follow these steps to install the software for Windows XP.
Step one: Prepare for installation
Important
: Please review the following items before continuing with the steps in this document.
Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
A computer that is connected to the wireless network (To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your particular access point.)

If you set up device filtering on your access point, and need to find the IP or MAC address of your HP printer, see the Additional information and resources

Your wireless-capable HP printer (Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.)
Administrator privileges or password
A USB cable (required only for a USB wireless network setup, not necessary when connecting via Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
WEP key or WPA security passphrase

To gather the SSID and the WEP key or WPA security passphrase, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, contact the manufacturer, or see the section that describes how to get your network information. |
Make sure that the printer, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
Exit all applications running on your computer.
How to get your network information
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor
. If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password.

Step two: Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
Use one of the following methods to connect the printer to a wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).

This step requires a WPS-enabled wireless router. If you do not have a WPS-enabled wireless router, continue to the step to decide whether to install with the printer CD or download the software. |
Method one: Push button
On the HP printer control panel, press the Wireless button ( 
). The Wireless Menu
displays.
On the Wireless Menu, press the button ( 
) next to Settings
.
Press the button ( 
) next to WPS
, and then press the button ( 
) next to Push Button
.
The printer prompts you to press the WPS button on the wireless router.

The printer starts a timer that allows about two minutes to press the WPS button on the wireless router. |
Press the WPS button on the router. The printer automatically finds the wireless network and configures the connection.
Method two: PIN
On the HP printer control panel, press the Wireless button ( 
). The Wireless Menu
displays.
On the Wireless Menu, press the button ( 
) next to Settings
.
Press the button ( 
) next to WPS
, and then press the button ( 
) next to PIN
. The printer displays a PIN to type into the wireless router.

Access the WPS settings for the wireless router, and then input the PIN into the correct field. These steps vary by manufacturer.
The printer automatically finds the wireless network and configures the connection.
Step three: Decide whether to install with the printer CD or download the software
Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD!
You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

CD installation might not work
if you are installing the printer on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP printer released.

Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.

The software on the CD is current to the date of the printer release. |
The software you can download from the HP website is the most current software available for your printer. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the printer and CD release to the market. |
Step four: Install the printer software
To install the printer on the network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that is using the printer wirelessly over the same network.

Do not connect the USB cable
until the installer prompts you to connect it. Users that connect via WPS do not need to connect the USB cable at any time. |
Important
: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue

Method one: Install the software with the printer CD
Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:
On the Windows taskbar, click Start

Click My Computer
, and then double-click the CD drive.

screen opens, click Continue

Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
When prompted to choose a connection type, select Network

If you already connected the printer to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
, the installer detects the printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.
If you did not connect the printer to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
, the installer searches for, but does not find the printer because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next
again, and then follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
Method two: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.
Step one: Download the software
Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
Turn the product on.

Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
Click the Plus sign ( 
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download.
Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions
( 
) for complete download instructions.
Click Download
. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
Click Save
, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
Click Save
. The software downloads to your computer.
Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder
, and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe
.

screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe
file, and then double-click it. |
You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next
, and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.

Use one of the following methods to connect the printer to a wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). This step requires a WPS-enabled wireless router. If you do not have a WPS-enabled wireless router, continue to the step to decide whether to install with the printer CD or download the software.

The HP Printer Install Wizard quickly and easily finds the best Windows 7 print driver for your printer. To save time, try using this automated tool.

The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers, and is available only for the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems. The steps in this method include instructions to "click or tap" on-screen elements to perform a task. This instruction accommodates the Windows 8 touchscreen functionality. You must continue to use mouse clicks to perform the task. |

The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers. This wizard is available only for Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating systems.The HP Printer Install Wizard works with printers connected with a USB cable or with a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network connection. If you would like to connect your printer wirelessly, but it is not yet on a wireless network, you need to temporarily connect the printer with a USB cable to run the wizard. |
Step two: Download the wizard
Click or tap the following link to download the wizard:
Make sure that your computer meets the system requirements, and then click Download
.
Check to see if the Security Warning
dialog box opens, and then click the Plus sign ( 
) next to the corresponding option:

When the Security Warning
dialog box opens, choose one of the following methods to download the wizard.
If the Security Warning dialog box does not open
Click Run
in the Notification bar to download the software.
Click Yes
in the User Account Control
window.
When the wizard finishes installing, the wizard opens automatically.

Step three: Run the HP Printer Install Wizard
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
Connect the USB cable to the HP printer and to the computer, if it is not already connected to the computer or the network.
Make sure that your computer has an Internet connection. The wizard must access the Internet to work correctly.
Click Next
to begin the utility. The wizard displays a list of detected products.
If the wizard detects more than one printer, select your HP printer from the list.
The wizard automatically displays the best available driver for your HP printer.
If a full feature driver is available
, the wizard detects it. Click Next
to download and install the software. For full functionality, HP recommends installing the full feature driver if it is available.
If an in-Operating System (in-OS) driver is available
, the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It also supplies a link to more information about using the in-OS driver with your printer.
If a Windows Update driver is available
, the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It will also supply a link to more information about using a Windows Update driver.
What is a Windows Update driver?
When you connect the USB cable to the printer, and then to the computer, or Windows 8 detects that the printer is on the same network as the PC, Windows activates Windows Update. Windows Update searches online for the most recent printer driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver. The Windows Update process takes place automatically.
If an alternate driver is available
, the wizard supplies a link to learn how to install and configure the alternate driver for your printer.

What is an alternate driver?
For some products that do not have a driver available, there might be another compatible driver that you can use instead.

Access the WPS settings for the wireless router, and then input the PIN into the correct field. These steps vary by manufacturer.
The printer automatically finds the wireless network and configures the connection.
Step three: Install the software
Choose one of the following methods to install your HP software.

The HP Printer Install Wizard is not available for all printers. This wizard is available only for Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating systems.The HP Printer Install Wizard works with printers connected with a USB cable or with a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network connection. If you would like to connect your printer wirelessly, but it is not yet on a wireless network, you need to temporarily connect the printer with a USB cable to run the wizard. |
Step two: Download the wizard
Click or tap the following link to download the wizard:
Make sure that your computer meets the system requirements, and then click Download
.
Check to see if the Security Warning
dialog box opens, and then click the Plus sign ( 
) next to the corresponding option:
If the Security Warning dialog box opens
When the Security Warning
dialog box opens, choose one of the following methods to download the wizard.
If the Security Warning dialog box does not open
Click Run
in the Notification bar to download the software.
Click Yes
in the User Account Control
window.
When the wizard finishes installing, the wizard opens automatically.

Step three: Run the HP Printer Install Wizard
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
Connect the USB cable to the HP printer and to the computer, if it is not already connected to the computer or the network.
Make sure that your computer has an Internet connection. The wizard must access the Internet to work correctly.
Click Next
to begin the utility. The wizard displays a list of detected products.
If the wizard detects more than one printer, select your HP printer from the list.
The wizard automatically displays the best available driver for your HP printer.
If a full feature driver is available
, the wizard detects it. Click Next
to download and install the software. For full functionality, HP recommends installing the full feature driver if it is available.
If an in-Operating System (in-OS) driver is available
, the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It also supplies a link to more information about using the in-OS driver with your printer.
If a Windows Update driver is available
, the wizard explains that the driver is already installed. It will also supply a link to more information about using a Windows Update driver.
What is a Windows Update driver?
When you connect the USB cable to the printer, and then to the computer, or Windows 8 detects that the printer is on the same network as the PC, Windows activates Windows Update. Windows Update searches online for the most recent printer driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver. The Windows Update process takes place automatically.
If an alternate driver is available
, the wizard supplies a link to learn how to install and configure the alternate driver for your printer.

What is an alternate driver?
For some products that do not have a driver available, there might be another compatible driver that you can use instead.
Method two: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to connect to the network, and then download and install the software from the HP website.
Step one: Download the software
Follow these steps to download the software.
Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
Turn the printer on.

Check the instructions on the page, and then click or tap the Plus sign ( 
) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
Click the Plus sign ( 
) next to Driver
, and then click or tap the Full Feature Software and Driver
option.

Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click or tap View directions

Click or tap Download
.
Click or tap Save
in the Notification bar to download the software.

The software file automatically saves to the Downloads
folder on your computer. If you want to install it at a later time, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer
, and then click or tap Downloads
to access the file. |
Step two: Install the software
Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that will use the printer wirelessly over the same network.

NOTE:

Do not connect the USB cable
until the installer prompts you to connect it. Users that connect via WPS will not need to connect the USB cable at any time. |
Important
: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue
, unblock
, yes
, allow
, or permit
. Otherwise, the software installation fails.
When the download completes, click or tap Run
in the Notification bar.

If you closed the Notification bar after the download completed, right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, click or tap File Explorer

. Find the name of the HP software file, and then double-click or double-tap the file. |
Click or tap Yes
in the User Account Control
window, and then wait while the installer extracts the files.
When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Method three: Install the software using the printer CD
Follow these steps to install the software using the printer CD.
Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:
Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap File Explorer
.
Click or tap Computer
, and then click or tap the CD or DVD drive. Double-click or double-tap on the Setup.exe
file.

Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
When prompted to choose a connection type, select Network

If you already connected the printer to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
, the installer detects the printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.
If you did not connect the printer to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
, the installer searches for, but does not find the printer because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click or tap Next
again, and then follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

You can print a Network Configuration page from the HP printer control panel. The page includes the printer IP address, and MAC address as well as the printer network status. Follow these steps to print the information:
