HP Color LaserJet 2820, 2830 and 2840 All-in-Ones - Install print and scan drivers on a Windows 7 computer (32-bit only) using the Windows Vista full solution in compatibility mode

Introduction
Windows 7 users can use this document to obtain a driver when basic drivers were not built into the Windows operating system (OS) or to upgrade from a basic print driver to enable more advanced features. This document applies to HP Color LaserJet 2820, 2830, and 2840 All-in-Ones only.
While these products do not have a full solution Windows 7 driver, you can run the HP product software created for the Windows Vista 32-bit operating system on a Windows 7 PC in compatibility mode to enable full product software functionality.
NOTE: HP Color LaserJet 2820, 2830, and 2840 All-in-Ones are supported in the Windows 7 32-bit operating system only and are not supported in the 64-bit Windows 7 environment. If you are using the Windows 7 64-bit OS, use the driver included in the operating system to enable print/scan software functionality (print only when installed through a network) and then use the Scan and Fax feature in Windows or the product control panel to fax. Do NOT install a Universal Print Driver (UPD) because this option is print only and is not recommended for multifunction products (MFPs).
Before you begin
The HP Color LaserJet 2820, 2830, and 2840 All-in-Ones have a driver built into the Windows 7 operating system (OS).
NOTE: When you connect the product to the computer, Windows 7 detects the hardware and automatically installs the correct driver. A notification lets you know when installation begins and when it is complete. You do not have to download any software or insert the product CD to enable this basic driver.
This is a basic driver that does not include the same features provided on the product CD or in the full solution. To obtain more advanced software functionality, customers need to upgrade from the basic print driver to a full solution. To do this for HP Color LaserJet 2820, 2830, and 2840 All-in-Ones, obtain the full feature software for Vista (from either the product CD or online download) and then follow the steps in this document to run the HP software on the Windows 7 PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode (32-bit only).
Step one: Locate the Windows Vista software
Product CD
If you have the product CD for Windows Vista 32-bit only, use the software provided on the product CD. Follow these steps:
  1. Copy the entire product CD for Windows Vista 32-bit to the hard drive of the Windows 7 PC.
  2. Browse to the location where the files were saved and then continue to Run the .exe files on a Windows 7 PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode .
Download from www.hp.com
If you do not have the product CD, download the software from www.hp.com/go/support . To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Go to www.hp.com/go/support , click Drivers & Software, type your product in the search box, click Search , and then select your product from the results.
  2. Select your language from the drop-down list and then select the Windows Vista operating system (32-bit only).
  3. Under the Software section, locate the Color LaserJet ... Full software Solution and then click Download .
  4. Click Save , browse to the location where you want to save the .exe file, and then click Save .
NOTE: Before you can run the software on Windows 7 in Windows Vista compatibility mode, you will need to modify the file properties. See Run the .exe files on a Windows 7 PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode .
  5. Browse to the location where you saved the .exe file and then double-click the file to launch the WinZip Self Extractor.
  6. Browse to the location where you want to save the extracted files, deselect the When done unzipping open: autorun.exe check box and then click Unzip .

Step two: Run the .exe files on a Windows 7 PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode
NOTE: After copying the product CD or downloading the Vista full solution on a Windows 7 PC, the following software components are extracted:
  • HP LaserJet Toolbox
  • Scan Application
  • Send Fax
  • Solution Center
  • Print Driver
  • Uninstall Utility
  • User Guide
  • Twain and WIA Scan Drivers
There are 5 executable (.exe) files extracted to the Windows 7 PC hard drive that need to be run in compatibility mode for a successful installation on a Windows 7 PC. Each of these 5 files (autorun, hpzsetup, hpzice, HPZstub, and Setup) need to be modified before they can be run in compatibility mode on the Windows 7 PC. To modify and run the .exe files on a Windows 7 PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode, follow these steps:
  1. Browse to the location where you copied the product CD or downloaded the Vista bundle and then locate the following 5 executable (.exe) files:
    • Setup (.exe)
    • Hpzstub (.exe)
    • hpzsetup (.exe)
    • hpzice (.exe)
    • autorun (.exe)
NOTE: These 5 files may not show the file type extensions (.exe) when listed in the Full Software Solution folder.
