HP LaserJet Pro P1566 and P1606dn Printers - Setting Up the LaserJet (Hardware)

Introduction
This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer. If you already set up the product hardware, and need software installation help, see Links to Software Installation Instructions at the end of this document.
This document includes the following steps to set up the product:
  • Check the contents of the box
  • Remove packing tape
  • Prepare the print cartridge
  • Prepare the trays
  • Load plain paper
  • Connect the power cord
  • Turn on power
Setting up the printer
Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the product software.
CAUTION: Do NOT connect a USB cable now. If you plan to use a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
Step one: Check the contents of the box
Remove the product from the box, and then check the contents of the box.
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
Step two: Remove packing tape
Remove all packing tape from the product.
Step three: Prepare the print cartridge
  1. Open the print cartridge door.

  2. Lift up the paper packing, but do not remove it.

  3. Remove the print cartridge packaging.

  4. Remove the print cartridge from the product.

    CAUTION: To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end.
  5. Remove the packaging from inside the product.

  6. Remove the orange clip from the end of the print cartridge.

  7. Gently rock the print cartridge back and forth to distribute the toner evenly.

  8. Bend the tab on the left side of the print cartridge until the tab breaks loose. Pull the tab to remove all the sealing tape from the print cartridge.

    CAUTION: If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into the fabric .
  9. Insert the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

Step four: Prepare the trays
  1. Insert the output tray.

  2. Insert the priority input tray.

Step five: Load plain paper
  1. Raise the priority input tray, and then slide the paper length and width guides to their outermost positions.

  2. Load plain paper in the main input tray with the top forward and the print side up.

  3. Slide the paper guides inward so that they rest against the stack of paper.
    NOTE: To prevent jams and skewing, always adjust the side and front paper guides.

  4. Lower the priority tray.

Step six: Connect the power cord
  1. Connect the power cord to the back of the product.

  2. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.
Step seven: Turn on power
Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

NOTE: A blank page might print when you turn on the product for the first time.

After you complete the previous setup steps, you can install the product software. For instructions, click the link for your computer operating system and type of connection.
CAUTION: Do NOT connect a USB cable now. You will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
