HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit - Setting up the HP Printer with the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit in Windows 7
Introduction
The HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit replaces the USB cable to allow you the freedom of wireless communication between the HP product and the computer. You can also share the HP product with other computers over an existing wireless network.

Section one
: Follow the steps in this section first
to set up a wireless connection between your HP product and one computer.
Section two (optional)
: After you complete the steps in the first section, see this if you want to add your HP product to an existing wireless network. Adding the HP product to the network allows you to share the HP product with other computers on the network.
Section one: Setting Up the HP Product with the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit
Follow these steps first to set up the kit and the HP product on one computer. After you complete the steps in this section, you can optionally continue to Section two to add the HP product to an existing wireless network.
Step one: Unpack the kit and check the box contents
Unpack the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit. Make sure that the kit includes the following items.

Contents of the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit Step two: Connect the printer adapter
Turn off the HP product.
Connect the USB cable to the printer adapter and the USB port on the back of the HP product.

NOTE:

Even if the HP product has a USB port on the front, use only the port on the back. |
Plug the power cord into the printer adapter and the
power outlet. Make sure that the first two lights turn on.

Step three: Enable Windows Update
Make sure that the computer connects to the Internet correctly.
On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( 
). In the Search programs and files
text box, type Change device installation settings
, and then press Enter
.
In the Device Installation Settings window, click to select Yes, do this automatically
, and then click Save Changes
.
Step four: Install the upgrade kit software
A Windows Vista driver for your product is available to use as a workaround in Windows 7. A Windows 7 driver will not be released. Follow these steps to install the kit.

NOTE:
|
Do not connect the computer adapter until prompted to do so. |
Close all software programs except for the firewall program.
Also, close any HP software
such as HP Solution Center or HP Director.

Respond to any firewall questions concerning the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit software by clicking Always allow
or Yes
. |
Instead of using the CD to install the software, follow these steps to install the most recent software from the HP Web site:
Open a new window to browse to the Download options and information
page:
Read through the Description, and the Details and specifications. You can also click View directions
( 
) for complete download instructions. Click Download
, and then click Run
to start the software installation.
When the installation reaches 90% on the top bar and 10% at the bottom bar, it hangs and does not progress. Follow these steps to continue the installation.

. Click the Applications
tab, right-click Wireless Printing upgrade kit
, and then select Go to process
from the menu that displays.
Highlight SetupWizard.exe
, and then click End process
. If a window opens and asks you whether you want to end the process, click End process
.

, and then allow Windows 7 to complete the installation.

.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

NOTE:
|
Some of the dialog boxes might open
behind the installer window. If the software installation seems to stop for too
long, check for windows or dialog boxes hidden behind other windows. |
When prompted, insert the computer adapter into a USB port on the computer.

If it is difficult to insert
the computer adapter into the USB port, buy an extension
cable or swivel extender for the

Click Finish
to complete the software installation.

NOTE:

Leave this box checked: For best results, allow all users full printer access
. If this box is cleared,
only an administrator can restart the HP product if it pauses due to being out of paper or other causes. |
At the end of the installation, a new window opens and prompts you to install the product software before you can use the product. Continue with the next step to install the product software.
Step five: Set up the HP product connection
Select one of the following connection methods, depending on whether you already installed your HP product software and drivers.
Method one: You already installed the printer software and drivers
Right-click the Connection Manager icon ( 
) in the notification area (lower-right corner of your screen). Click Connect
.
A progress box displays as the computer creates the new wireless instance of your HP product. The text (Copy 1)
displays after the name of the new instance of the HP product.

NOTE:
|
You can delete the old instance of the HP product if you do not plan to use it. You can also rename the HP product if you want to. Follow the instructions for your operating system. |
Important:
If the installer asks you to insert your HP product or All-in-One CD, you can click Cancel
. You might
have to click Cancel
several times.
After a few moments, the Connection Manager icon changes to show a successful connection ( 
). Method two: You need to install the printer software and drivers
Follow these steps to download and install the most current software available from the HP Web site. Because the version of the software included on the CD might not be the latest version, HP recommends downloading the software.

NOTE:

Leave your HP product attached to the Wireless Printer Adapter. Do not connect the USB cable. |
Open a new window to browse to the Get Software and Drivers
page:
If prompted, type your product number, and then click Next
. You might also need to click your model in a list of similar products.
Select your operating system, and then click Next
.
Click the Plus sign ( 
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions
(
) for complete download instructions. Click Download
. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
Click Save
, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
Click Save
. The software downloads to your computer.
Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
When the software asks you to plug in the USB cable, follow these steps:
Right-click the Connection Manager icon (
) in the notification area (lower-right corner of your screen). Select Connect
.
After a few moments, the icon changes to show a successful connection (
).
Step five: Test the setup
After you complete all of the previous steps, try printing a document to make sure that the set up works correctly.
Open a document.
Click File
, and then click Print
. The Print window opens.
In the Name
drop-down list, click your wireless product from the list of products.

| Your list of products now contains two or more products. For example, the list might contain HP PSC 1400 series
and HP PSC 1400 series (Wireless)
. To print, select the product with (Wireless)
following the name. |
Click OK
or Print
to print the document.
Section two: Adding the printer to an existing wireless network (optional)
This section is optional and provides instructions to share your HP product with other computers over an existing wireless network. Make sure that you complete the steps in Section one first.

You only need the one computer adapter provided in the kit. Leave it connected to the original computer on which you installed the software. |

Follow these
steps on the computer on which you have installed the Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit software with the computer adapter.

NOTE:
|
To complete this task, obtain the service set identifier (SSID) and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) key or passphrase for the network. (The WEP key secures 802.11 wireless networks.)The SSID name, which is the name that is assigned to a wireless network, cannot have any spaces. If the existing network SSID name contains spaces, rename it in order to connect to the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit successfully.The product documentation can help you find this information. |
Click Start
or the Windows icon (
), click All Programs
, and then select HP Wireless Printing Upgrade
. Click Advanced Setup
. The Allow multiple users to share the printer
dialog box opens.
Select Yes
. A list of available Wireless Access Points opens.
Select the desired access point, and then click Next
. Click Refresh
if your access point is not on
the list.
When the Security Setting screen opens, type the SSID
in the box.

NOTE:
|
All your wireless devices must use the same SSID. |
Select the appropriate Security
setting.
| CAUTION:
|
HP strongly recommends using security on your network. Without security, others can gain access to the network and computers, which can cause effects ranging from system slowdowns to destroyed files. |
The available security settings include the following:
| WEP (64-Bit) |
Encrypts data using the WEP 64-bit standard. |
| WEP (128-Bit) |
Encrypts data using the WEP 128-bit standard. |
| WPA-PSK |
Encrypts data using the Wi-Fi Protected Access with Preshared Key standard.
Introduced in 2003, WPA is a wireless security that offers more protection than WEP. WPA-PSK offers
two encryption methods, TKIP and AES, with dynamic encryption keys. |
| WPA2-PSK |
WPA2 is a stronger version of WPA. |
| Disabled |
No data encryption. This is not recommended. |
Create a passphrase or network key that is appropriate for the security type.

Select the Encryption method (TKIP or AES), and then type a key value in the Network Key
and Confirm Network Key
fields. Click Next

The IP Address Setting
screen opens.
Check whether the IP address generated automatically:
Right-click the Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit
icon in the notification area (lower-right corner of the computer screen).
Click Properties
.
If an IP address displays in the Properties
area, the IP address generated automatically because your LAN has a DHCP server. Select Obtain IP Address automatically
on the IP Address Setting
screen, and then skip to step 10.
If the IP address does not display in the Properties
, continue to the next step.
Follow these steps to set the IP address:
Click the Windows icon (
), type cmd
in the Search programs and files
dialog box, and then press ENTER
. When the Command Prompt window opens, type ipconfig
, and then press ENTER
.
The IP configuration information displays on the screen.
Make a note of the Subnet Mask
and the Default Gateway
values.
Click Use the following IP
address
.
Type an unused IP address from the IP address pool used in the LAN.

NOTE:
|
If necessary, check with the network administrator for help finding an unused IP address from the IP address pool. |
Use the same Subnet Mask
and Default Gateway
values that you noted in step c.
After reviewing the settings, click Apply
, and then click Finish
.
Step two: Configure other computers to use the printer
To allow other computers on the wireless network to use the upgraded HP product, install the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit on each computer.

NOTE:
|
You do not have to change the computer adapter in any way to complete this procedure. Leave it attached to the first computer. |
Insert the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit CD into the other computer, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
|
NOTE:
|
If the software version number on the CD is not the most current version, download the software from the HP Web site, and then start the installation. |
A dialog box displays with a prompt to select the computer on the network. Select the computer, and
then click Continue
.
Follow the same procedure for each computer on the network.
|
