Original Document Release.

A limited number of ProLiant DL380 G6-based servers and StorageWorks systems configured with assembly number 451277-001 system boards with a revision number earlier than 0 S (zero S) may reboot unexpectedly. During the reboot, the following message will be recorded in the Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO 2) Event Log:

Server Reset, Server Power Removed, Server Power Restored

IMPORTANT: ProLiant DL380 G6-based servers and StorageWorks systems configured with assembly number 451277-002 system boards are NOT affected by this issue. The assembly number (AS#) is located on the system board bar code label, as shown in Figure 4 below.

When this occurs, no hardware errors will be logged, no events will be captured in the Integrated Management Log (IML), and the system will not execute an Automatic Server Recovery (ASR); however, the operating system log will indicate that an unexpected reboot occurred.

Note: The processor utilization may affect whether the unexpected reboot will occur. This issue typically occurs when the server is idle and in low power mode, although it can occur during normal operation.

Note: As an additional resource when diagnosing sudden reboots on a ProLiant DL380 G6 server, please refer to the following advisory (document number c01802766):

(Revision) Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO 2) And iLO 2 Management Controller Driver - FIRMWARE/ DRIVER UPGRADE REQUIRED: ProLiant Server May Unexpectedly Reboot And Display Event ID 57 Error Messages

SCOPE

A limited number of the following ProLiant DL380 G6-based servers and StorageWorks systems configured with assembly number 451277-001 system boards with a revision number earlier than 0 S (zero S), that were shipped prior to 16 November 2009, and that have a serial number earlier than xxx 947 xxxx:

  • ProLiant DL380 G6 Server
  • ProLiant DL380 G6 Carrier Grade Server
  • StorageWorks X1800 Network Storage System
  • StorageWorks X3800 Network Storage System
  • StorageWorks X9300 Network Storage System
IMPORTANT: ProLiant DL380 G6-based servers and StorageWorks systems configured with assembly number 451277-002 system boards are NOT affected by this issue. The assembly number (AS#) is located on the system board bar code label, as shown in Figure 4 below.

The year and week codes are contained in character positions four through six, as shown in Table 1 below:

The location of the system board revision number is shown in Figures 1 through 4 below:

To determine the system board label revision, open the server cover and use a light to view the system board label. It is not necessary to remove the PCIe riser cage to view the system board revision number.

Interpreting the System Board Revision Numbers

  • The system board revision numbers may be comprised of one or more characters.
  • Revision 0S (zero S) indicates PCA revision S. The zero has no significance and is used only for padding.
  • Revision J/L-N indicates that changes occurred in revisions J, L, and M, bringing the PCA to revision N.
  • When comparing a system board revision number to revision 0S, compare the right-most characters. For example, 0S is later (higher) than J/L-N because S is higher than N .
RESOLUTION

For ProLiant DL380 G6-based servers and StorageWorks systems configured with assembly number 451277-001 system boards with a revision number earlier than 0 S (zero S), that were shipped prior to 16 November 2009, that have a serial number earlier than xxx 947 xxxx, and that are encountering unexpected server reboots, update the System Programmable Logic Device (CPLD/SPLD) on the server using either the Online or Offline Flash Component:

IMPORTANT: After the Online or Offline Flash Component - System Programmable Logic Device has completed running, remove AC power from the server (detach the power cord) for at least 30 seconds, and then restore AC power.

Note: If a failure similar to the following is indicated while running the Online or Offline Flash Component - System Programmable Logic Device, rerun the Flash Component:
DO NOT remove the power cord before rerunning the Online or Offline Flash Component.

If the failure continues to occur when running the Online or Offline Flash Component, the system board has been affected and must be replaced, using Spares Kit 496069-001.
