HP Color LaserJet and LaserJet Printers - USB and Network Installations via the Add Printer Wizard/Windows Update in Windows 7
 Introduction
The objective of this document is to provide a step-by-step procedure of installing HP LaserJet drivers that are available within the Add Printer Wizard and how the Windows Update function interacts in this process. This document will also provide the steps to perform both a USB installation as well as a Direct IP network installation.
Direct IP Network Installation
Click Start
.
Click Devices and Printers
.
Click Add a printer
.
Click Add a local printer
.
Click Next
.
Click Create a new port
and select Standard TCP/IP Port
from the dropdown list.
Click Next
.
|
NOTE:
|
If an IP address already exists for the LaserJet printer to be installed, use the appropriate IP address from the dropdown list within the Use an existing port
option and disregard step 8. |
Per the TCP/IP information on the printer’s configuration page, type in the appropriate information into the Hostname or IP address
field.
Deselect the checkmark in the Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use
field. |
NOTE:
|
When this option is enabled, Microsoft will attempt to match and install an alternate driver that best matches the product if the product-specific driver is not available. The results will vary depending on the product and may or may not contain the necessary functionality and features that the original product-specific driver contains. For newer products, it may be appropriate to check on
www.hp.com
for a Windows 7 certified driver to install using the Have Disk
function of the Add Printer Wizard. |
Click Next
.
Within the Install the printer driver
window, perform the following steps:
Select HP
from the list of manufacturers.
Search for the appropriate Color LaserJet or LaserJet driver from the list of HP printers.
If the appropriate driver is not found within the list of HP printers, click on the Windows Update
button.
|
NOTE:
|
Performing this process will download and display additional LaserJet driver options available from Microsoft. This process requires an internet connection in order to connect to the Microsoft Windows Update servers. Drivers available via Windows Update are obtained on a per incident basis, therefore the Windows Update process may need to be performed each time a user wishes to install a driver that is only available via Windows Update. This procedure may take a few minutes depending on the speed of the user’s network connection and status of the Microsoft servers hosting the drivers. The following screenshot is what the user will see during the Windows Update process:
|
Once the updated list of drivers is retrieved from Microsoft, the HP Printers list will contain several additional drivers to choose from. Perform the following steps:
Select HP
from the list of Manufacturers.
Search for the appropriate Color LaserJet or LaserJet driver from the list of HP printers and click on the appropriate driver.
Click Next
.
If the appropriate printer is displayed in the Printer name
field, click Next
.
The print driver will now be installed. This process may take a few minutes.
Select the appropriate Printer Sharing
options.
Click on the Print a test page
button to confirm communication with the printer.
Click Finish
.
Direct Connect USB Installation
The following outlines a plug and play USB installation from the list of available HP printers within the Add Printer Wizard and Windows Update. Click Start
.
Click Devices and Printers
.
Verify that the printer is turned on and in a Ready
state.
Connect the USB cable to the printer and to the PC.
Windows will attempt to locate and install the appropriate printer driver and DOT4 I/O communication stack via plug and play from the list of available printers available within the operating system.
Depending on the printer model, the installation may need to access the Windows Update server to locate the appropriate driver; therefore an active internet connection may be necessary for this process to complete. For newer products, it may be appropriate to check on
www.hp.com
for a Windows 7 certified driver to install using the Have Disk
function of the Add Printer Wizard.
Once the installation has completed, click on the Print a test page
button to confirm communication with the printer.
Click Finish
. |
NOTE:
|
If proper communication cannot be established between the printer and PC, verify the following steps: |
Windows 7 Device Manager
- Ensure that both IEEE 1284.4 entries are present and not displaying any errors as displayed below:
Printer Port Properties
- Ensure that the correct DOT4_00X port is selected.
Try a different USB cable and ensure that it is directly connected to the PC.
