Question: What documentation is available to assist with migrating from HP Web Jetadmin 8.x/7.8 to HP Web Jetadmin 10.x?
Answer:
Two documents are available to assist with migration. It is highly recommended to review both of these documents before starting the migration process.
Question: What data and settings will be migrated to the new HP Web Jetadmin 10.x host from the HP Web Jetadmin 8.x/7.8 host?
Answer:
Most data and settings can be migrated and retained. The following HP Web Jetadmin data and settings will migrate to the new HP Web Jetadmin 10.x installation:
- Settings Migrated
- Groups
- Custom configuration labels
- General Network settings
- Alerts subscription settings
- Alerts application settings
- Alerts custom email templates
- Discovery settings
- Discovered devices
- Cache Export settings
- Saved Views
- Saved Filters
- Stored device credentials
- HP Report Generation Plug-in settings
- HP Report Generation Plug-in historical data
Question: What data and settings will not be migrated to the new HP Web Jetadmin 10.x host from the HP Web Jetadmin 8.x/7.8 host?
Answer:
Because the HP Web Jetadmin 10.x architecture is different from older revisions and does not support all features in the same way, some data and settings will not be migrated and retained. The following data and settings will not be migrated:
- Bootp functionality
- Profiles
- Access/Deny settings
- SSL settings
- Support URL settings
- Product Update settings
- PSA Plug-in settings
- Driver Pre-configuration Plug-in settings
- Device Storage Manager Plug-in settings/data
- Authentication Plug-in settings
Question: What is Migration Tool?
Answer:
Migration Tool (hpwja_MigrationSettingsCollector.exe) is an executable that is run on the system hosting the older version of HP Web Jetadmin and creates a migration bundle file (SettingsBundle.cab) that is used at the new HP Web Jetadmin 10.x installation. Migration Tool can be downloaded from the HP Web Jetadmin Download Drivers and Software page at
http://www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin_software
. This tool is used when migrating from one host to another host.
Question: Can I migrate to HP Web Jetadmin 10.x using the same host that the old version of HP Web Jetadmin is installed on?
Answer:
Yes. In the case where HP Web Jetadmin 10.x is being updated on the same host where an earlier release of HP Web Jetadmin exists, it is also possible to migrate settings and data. This option is performed in the background and without the need for Migration Tool. Just running the new executable for HP Web Jetadmin 10.x (and selecting Upgrade) will find the older version and migrate the settings accordingly.
Question: What are the older versions of HP Web Jetadmin that are supported when migrating to HP Web Jetadmin 10.x?
Answer:
Supported versions are HP Web Jetadmin 7.8, 8.0, and 8.1. If you are running an older version than what is listed here and still want to migrate to HP Web Jetadmin 10.x, you will need to upgrade to HP Web Jetadmin 8.1 first, and then perform the migration.
Question: If I have already downloaded Migration Tool from an older release of HP Web Jetadmin 10.x, will I be able to use it with newer releases of HP Web Jetadmin?
Answer:
No. Migration Tool now re-releases each time HP Web Jetadmin re-releases. The migration functionality within HP Web Jetadmin performs version checking on SettingsBundle.cab files that are generated by Migration Tool when it is run on HP Web Jetadmin 8.x/7.8 hosts. The version of Migration Tool and HP Web Jetadmin must match in order for the migration functionality to work properly. When planning a migration from an older version, be sure to obtain the latest Migration Tool when you download the new version of HP Web Jetadmin.
Question: Once Migration Tool completes its process, what do I do with the SettingsBundle.cab file?
Answer:
When the migration completes, the location of the migration file (SettingsBundle.cab) on the HP Web Jetadmin 8.x/7.8 host is displayed. This should be the same location as where Migration Tool (hpwja_MigrationSettingsCollector.exe) was launched. On the new host, place the SettingsBundle.cab file in the same directory where you have placed the HP Web Jetadmin 10.x installer (WJASetup.exe). This file will be copied to the local directory DRIVE:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hewlett-Packard\HPWebJetadmin\config (where DRIVE indicates the location of the user documents and settings directories). The file will not be removed as part of the install-migration process; however, this file can be removed (from either location) once the install-migration process completes.
Question: What causes a timeout failure message to be displayed when running Migration Tool?
Answer:
Migration Tool will display a timeout failure if HP Report Generation Plug-in is currently performing a data collection on devices. If this occurs, run Migration Tool only when there is no data collection activity. Viewing the Asset Utilization/Data Collection Schedules page within HP Report Generation Plug-in can be used to determine if any data collections are currently running and also to determine existing data collection schedules.
Question: After completing the install-migration process (launching WJASetup.exe with the SettingsBundle.cab file) and then launching the HP Web Jetadmin Client, is it expected behavior for the application to take a long time to display?
Answer:
Yes. If a large amount of historical data was gathered (by HP Report Generation Plug-in) or if data was being collected on several thousand devices on the HP Web Jetadmin 8.x/7.8 host, then it can take quite a while. It is actually during the Client launch process where the data is actually migrated into the new HP Web Jetadmin 10.x database. Converting the old data into the new database schema is what can be very time-consuming.
Question: After launching WJASetup.exe to continue the install-migration process, what happens if the Migrate Alerts Subscriptions checkbox is selected?
Answer:
Selecting the Migrate Alerts Subscriptions checkbox will cause the install-migration process to establish Alerts subscriptions in HP Web Jetadmin 10.x based on Alerts subscriptions that were established on the older HP Web Jetadmin installation. It will also cause HP Web Jetadmin 10.x to modify SNMP Trap Destination Tables on devices that have these Alerts subscriptions established. The SNMP Trap Destination Table entry (the IP Address for the older HP Web Jetadmin host) will be removed. The Migrate Alerts Settings checkbox should only be checked if you understand and agree that Alerts on the older HP Web Jetadmin host will be decommissioned as a requirement to migrate alerts subscriptions to the new HP Web Jetadmin 10.x host.
Question: After launching WJASetup.exe to continue the install-migration process, what happens if the Migrate Report Data checkbox is selected?
Answer:
The Migrate Report Data checkbox will cause the install-migration process to import all historic data from the HP Report Generation Plug-in source that was in use on the older HP Web Jetadmin installation. In the case where Microsoft Access was in use on the older installation, an MDB file will be extracted from the migration bundle file and then imported into the database for HP Web Jetadmin 10.x. In the case where the source was Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), the install-migration process will use HP Report Generation Plug-in database connection settings that were gathered by Migration Tool. These connection settings will be used by HP Web Jetadmin 10.x for the purpose of connecting to the database and gathering all the historic reports data. This data is then imported into the database for HP Web Jetadmin 10.x. Connection to the remote database will require that the user running the HP Web Jetadmin 10.x installation is logged onto the network/domain in such a way that facilitates authentication between HP Web Jetadmin 10.x and the system hosting the database.
