HP Security Notice HPSN-2009-001 rev.2 - HP LaserJet Printers, HP Edgeline Printers, HP Photosmart Printers, and HP Digital Senders - Unverified Input
NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.

Release Date: 2009-03-17

Last Updated: 2010-05-11

DESCRIPTION

HP LaserJet Printers, HP Edgeline Printers, HP Photosmart Printers, and HP Digital Senders can accept unverified input from browsers and other clients.

DETAILS

Discussion:

Browsers and other client applications may send unintended requests to client applications such as the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) on HP printers. These requests may be triggered by browsing to a web site containing malicious code. The requests appear to the client application to have originated with the user. The user may not be aware that the request has been submitted.

HP printers may accept unverified print requests on TCP port 9100.

Recommended Action:

Exposure to unintended requests can be reduced in a number of ways.

  • Set the HP Embedded Web Server security password
  • Set the PJL Password
  • In the External File System Access configuration, disable PJL and PostScript disk access
  • If possible, configure the browser to alert the user when a web site in the external internet zone attempts to access a site in the local intranet zone
  • Do not access other web sites while performing administrator tasks
  • Exit the browser when administrator tasks are complete

Additional Information:

More information on securing access to printers can be found in the "HP Imaging and Printing Security Best Practices" document, available here:
