HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 - Late Breaking news
Late Breaking News for HP Web
Jetadmin 10.2 (Edition 19, 7/2009)
This document is a supplement to the online help and Installation and Setup Guide
documents for HP Web Jetadmin 10.2. This document will be updated occasionally at
www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin_software
.
This document addresses HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 (10.2.59093).
HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 Hot Fix (10.2.59093)
This version of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 is a hot-fix release developed to quickly address emerging issues. This release supersedes previous releases of the software including version 10.2.58560. This is a cumulative release; all improvements, fixes, and device support in previous releases are also included in this release.
This version is installed by using the install executable. |
NOTE:
|
Upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin 10.0 to HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 is not supported. Administrators should use the HP Web Jetadmin 10.1 installer as an interim upgrade if upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin 10.0 is required.

Supplies Groups Removal from HP Web Jetadmin 10.2
Supplies Groups
, a feature previously available in HP Web Jetadmin has been removed from HP Web
Jetadmin 10.2. Supplies Groups
allowed devices to be grouped in an area that had features very similar
to Alerts
and Reports
and, when enabled, these features became automatically applied to Supplies
Group
devices as they were added to the group. Current Alerts
and Reports
functionality in HP Web
Jetadmin 10.2
replaces the functionality of Supplies Groups
.
When upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin software versions 10.0 or 10.1 to HP Web Jetadmin 10.2,
remember the following:
Supplies Groups
, including device membership and settings within those groups, will no longer
be present after the upgrade.
Supplies Groups
, Proactive
and Predictive
settings can be enabled on the same devices either
before or after the upgrade via Alerts
and Reports
features.
Proactive
settings can be enabled by applying Supplies Alerts
subscriptions to the devices that
have/had membership in the Supplies Groups
prior to the upgrade.
Predictive
settings can be enabled by applying Data Collections
and Supplies Reports
settings
to the devices that have/had membership in the Supplies Groups
prior to the upgrade.
Further, Automatic
or Manual
device Groups functionality can be used to capture devices for the purpose
of Supplies Management. See Help for more information regarding Device Groups functionality.
|
NOTE:
|
When upgrading to HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, please document all devices contained in
Supplies Groups
along with device Proactive
and Predictive
settings within those groups before you
begin the upgrade. Supplies Groups
settings will not be retained during the upgrade and Supplies
Groups
will be gone after the upgrade is complete. Once HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 is installed, use the
devices and settings detail documented earlier to replicate important items within the Reports
and/or
Alerts
feature areas as needed. |
Improvements and Fixes in HP Web Jetadmin 10.2
This portion of Late Breaking News lists improvements and fixes made for HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 (10.2.59093). Outgoing Fax Counts now appear correctly in Device Utilization Reports. |
NOTE:
|
Some device specific-issues still exist; for more details, please see the Known Issues section in this document.
|
HP Web Jetadmin Service (HPWJA Service) startup fails. Upgrades over 10.1 with HP Web Jetadmin version 10.2.58560 installer (hpwja_setup-102-58560.exe) may fail in some cases. The HP Web Jetadmin application installs correctly the first time and runs normally until a reboot or when the HPWJA Service is restarted. At this point, all service startups fail. This issue is fixed in the latest HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 release.
The HP Web Jetadmin Data Collection feature no longer allows data collection to take place on a new device that has been placed on the network at an IP address that was registered to a different device (one not present on the network). HP Web Jetadmin now fails the collection for this device. The new device, when added to Data Collection, is added as a different and newer device.
Improvements and fixes made in earlier releases of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2:
HP Web Jetadmin Estimated % supply columns now display Not Empty when a supply level is detected at 100%. HP Web Jetadmin supplies Reporting and supplies Alerting functionality can be adversely affected when a supply level is detected at 100% over a long period of time. Some HP devices can potentially incorrectly convey values that lead HP Web Jetadmin to detect 100%. For this reason, HP Web Jetadmin will display Not Empty instead of 100%. This can be observed in both estimated % supply level columns and supply level gauges found in device Status. For all other Estimated % supply values (0 – 99), HP Web Jetadmin will display an integer. A few HP device models may have Not Empty, Low, or Empty within Estimated % supply columns. Again, this change was implemented to more closely match values returned from these device models.
The Time Zone dropdown list no longer duplicates itself in multiple configuration mode when the user selects an option and then deselects it.
The Fax Number now appears correctly in the column for devices that have one set.
The HP Color LaserJet CM6040 MFP Subsystem 66 Service Error now appears in the General Alerts listing.
Input Trays on third-party devices now show correct capacities.
The HP Color LaserJet CM6040 MFP Cover Open message no longer forces Supplies Alerting.
Duplicate Alerts are no longer propagated as devices are added and removed from device groups with Alerts policies.
When selecting the Embedded Web Server folder under the Config tab on Device lists for the HP LaserJet 9040 and 9050 printers, the 'Error Reading Device Settings message is no longer displayed.
The System Name now appears as an option when using the Import from file option under Configure Devices.
In Reports, duplicate entries no longer are included in the Event Log History report.
The client no longer crashes when working in the Alerts area.
For the HP Color LaserJet CM6030 and CM6040 printers, the System Contact object no longer uses the Contact Person object.
Duplicate Supplies Alerts no longer trigger when deleting or rediscovering a device.
Configuring Device Link Settings no longer causes other device configuration conflicts.
Device Data Collections are no longer treated as Partial when a non-default collection time (other than 12:00 am) is used.
Reports now show Outgoing Fax Counts.
HP Officejets now have supplies correctly displayed in columns.
The interim report count of Total Color Pages now appears correctly for the HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi MFP.
The HP Color LaserJet 9500 MFP now displays accurate values for the Total Color Page Count column in the Device list.
Brother printers now correctly display Model Name.
In Reports, event code entries in the Event Log History report now match entries in the Event Log on the printer's Embedded Web Server page.
Protocol settings are now completed at the end of a configuration process in order to avoid conflicts with other configuration settings.
The Disable reverse DNS lookup field now appears correctly within the Kerberos configuration section.
If configuring the Send to Network folder path with a duplicate folder name in a Configuration template, a Duplicate folder error message is now displayed.
When performing Data Synchronization with other HP Web Jetadmin servers, User Defined values now correctly synchronize from the source host.
The Severity icon for third party devices is now displayed correctly.
For Fax Printing, the PIN can now be configured with a leading zero character.
In the Digital Sending folder, you can now configure email settings on the HP LaserJet M and CM series printers for:
The HP SNMP Proxy now checks to ensure the SNMP Service is installed before it installs.
On the Troubleshoot tab under the Device list, the HP Support link now successfully display the appropriate product page for the device.
Third-party printers not showing a serial number can now be added to the Device Utilization Data Collection process for Reports.
Renaming an Alerts Subscription template no longer causes the template to be removed from its associated Group Policy.
New Functionality in HP Web Jetadmin 10.2
The Alternate log-in
feature allows a user to add a username and password when HP Web Jetadmin is not able to authenticate the user under which the current desktop session is being run.
The Device Mapping
feature allows a graphics file (.gif, .jpg, .png, .tiff, and .bmp) to be imported into HP Web Jetadmin and used for device monitoring.

Re-Released Migration Tool
The Migration Tool
(hpwja_MigrationsSettingsCollector.exe) will now re-release each time HP Web
Jetadmin re-releases. The Migration functionality within HP Web Jetadmin performs version checking
on SettingsBundle.cab files that are generated by the Migration Tool
when it is run on HP Web Jetadmin
7.8/8.x hosts. The version of Migration Tool
and HP Web Jetadmin must match in order for the Migration
functionality to work properly. Be sure to obtain the latest Migration Tool
(hpwja_MigrationsSettingsCollector.exe) when you download HP Web Jetadmin software and are
planning a migration from these older software versions.
HP Web Jetadmin Service Release Updates
HP periodically provides Service Release updates for HP Web Jetadmin software to offer defect fixes and new device support. Service Release updates are fully installable executables that can be used to upgrade over existing installations of HP Web Jetadmin. These Service Release updates can be obtained from
www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin
by clicking on Download Now. Email messages are also sent from
www.hp.com
through a service called Subscribers Choice Alerts
. To subscribe to this service, please visit:

Device Support for HP Web Jetadmin 10.2
HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 now supports this additional device:
Device updates are installed using HP Web Jetadmin install executable, which will re-release periodically to provide new device support and defect fixes. The application installer can be run on any earlier version of HP Web Jetadmin. If the devices for which these updates are targeted are discovered prior to the application update, a refresh is required in order to re-register the device to the appropriate device model. The device update does not force this to occur automatically. Devices can be refreshed individually by locating them in the All Devices
list and using the Refresh (full)
feature. To force this refresh to occur on many devices at once, delete affected devices from the All Devices
list and then run a discovery on them. Specified Address discovery
can be performed to target only affected devices.
For more complete details about device support for HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, visit
www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin
, click the Self Help
tab, and see the related Supported Devices
whitepaper.
HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 Language Availability
This release of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 is English only with limited localization from previous releases. However, localization updates for French, Italian, German, and Spanish versions will be released in late-August/early-September.

Known Issues
The following known issues are items that are being addressed in HP Web Jetadmin software teams.
Look for more information regarding fixes and product enhancements in future releases of HP Web
Jetadmin by checking this document regularly or by using HP Subscriber's Choice Alerts
on
www.hp.com
.
Device Utilization Reports
may continue to show ** for Outgoing Fax Count for certain HP MFP devices. The issue is under investigation and a fix is expected soon.
Currently models known to exhibit this reporting issue are HP LaserJet M4345 MFP, HP LaserJet M3035 MFP, HP LaserJet M9040 MFP, and HP LaserJet M9050 MFP. HP’s CM8060 and CM8050 MFP models currently do not have firmware support for Outgoing Fax Counts. A firmware request is pending.
In Help
, Search
, keyword searches yield incorrect topic headings. A fix is expected in a future release.
The Analog Fax
column in device lists changes to No when a device is not on network. A full refresh is needed to restore this value to Yes. A fix is expected in a future release.
In Alerts
, Subscriptions
, devices are shown as Unknown. The Alerts, Subscriptions area is not correctly handling devices that have been deleted or devices that are in the Hidden device list. A fix is expected in a future release.
Prior to installing HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 over a running HP Web Jetadmin installation, it is recommended to use Application Management
, Overview
, HP Web Jetadmin
– All Active Tasks
task module to detect any paused or pending tasks. These tasks should be stopped or resolved before running the installer.
Older HP printers, such as the HP LaserJet 4 series, may not have enough management object support for HP Web Jetadmin 10.1 or 10.2 to be able to correctly distinguish device status. In some cases, these printers may actually be discovered by the application but will always remain in Device Communication Error
state within HP Web Jetadmin status. At this time, HP does not plan to address the issue.
When configuring Mapping
, if an image is selected that has a transparent background, other parts of the HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 display will show through the map. It is recommended to use images with no transparent backgrounds.
The HP Designjet Z6100ps indicates it supports Secure Disk Erase
, but setting the File System Password object or the Secure File Erase Mode object does not work and the erase attempt fails. It is anticipated this will be fixed in a follow-on Service Release.
For the HP LaserJet 5200L and HP Color LaserJet CP3050 printers, when a General Alert
occurs, duplicate entries are made in the Alerts History log. It is anticipated this will be fixed in a follow-on Service Release.
HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 is not collecting the correct page counts for the HP Color LaserJet CP3525. It is anticipated this will be fixed in a follow-on Service Release.
HP Web Jetadmin restricts the configuration of Company Name
to 32 or less characters depending on the device model. A fix is expected in a future release.
All Devices
list data appear representative of a newly discovered device on an old device. Once the new device is truly discovered, an old device will show new device data. At this time, this is expected behavior. However, usability improvements are planned for a future release.
The Import/Export
address book functionality does not closely match device EWS. A fix is expected in a future release.
An HP Web Jetadmin client will not display localized text correctly when the workstation Windows installation is in one language and the desktop regional settings are in another language. The usual behavior is that some text will display in one language while some text will display in another language. At this time, HP is supporting localized clients when the desktop regional setting and the Windows install language are the same.
HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 performance gains are realized through adding hardware memory, using multiprocessor hosts, using high performance storage systems. Performance is also impacted by background tasks such as discovery or other processor intensive operations. Check for active background processes by using the Active Tasks
Task Module located in the Overview
node on the navigation tree.
The HP LaserJet 1505n does not support password objects that allow HP Web Jetadmin to confirm user knowledge of passwords. Because of this, passwords are not supported on this HP model.
Third party devices that support the standard MIB item Supplies Colorant Table
may have their device supply detail represented in HP Web Jetadmin only if HP Web Jetadmin is able to programmatically determine supply names, types, levels, and so forth.
Some user preferences, window size, column size, and others may not be retained over a reinstall or upgrade of this software.
Installing a signed certificate into Microsoft Windows Vista fails with error.
Devices can count Microsoft Windows test pages as color but these pages are tagged as monochrome by the driver. This can cause a page count discrepancy between Device Utilization Reports and By User Reports
.
Export XML and CSV Header compatibility with 8.x. HP Web Jetadmin 10.0 Device List Exporting feature uses non localized tag values within XML and CSV. In most cases, these values are not be compatible with HP Web Jetadmin 8.1 and earlier releases of the software.
It is recommended to install localized .NET Framework to match the client workstation on which HP Web Jetadmin will be running.
HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 is currently only supported with HP Universal Print Driver 4.5. The HP Universal Print Driver 4.5 Postscript driver is bundled with HP Web Jetadmin 10.2. The PCL versions are installable via .INF install functionality with they are obtained from the HP driver download portal at
www.hp.com
.
Deleting and blocking devices on a three-port HP Jetdirect EX print server results in different serial numbers. Port 1 is blocked and the other two result in Error devices not found, but are successfully removed from the All Device
list. This issue will be fixed in a future release of the software.
When migrating from HP Web Jetadmin 7.8/8.x, the Migration
interface presented at first client run prompts for a password. If the user types the password incorrectly and then corrects it by a re-prompt pop-up, the migration settings for Alerts
and Reports
data are bypassed. To recover, the user must uninstall HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 and then start the installer with the SettingsBundle.cab file anew. This is a known issue and will be addressed in a future release of the software.
When many devices are selected for Report Generation
, the report may not succeed, giving the message: No data for any of the devices in the specified time period within the report. A workaround for this situation is to access the Tools
, Options
, Shared
, General
page. On this page, increase the Database Query Timeout
value from the default value of 30 seconds to a larger value (such as 60 or 120 seconds) until the issue is resolved.
Improvements and Fixes in Previous Releases of HP Web Jetadmin
HP Web Jetadmin Estimated %
supply columns now display Not Empty
when a supply level is detected at 100%. HP Web Jetadmin supplies Reporting and supplies Alerting functionality can be adversely affected when a supply level is detected at 100% over a long period of time. Some HP devices can potentially incorrectly convey values that lead HP Web Jetadmin to detect 100%.
For this reason, HP Web Jetadmin will display Not Empty
instead of 100%
The Time Zone
dropdown list no longer duplicates itself in multiple configuration mode when the user selects an option and then deselects it.
The Fax Number
now appears correctly in the column for devices that have one set.
The HP Color LaserJet CM6040 MFP Subsystem 66 Service Error now appears in the General Alerts
listing.

object no longer uses the Contact Person
object.
Duplicate Supplies Alerts
no longer trigger when deleting or rediscovering a device.
Configuring Device Link Settings
no longer causes other device configuration conflicts.
Device Data Collections
are no longer treated as Partial
when a non-default collection time (other than 12:00 am) is used.
Reports
now show Outgoing Fax Counts
.
HP Officejets now have supplies correctly displayed in columns.
The interim report count of Total Color Pages
now appears correctly for the HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi MFP.
The HP Color LaserJet 9500 MFP now displays accurate values for the Total Color Page Count
column in the Device
list.
Brother printers now correctly display Model Name.
In Reports
, event code entries in the Event Log History
report now match entries in the Event Log
on the printer's Embedded Web Server page.
Protocol settings are now completed at the end of a configuration process in order to avoid conflicts with other configuration settings.
The Disable reverse DNS lookup
field now appears correctly within the Kerberos
configuration section.
If configuring the Send to Network

tab under the Device
list, the HP Support
link now successfully display the appropriate product page for the device.
Third-party printers not showing a serial number can now be added to the Device Utilization Data Collection
process for Reports.
Renaming an Alerts Subscription
template no longer causes the template to be removed from its associated Group Policy.
Sensitive Device Information
In some cases, HP Web Jetadmin sends sensitive information to the device. This information can include user and password detail such as device Digital Send
features or other device security features that require credentials. In this case HP Web Jetadmin is sending the information using the SSL/TLS protocol. This protocol allows HP Web Jetadmin to send encrypted information to the device and prevents clear-text information from being 'sniffed' through a network trace utility. When communicating with the device through the SSL/TLS protocol, HP Web Jetadmin uses certificates stored on the printer's HP Jetdirect network interface. These certificates can be self-signed or they can be signed by a verifiable certificate authority. At this time, HP Web Jetadmin does not check the authenticity of certificates stored on the device; it simply uses the certificate when communicating with the device through the SSL/TLS protocol. This security limitation could be exploited, allowing unauthorized individuals access to sensitive information like user and password detail. Administrators should keep this in mind when managing sensitive device information using HP Web Jetadmin software.
HP Web Jetadmin Get Images Feature Does Not Check Authenticity
HP Web Jetadmin users can retrieve files directly from the Internet by using the Get Images
feature within the HP Web Jetadmin Firmware Repository
. These files can be automatically stored onto the HP Web Jetadmin server.
The HP Web Jetadmin client application runs on the end-user host computer. The client application contacts
www.hp.com
and acquires an index file. This file is used to show all available HP Jetdirect Print Server and HP printer and multifunction printer (MFP) device firmware images. The user selects the desired firmware images and the files are downloaded to the client system. The downloaded files are passed to the HP Web Jetadmin server host. The files are then available within the Firmware Repository
of the HP Web Jetadmin server host. These image files can be installed on HP devices by using the Firmware Upgrade functionality.
HP Web Jetadmin server and client applications do not check the authenticity of either the downloaded files or the systems hosting them. The software simply contacts an hp.com URL using the HTTP protocol and downloads files using the same HTTP protocol.
Administrators should be aware that this could constitute a security weakness within their particular environment.
Recommended Action:
Administrators and users can download HP printer and multifunction printer (MFP) firmware contained in self-extracting, signed files as follows.
For a specific product model, use Internet Explorer to visit the HP Support and Drivers Web pages at
www.hp.com
.
On the Download Drivers and Software
pages, select a file to be downloaded and click Download
.
With the correct security level settings, Internet Explorer will display a dialog box: Do you want to run or save this file?
.
Click Run
.
The file will be downloaded and a new dialog box will be displayed: Do you want to run this software?
.
Verify that the publisher displayed is HP
.
To examine the digital signature information, click HP
.
If the publisher information is correct, click Run
to extract the driver from the self-extracting file.
Upload the extracted firmware image to the HP Web Jetadmin installation by using the Import feature of the Firmware Repository
.
|
NOTE:
|
At this time, HP does not sign firmware image downloads (DLD files) for HP Jetdirect Print Servers. |
