Original Document Release.
IMPORTANT: The HP BladeSystem c7000 Power Supply replacement option in the Resolution section of this advisory is required to prevent a rare issue from occurring involving potential failure of the power supply in the c7000 enclosure. HP strongly recommends performing this required action at the customer's earliest possible convenience. Neglecting to perform the required action could result in the potential for one or more of the failure symptoms listed below to occur. By disregarding this notification, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future power supply failures.

HP has identified a potential, yet extremely rare issue with HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure 2250W Hot-Plug Power Supplies manufactured prior to March 20, 2008. This issue is extremely rare; however, if it does occur, the power supply may fail and this may result in the unplanned shutdown of the enclosure, despite redundancy, and the enclosure may become inoperable.

HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure Power Supplies manufactured on or after March 20th, 2008 are not affected. HP is providing a utility designed to effectively and easily identify potentially affected power supplies in your environment. The power supplies identified by the utility are eligible for proactive replacement as detailed in the Resolution section below.

Because the utility runs while the system is operational, there is no need to schedule server downtime. The power supplies are hot-pluggable and can be replaced while the enclosure is running.

IMPORTANT : In order to ensure successful execution and accurate results, before running the utility, be sure to read the detailed instructions and requirements included in the readme.txt file that is packaged with the PSTool utility. In addition, be sure to review the general process information included in this advisory. Additional information is available in the System Requirements/Utility Limitations section below. Do not run the utility until you have reviewed this section.

Please follow the instructions below to download and operate the utility.

SCOPE

Any HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure configured with an HP c7000 Power Supply, if the power supply was manufactured prior to March 20, 2008. This issue does not affect the power supplies in the c3000 Enclosure, DC-powered enclosures (typically utilized in an Integrity blade environment) or any other power supplies provided by HP.

RESOLUTION

HP is providing a power supply identification utility, PSTool (version 1.30 for Windows and version 1.10 for Linux) to enable customers to identify potentially affected power supplies. Supplies identified by the utility will be replaced. HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure Power Supplies manufactured on or after March 20, 2008, and DC-powered enclosures (typically utilized in an Integrity blade environment) are not affected. To ensure stability of your computing environment, affected power supplies can be identified as follows:

For c-Class enclosures running Onboard Administrator Version 2.60 (or later), OA will automatically generate the following alerts for any power supplies that need to be replaced.

IMPORTANT : Affected power supplies will be displayed with a status of "Critical" and subsequently identifed by a red "x" in the OA GUI as shown below. However, this alert is informational only. The power supply will remain online and operational . The alert will remain until the power supply has been replaced:

The OA GUI LCD will display device errors for the affected power supplies and give a relevant "Fix" message:

The Insight Display will show the following alert:

For c-Class enclosures running Onboard Administrator Version 2.50 and 2.52, OA will automatically generate the following alerts for any power supplies that need to be replaced:

The OA GUI LCD will display device errors for the affected power supplies and give a relevant "Fix" message, which reads: Help: Service Advisory. HP strongly recommends replacing this power supply at the customer's earliest possible convenience pursuant to Customer Advisory c01519680.

The OA CLI will show a Diagnostic Status entry that reads "Service Action - Customer Advisory c01519680" when the SHOW ENCLOSURE POWERSUPPLY <NUM> command is issued.

The OA system log will have an entry for each affected power supply that reads "OA: HP strongly recommends replacing power supply #X at the customer's earliest possible convenience pursuant to Customer Advisory c01519680."

Alertmail: A general alertmail message will be generated stating that the power supply is degraded. A specific alertmail message will not be generated for this customer advisory.

SNMP: A general SNMP trap will be generated stating that the power supply is degraded. A specific SNMP trap will not be generated for this customer advisory.

When this alert occurs, the affected power supplies will be displayed with a status of "Major Degraded" and subsequently identifed by an exclamation point (!) in the OA GUI. However, this alert is informational only. The power supply will remain online and operational . The alert will remain until the power supply has been replaced.

For c-Class enclosures running Onboard Administrator Version 2.41, the OA GUI will automatically generate the following alert for any power supplies that need to be replaced:

A service action is required for the hardware indicated. Please see Customer Advisory c01519680.

When this alert occurs, the affected power supplies will be displayed with a status of "Degraded" and subsequently identifed by an exclamation point (!) in the OA GUI. However, this alert is informational only. The power supply will remain online and operational . The alert will remain until the power supply has been replaced.

IMPORTANT: After upgrading to OA Version 2.41, clear the browser cache. If the cache is not cleared, the power supplies displayed with a status of "degraded" will not return any corresponding information in the "Service Action" section of the Diagnostic Information/Power Supply Information for that bay.

If an alert is generated, run the power supply identification utility as detailed below.

For c-Class enclosures running Onboard Administrator Version 2.32 (or earlier), the OA GUI will not generate an alert or change the status of affected power supplies to "Degraded" or "Critical." Run the PSTool utility as detailed below in order to identify potentially affected power supplies. Supplies identified by the utility will be replaced by HP.

Utility Output

After running PSTool, depending on the OA firmware version running on the enclosure, the status for each power supply will be displayed as follows. Detailed examples of utility output can be found under the System Requirements/Utility Limitations section below.

Onboard Administrator Firmware Version
Affected Power Supply Output status message
Unaffected Power Supply Output status message
Other potential output messages
Earlier than 2.25
REPLACE
OK
"Verify Via Website" "Unknown"
2.25 through 2.32
REPLACE
OK
"Unknown"
2.41 (or later)
REPLACE
OK
"Unknown"

The "verify via website" status can occur if both the revision and serial number of the power supply cannot be verified by the utility. This has only been observed if the OA firmware is not at version 2.25. However, when the utility output is entered at the website, all verification procedures are automatically performed for any power supplies returning a status of "Verify via website."

If the serial number is returned by the utility with a status of "Unknown," the power supply will automatically be replaced. Serial numbers shown as [Unknown] must be entered with the serial number of the enclosure in the format shown below:

16.236.136.20,USE7083BET,1,[Unknown],REPLACE

System Requirements/Utility Limitations

When preparing to download the PSTool utility, the operating system links that should be chosen refer to the OS that is being used on the PC workstation running the tool, and does not refer to the operating system being used on the server blades in the enclosure.

For PC workstations running Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003 operating systems:

PSTool.cmd is a batch file for Windows that collects pertinent information from the HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure. This tool is used to inspect the presence of a potentially affected power supply from a remote PC workstation. c7000 Enclosures with Onboard Administrator versions previous to version 2.25 will not be detected by the Microsoft Windows version of PSTool. Ensure that OA firmware is at version 2.25 or later before running the utility.

Download and run PSTool Version 1.30, currently available on the Customer Response website. A tty connection is required in order to run the utility on a workstation running Windows. This functionality is not included in the PSTool utility download; therefore, prior to downloading and running the utility, please follow the steps below:

1. Download Putty.exe from http://www.putty.org

2. Run Putty.exe.

3. Enter the IP address of one of the enclosures that will queried.

4. In the DOS window, when prompted, enter the ADMIN login name (press ENTER).

5. When prompted, enter the password (press ENTER).

6. The DOS window can now be closed.

Sample results generated by PSTool.cmd:

192.168.0.100,USE6371PD0,3,5A22B0AHLT7097,REPLACE
192.168.0.100,USE6371PD0,4,5A22B0AHLTJ0RS,OK
192.168.0.100,USE6371PD0,6,5A22B0AHLT7096,verify via website

For PC workstations running Linux or VMware operating systems:

The PSTool for Linux download component is packaged as a Windows executable and must be run on a Windows workstation in order to create the PSTool utility. This utility can then be run on a Linux workstation.

PSTool is designed to work on both x86 and x86_64 based Linux systems and on systems running VMware. After specifying one or more serial numbers to evaluate, the PSTool utility will respond with "Replace" if the power supply needs to be replaced, "OK" if the power supply is not affected, or "Verify via website" if both the revision and serial number could not be verified by the utility. When using multiple serial numbers, each serial number is evaluated and a status in printed.

Results generated by the PSTool utility for Linux/VMware:

15.57.63.72,O967MK0326,1,5A22B0AHLT705T,Replace
15.57.63.72,O967MK0326,6,5A22B0FHLWA83F,OK
192.168.1.102,O976MU0732,6,5A22B0AHLTA0BP,verify via website

The "verify via website" status can occur if both the revision and serial number of the power supply cannot be verified by the utility. This has only been observed if the OA firmware is not at version 2.25. However, when the utility output is entered at the website, all verification procedures are automatically performed for any power supplies returning a status of "Verify via website."

If the serial number is returned by the utilitywith a status of "Unknown," the power supply will automatically be replaced.
