IMPORTANT:
This firmware upgrade is considered a critical fix and is required to correct the issue detailed below. HP strongly recommends immediate application of required critical fixes. Neglecting to perform the required action could leave the server in an unstable condition, which could potentially result in sub-optimal server performance and excessive SCSI timeouts. By disregarding this notification, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related events.

A ProLiant server configured internally or externally with any of the HP Ultra320 SCSI hard drives listed in the Scope section below may exhibit excessive timeouts and reduced performance. This occurs when the dynamically adjusted seek time profile table in the drive firmware becomes degraded.
The reduced performance is characterized by occasional brief delays in command response times while the drive is servicing random workloads. In severe cases, the drive may exhibit command timeouts, which will require a server reboot for recovery.
There is no risk of data loss associated with this issue, which affects performance only. Because hard drive firmware is being provided to correct this issue, hard drive replacement is neither necessary nor authorized.
SCOPE
Any HP Ultra320 SCSI hard drive listed in Table 1 below using firmware version HPB4 (or earlier) or in Table 2 using firmware version HPB8 (or earlier):

RESOLUTION
The reduced performance and excessive timeouts have been corrected in firmware version HPB5 (and later) for the drives in Table 1 (above) and firmware version HPB9 (and later) for the drives in Table 2 (above). The firmware has been modified to detect and correct invalid seek time profile table values on drives that have already encountered this issue, as well as to eliminate the possibility of subsequent degradation of these same seek time profile table values. Upgrading the firmware will restore drives already exhibiting this issue to nominal levels of performance, as well as prevent any recurrence of this issue. Hard drive replacement is neither authorized nor necessary to correct this issue.
To locate the corrected firmware, perform the following:
