HP Deskjet 6980, 6980dt, and 6983 Printers - Using the HP Network Assistant for Printers to Set Up the Printer on a Wireless Home Network in Windows XP

Introduction
For Windows XP, you can use the HP Network Assistant for Printers to help you add your wireless-capable HP printer to your existing wireless home network. The wizard analyzes the wireless network and gathers the necessary information to input into the printer so that it can become part of the network.
NOTE: Your wireless network must already be set up. To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your particular access point (router). Or, you can bookmark this page in your Web browser, and use another wizard, the HP Network Assistant , to help you set up the wireless network.
IMPORTANT : HP Network Assistant for Printers does not install the printer software on the computer. After the wizard adds your printer to the network, make sure to complete Step three: Install the printer software on the computer .
Step one: Check requirements
To use the HP Network Assistant for Printers, you must have the following:
  • A wireless network in place
  • The password to your router if it has been changed from the default factory setting
NOTE: The HP Network Assistant for Printers supports most commercially available routers. If the router you are using is not supported, you will not be able to use the HP Network Assistant for Printers.
Step two: Download and run the HP Network Assistant for Printers
  1. Right-click this link, HP Network Assistant Download Manager , and then click Open in New Window .
  2. Click Next to automatically download and run the wizard.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your printer to the wireless network.
Step three: Install the printer software on the computer
Follow the steps for the installation method that you want to use (CD or download). Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost.
IMPORTANT : If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock , accept , continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit , or the installation will fail.
Method one: Install the software with the product CD
  1. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If it does not start automatically, Click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. On the Connection Type screen, select Wireless , and then click Next .
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
Method two: Download and install the software from the HP Web site
  1. Open a new window to browse to the Select Software and Drivers page:
    1. Right-click this link, Select Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window .
    2. If prompted, type your product number. You might also need to click it in a list of similar products.
    3. Click your operating system.
      The Select Software and Drivers page opens.
  2. In the Driver section, click the option that you want to download.
    NOTE: Many products have more than one driver option on the downloads page. HP recommends the Full Feature type of download, if available, to take advantage of all your product features.
  3. Click Download only . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  4. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  5. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
  6. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
  7. You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  8. On the Connection Type screen, select Wireless , and then click Next .
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
