Advisory: HP iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger - Pocket Data Protocol Activation Fails in Private Global System for Mobile Telecommunication/General Packet Radio Service Network Using Password Authentication Protocol

DESCRIPTION

When a private GSM/GPRS network uses Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) on an HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger, Packet Data Protocol (PDP) contexts fail to activate. When this issue occurs the device cannot connect to an Access Point Name (APN) and the following error message displays:

"User Authentication failed"

SCOPE

This issue affects all models of the HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger.

RESOLUTION

The issue can be worked around by performing the following steps:

  1. On the opening Windows screen, tap Start to display the drop-down menu.
  2. From the drop-down menu, tap Phone , Tools , Options , and the GPRS tab.
  3. Under GPRS authentication method , change "PAP" to "CHAP" and tap OK .
  4. Finally, return to the GPRS authentication method screen and change the selection from CHAP back to PAP. Tap OK .
