Printer interfaces
Figure 2: Printer Interfaces
1 - Universal Serial Bus (USB)
port: Used for plug and play printing. The USB port is a standard
interface available with the printer. The back of the printer has a dedicated
port for the USB.
2 - Power input: Located at
the back of the printer. During normal functioning, the printer consumes 47
Watts of power.
3 - Parallel (IEEE 1284)
connector: Allows the 1284 dongle to be attached to it, after which
the parallel port printing facility is made available (not for US).
The parallel connector is a built-in component of the
printer.
4 - Network connector:

RJ-45 connector that supports built-in 802.3 wired Ethernet. The network

Hardware components
The hardware components of the printer are as follows:
Paper guides - The paper guides should fit snugly but
gently against the edges of the media stack.
Output tray - The output tray holds the output of the
printer. It can hold a maximum of 150 sheets of paper at a
time.
Control panel - The control panel consists of Light
Emitting Diode (LED) indicators and buttons. LED indicators display information
about the status of the printer. The buttons in the control panel provide input
to the firmware to regulate printer tasks.
Top cover - The top cover helps clear paper jam. The top
cover is the top flap of the printer under which the carriage performs the
write operation on the media.
Ink cartridge cover - The ink cartridge cover protects ink
cartridges under it. Press and release the cartridge cover to
open it.
Tray 1 - Tray 1 can hold up to 150 sheets of paper, 30
sheets of transparencies, 22 sheets of envelopes, or 60 sheets of cards at a
time. By default, the printer draws the media from tray 1. Media loaded in tray
1 is aligned to the right and front guides.
Paper stack indicator - The paper stack indicator displays
the thickness of the paper stack in the input tray.
Printhead latch - The printhead latch provides access for
installing or removing printheads from their color-coded
slots.
Printheads - Printheads can be cleaned and replaced.
Improper cleaning may shorten the life of the printhead. Aligning the
printheads ensures good print quality.
Ink cartridges - There are four ink cartridges, one each
for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. The black cartridge prints up to 1,750
pages and the cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges print up to 1,750
pages.
Sensors
Sensors perform various functions, such as detecting media in the
tray, checking whether the carriage door is open, checking the carriage
movement, and detecting the attachment of the auto-duplex unit to the printer.
The printer has the following sensors:
Duplex Interconnect PCA (Accessory sensor) - Detects if a
auto-duplex unit or cleanout is attached to the printer.
Spot sensor - Differentiates the various media types and
their width.
Interruptible Paper Assembly (IPA) sensor - Enables the
printer to detect paper overlap. It then increases the printing speed to avoid
smudging of ink.
Main door or Ink Delivery System sensor - Detects if the
top cover or the ink delivery cover is left open.
Setting minimum margins
The document margins must match or exceed these minimum margin
settings in portrait orientation.
