HP iPAQ Pocket PC h4100, and h4300 Series - Using the Wireless LAN

Getting acquainted
The HP iPAQ Pocket PC can connect to an 802.11b Wireless LAN (WLAN) or connect directly to other WLAN-enabled devices. With WLAN, the following tasks can be performed:
Access the Internet
Send and receive e-mail
Access corporate network information
Use virtual private networks (VPN) for secure remote access
Use hot spots for wireless connectivity
|
NOTE:
|
Use of dial-up and wireless Internet, e-mail, corporate networks, and other wireless communications, such as Bluetooth-enabled devices, may require separately purchased additional hardware and other compatible equipment, in addition to a standard Wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure and a separately purchased service contract. Check with the service provider for availability and coverage in the area. Not all Web content may be available. Some Web content may require installation of additional software. |
Learning the terms
Before using WLAN technology it is recommended that you become familiar with the following terms.
| Term
|
Definition
|
|
Wireless Access Point |
The access point provides a wireless connection to a network (additional hardware). |
|
Infrastructure |
This connection mode uses wireless access points to connect to networks. |
|
Device-to-computer or ad-hoc |
This mode does not use access points. It is used in peer-to-peer network communications. All peers must be configured on the same channel. |
|
Hot spots |
Public or private areas where there is a wireless access point available. |
|
SSID or Network Name |
SSID is the acronym for the service set identifier. This identification number uses a maximum number of 32 characters and is case sensitive. |
|
Encryption (WEP) or IEEE 802.1X |
A set of security services used to protect 802.11 networks from unauthorized access. |
Getting started with the wireless LAN
Powering the WLAN on or off
To use WLAN on the HP iPAQ Pocket PC, first turn on WLAN and set up the device.
To turn the WLAN on or off, do the following:
From the Today screen, tap Start
, then HP iPAQ Wireless
.
Tap the WLAN
icon.
If the WLAN is powered on, the WLAN icon will turn from orange to green and the Wireless LAN indicator will flash green to indicate WLAN is on and connected or flash amber to indicate WLAN is on and not connected.
Shortcut
: If you have enabled Wireless LAN using Start >
iPAQ Wireless, from the Today screen, tap the Connections
icon (
or
), then tap Turn Wireless On or Turn
Wireless Off.
|
NOTE:
|
Even though the indicator flashes to indicate WLAN is
turned on, it does not necessarily mean a connection has been
established with another device or access point. |
If the WLAN is powered off, the WLAN icon will turn from green to orange.
Battery Saving Tip
: Turn WLAN off when you are not
using it. When WLAN is on, be sure one of the WLAN
power saving modes is selected.
|
NOTE:
|
Some Access Points and networks do not support one
or more of the power saving modes that are available. If you
cannot connect with a particular wireless network, try turning
off the WLAN Power Save modes. |
Automatically connecting to a network
If one or more networks are present, the Network Indicator (
) icon will appear in the Navigation bar. Tap the network
you want to connect to, then tap whether the network
connects to the Internet (does not use proxy settings) or Work
(uses proxy settings).
Figure 1: Network Indicator
If prompted for a Network Key (WEP), enter it and tap Connect
. If unsure, contact the network administrator.
Manually entering new network settings
A wireless network can be added either when the network is detected (the Network Indicator
icon is showing in the Navigation bar) or manually by entering setting information.
To manually add a wireless network, do the following:
Be sure the WLAN is turned on.
Tap the Connections
icon (
or
), then tap Settings
, the Advanced
tab, the Network Card
button, the Wireless
tab, then Add New Settings
.
Tap the General
tab and enter a network name (SSID).
|
NOTE:
|
If a network was detected in Step 2, the SSID is automatically entered and cannot be changed. |
In the Connects to:
box, select where the network connects to (the Internet or work).
If wanting to connect to an ad-hoc connection, tap the This is a device-to-computer (ad-hoc) connection
checkbox.
If authentication information is needed, from the Configure Wireless Network screen, tap the Authentication
tab.
|
NOTE:
|
To determine whether authentication information is needed, see the network administrator. |
Select the type of network authentication to use:
To use data encryption, tap the Data encryption (WEP enabled)
checkbox.
To use Shared Key authentication, tap the Network Authentication (Shared mode)
checkbox. Type the network key in the Network Key:
box.
If a network key is provided by the network automatically, tap the The Key is provided for me automatically
checkbox.
For increased security, tap the Enable network access using IEEE 802.1X
checkbox. This option should only be checked if it is supported by the network environment. Ask the network administrator if unsure.
Searching for networks to access
Networks that have already been configured are preferred networks and are listed in Wireless Networks
. You can choose
whether to connect only to preferred networks or to have your
iPAQ Pocket PC search for and connect to any available network
(preferred or not).
Tap the Connections
icon, Settings
, the Advanced
tab, the Network Card
button, then the Wireless
tab.
In the Networks to access
box, tap the type of network that is to be connected to (All Available
, Only access points
, or Only computer-to-computer
).
To connect only to networks that have already been configured, clear the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks
checkbox.
|
NOTE:
|
If the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks
checkbox is checked, the HP iPAQ Pocket PC will detect any new networks and provide the opportunity to configure them. |
