HP Digital Imaging - When Opening HP Director the Floppy Drive Is Continually Accessed or the Computer Locks up

Symptom
When opening the HP Director software, the floppy drive is scanned continually or the computer locks up with the process "HPQDSTCP" running in the background.
Cause
When the HP Director opens, it searches the computer for installed destination programs and it may check the Start Menu. The HP Director software then follows every shortcut inside of the Start Menu.
Solution
Remove any links to My Computer, My Network Places, or the Floppy drive from the Start Menu.
  1. Right-click the Start button and then left-click Explore . Windows Explorer opens to the Start menu.
  2. Check the right side of the open window for any references to any of the following:
    • My Computer
    • My Network Places
    • 3 1/2 Floppy
Figure 1: Windows Explorer open to the Start Menu
  3. Delete any of the above references found in the Start Menu.
    1. Right-click on the item to delete. A drop-down menu opens.
    2. Click Delete , and then click Yes to delete the shortcut.
  4. Try scanning from the HP Director, the issue should be resolved and the scanning software should function normally.
  5. If the problem still persists, check the rest of the Start Menu and its subfolders for any of the above listed shortcuts and delete them.
