HP LaserJet 1010, 1012, and 1015 Printers - Installing the Printer Software
 Introduction
For easy printer setup and access to the full range of printer features, HP strongly recommends
the installation of the software provided. Additionally, is it recommended to install the
software before setting up the printer.
The most recent drivers, additional drivers, and other software are available from the Internet and
other sources.
To view any available driver/software,

web page. Under Select a task and enter a product name/number:
, click Download drivers and software (and firmware)
then enter your product name or model number and click on the arrow
to the right of the search box to view any available driver/software updates for your product. To view and download them, click on your operating system. Note that these updates are product and operating system specific. Also, they may not be available for all operating systems.

System requirements for the printing software
For Windows systems
For both direct and network connection, all of the computers that use the printer must meet the
following minimum requirements as listed below.
IBM-compatible computer with an available USB or parallel port (HP LaserJet 1015 only) and the
following: - Windows 95 (printer driver only, parallel connections only, HP LaserJet 1015 only): Pentium
90 MHz processor or faster and 32 MB or more of RAM
- Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3 or higher, printer driver only, parallel connections only, HP
LaserJet 1015 only): Pentium 90 MHz processor or faster and 32 MB or more of RAM
- Windows 98
: Pentium 90 MHz processor or faster and 32 MB or more of RAM
- Windows Me
: Pentium 150 MHz processor or faster and 32 MB or more of RAM
- Windows 2000
: Pentium 133 MHz processor or faster and 64 MB or more of RAM
- Windows XP (32-bit)
: Pentium II 300 MHz processor or faster and 128 MB or more of RAM

Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 do not support USB. You must use a parallel connection (HP
LaserJet 1015 only) or network connection to use one of these operating systems. |
For Mac OS systems
Any Macintosh computer using the hp LaserJet 1010 series software has the following minimum
system requirements: |

The HP LaserJet 1010 printer model is not support in the Macintosh operating system; only the HP LaserJet 1012 and 1015 printer models are supported for Macintosh. |
- Mac OS 9.1 and higher
: PowerPC processor and 96 MB of RAM.
- Mac OS X v10.1 and v10.2
: Power Mac G3, G4, iBook, or eMac and 128 MB or more of
physical RAM. A built-in display or a display connected to Apple-supplied video card is
required.

100 MB or more of free hard disk space
- A USB port

For a direct connection to a Macintosh computer, the computer must have a USB port. Parallel cable
connections are not supported.- A CD-ROM drive (required for installation)

Installing printer software
The below sections provide instructions for installing the printer software on multiple operating systems.
Installing the print driver for Windows 95
To install the printer software for Windows 95, use the Add Printer Wizard. |

Click Start
and then click Settings
.
Click Printers
.
Double-click Add Printer
and then click Next
as necessary.
Click local printer
and then click Next
.
Click Have Disk
.
Click Browse
and then click the appropriate letter for the CD-ROM drive.
Double-click the correct folder for the desired language.
Double-click the Drivers
folder.
Double-click the Win9X_ME
folder.
Double-click the PCL 5e
driver folder.
Click the hp1015w5.inf
file to highlight it
Click OK
to complete the driver installation. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing the print driver for Windows NT 4.0
To install the printer software for Windows NT 4.0, use the Add Printer Wizard. |

Click Start
and then click Settings
.
Click Printers
.
Double-click Add Printer
and then click Next
as necessary.
Click My Computer
and then click Next
.
Click the appropriate port and then click Next
.

For a local connection, the port is LPT1. |
Click Have Disk
.
Click Browse
and then click the appropriate letter for the CD-ROM drive. If the letter for the
CD-ROM drive does not appear in the drop-down list, type the correct letter followed by a
colon and a forward slash. For example, type E:/
.
Double-click the correct folder for the desired language.
Double-click the Drivers
folder.
Double-click the WinNT
folder.
Double-click the PCL 5e
driver folder.
The hp1015w5.inf
file should be highlighted. If not, click it to highlight it.
Click Open
.
In the Install from Disk
dialog box, click OK
.
Click Next
.
Choose the printer name (this is optional), and the default printer options. Click Next
.
Select whether the printer will be shared, and click Next
.
Click Yes
, then print a test page, and then click Finish
to complete the driver installation.

From the Apple
menu, select the Chooser
.
Click the HP LaserJet vx.x
icon in the top left side of the Chooser dialog box.
Do one of the following, depending on how the computer and printer are connected.
USB: Go to Step 4.
AppleTalk: Select the correct AppleTalk Zone
for your printer in the lower left side of the
Chooser dialog box
Click the HP LaserJet 1010 series printer
name in the right side of the Chooser dialog box.
Close the Chooser
.
Accessing the print driver (Mac OS X v10.x)
Click the hard drive
icon on the desktop.
Click Applications
, and then click Utilities
.
Click Print Center
in Mac OS X v10.2 or Printer Setup Utility
in v.10.3.
Click Add Printer
. The Add Printer List dialog box appears.
Select USB
or AppleTalk
from the top menu.

If using AppleTalk, select the correct Zone from the second menu list. |
Select the printer name from the printer list.
Click Add.
Installing printer software for all other operating systems
Insert the software CD that came with the printer into the computer CD-ROM drive. Follow the
on-screen installation instructions. |

When the screen says looking for hardware devices
, plug the USB or parallel (1015 only) cable in and be certain the printer is powered up and in a ready state. |

USB connections
All HP LaserJet 1010 series printers support USB connections. The USB port is on the back of the
printer.
Connecting the USB cable
Plug the USB cable into the printer and then plug the USB cable into the computer. Figure 1: Connecting the USB cable
Parallel connections
In addition to USB, the HP LaserJet 1015 model also supports parallel connections. The parallel
port is on the back of the printer. Use an IEEE 1284-compliant parallel cable.
Connecting the parallel cable
Connect the parallel cable to the printer and then connect the other end of the parallel cable to the
