Blinking lights
The lights on the front of the product indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. Blinking lights can indicate that the product requires maintenance, or that the product is in an error state.

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
Issue: All lights are off
In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
Solution
Follow these steps to perform a product reset.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
With the product turned on
, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( 
) to turn it on.
Issue: All lights are blinking
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:

Solution one: Restart the printer
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn off the product, and then press it again to turn on the product.
If these steps resolved the issue

Solution two: Reset the printer
Follow these steps to perform a product reset.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
With the product turned on
, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (

Issue: The Power light is blinking

Wait while the product prepares the print job. The light stops blinking when the product receives all the print data.

Solution one: Load paper

Move the paper width guide and the paper length guide to their outermost positions.

Insert a stack of paper into the product, and then move the paper length guide in until it rests against the paper.

Do not push the paper too far into the product. This can cause the paper to jam into the rollers. |

Gently move the paper width guide in until it rests against the paper.

Solution two: Clear the paper jam
Follow these steps to clear a paper jam.
Step one: Remove paper from the tray
Remove any loose paper from the paper tray.

Do not remove jammed paper yet. |
Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the printer
Choose from the following options to clear a paper jam from the rear of the product.

Never remove jammed paper from the front of the product if you can remove it from the back of the product or from the paper tray. Pulling paper from the front can cause mechanical damage. |
Option one: Clear the jam from the duplexer
If you are using the duplexer, follow these steps to remove the duplexer and any jammed paper.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn off the product.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press and hold the buttons on each side of the duplexer, and then pull it toward you to remove it.

Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more jams are likely to occur. |
Open the duplexer access door. Press the button on the top of the door, and then pull the door down to open it.

Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the duplexer. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.
Close the access cover on the duplexer.
Reattach the duplexer to the rear of the product. Make sure both sides snap into place.

Option two: Clear the jam from the rear access door
Follow these steps to remove jammed paper from the rear of the product.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn off the product.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Remove the rear access door. Push the latch handles on the door inward, and then pull the door toward you to remove it.

Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

Step three: Clear the paper jam from the front of the printer
Follow these steps to check for and remove any jammed paper from the front of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product, if it is not already disconnected.
Open the top cover.
Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more jams are likely to occur. |
Close the top cover.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Step four: Make sure that the carriage can move freely
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
Open the top cover. Allow the carriage to move to the access area, if it is not there already.
With the product turned on
, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
| CAUTION:
|
You must disconnect the power cord to manually move the carriage without the risk of an electrical shock. |
Check for any paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage.
Reach inside the product through the paper output tray, and then manually move the carriage.
If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product
, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product
, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product
, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Remove any loose paper or other objects found.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the top cover.
Reconnect the power cord and the USB cable to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.

NOTE:

The product might go through a warm-up period of up to two minutes. The product lights might flash and the carriage might move. Wait until the warm-up period finishes before proceeding. |
Step five: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
Load plain paper in the paper tray.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
Press and hold the Power button.
Press the Resume button ( 
) four times. The self-test report prints.
If these steps resolved the issue
, and the test page prints
, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists
, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print

Solution three: Clean the paper rollers
Debris on the rollers can cause paper to jam inside the product. Follow these steps to clean the paper rollers.
Step one: Clean the rollers
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
On the rear of the HP product, push the two latch handles on the rear access door inward, and then pull the door toward you to remove it.

Moisten a lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the cloth.
Gently wipe the rollers with the cloth.
Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.

Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Reattach the rear access door. Make sure that it snaps into place.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

) to turn on the product.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Follow these steps to adjust the paper size settings in the HP product driver to match the paper you want to print on.

Cause
The carriage is stuck. This can occur for several reasons, such as obstructions in the path of the carriage, a paper jam, or improperly inserted cartridges.
Solutions
Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Solution one: Turn the printer off and on again
Follow these steps to turn the product off, and then on again to reset the print mechanism.
Step one: Turn the printer off and then on
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn the product off.
Wait 15 seconds.
Press the Power button to turn the product on.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
Load plain paper in the paper tray.
Press the Power button (

If you cannot remove the paper jam from the rear of the product, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product, if it is not already disconnected.
Open the top cover.
Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

Close the top cover.
Step four: Make sure that the carriage can move freely

Open the top cover of the product. The carriage might try to move into the access area. If so, allow the carriage to move to that position.
With the product turned on
, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

Check for any paper or obstructions that might restrict movement of the carriage.
Reach inside the product through the paper output tray, and then manually move the carriage.

Solution three: Make sure that the cartridges are inserted correctly
Improper placement or incorrect installation of the cartridges might cause the carriage stall error. Follow these steps to remove and then reinsert the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
Open the top cover. The carriage might try to move into the access area. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.
Raise each of the cartridge latches.

Slide the cartridge out of the slot, and then pull it toward you to remove it.

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical
connections. |

Repeat the previous steps to remove the other cartridge.
Remove any obstructions from under and around the carriage.
Step two: Reinsert the cartridges
Hold the cartridge so that the nozzles face down and the contacts face toward the carriage.
Slide the cartridge into the slot until it snaps into place.

Press the cartridge latch down until it snaps firmly into place.
Repeat these steps for the other cartridge.
Close the top cover.
Step three: Print a self-test report

Solution one: Check ink levels
Follow these steps to check ink levels by printing a diagnostic page.
Step one: Print a diagnostic page
- Make sure that the product is turned on, and that the paper tray contains unused, plain white paper.
Press and hold the Power button ( 
), and then press the Print Cancel button ( 
). Release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints.
Step two: Identify cartridges on the diagnostic page
Use the sample diagnostic page below to identify the problem cartridge.
Different cartridge combinations print different diagnostic page patterns. The diagnostic page might look different than the sample below, but right and left cartridges always print on the same areas of the page.

Ink level indicators appear in the middle of the diagnostic page. The bars with "E" (Empty) and "F" (Full) at each end show the cartridge ink levels. The solid color changes to a faded color as ink levels lower.

If you are using a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, or a cartridge previously used in another product, the ink level indicator might be inaccurate or unavailable. |

If both cartridges are not empty, press the Resume button ( 
), and then try printing again.
If one or both cartridges are empty, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Replace the cartridges
Follow these steps to remove empty cartridges, and then insert new cartridges.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
Open the top cover. The carriage might try to move into the access area. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.
Raise each of the cartridge latches.

Slide the cartridge out of its slot, and then pull it towards you to remove it.

Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then carefully remove the protective tape.

Hold the cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the product. Push the cartridge into the slot until it snaps into place.

Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridge.
Close the top cover.
If the Print Cartridge light remains on, press the Power button (

Solution one: Check cartridge compatibility

Solution two: Make sure that the cartridges are properly inserted
Follow these steps to remove and then reinsert the cartridges.

Remove any obstructions under and around the carriage.
Step two: Reinsert the cartridges
Hold the cartridge so that the nozzles face down and the contacts face toward the carriage.
Push the cartridge into the slot until it snaps into place.

Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridge.
Close the top cover.

Follow these steps to check if borderless printing settings are correct.
Open the image you want to print in your image editing software, and then set the image size to match the paper you are printing on.
Open the Printers folder.

Close the top cover. If the Print Cartridge light stops blinking, the defective cartridge was removed. Proceed to the next step to insert a replacement cartridge.
If the Print Cartridge light does not stop blinking, remove the other cartridge, and then reinsert the cartridge you just removed.
