HP Designjet 500PS Printer - HP/GL-2 Driver Installation


Introduction
This document contains instructions for installing the HP-GL/2 Driver required for your HP DesignJet 500PS printer, when equipped with the optional HP-GL/2 accessory card. Instructions are given for either "Typical" installation (recommended for most users), or "Custom" installation (recommended for system administrators), and for Windows 95/98, Windows 2000, and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems. Instructions for installing the driver manually are at the end of this document.
NOTE: The HP DesignJet 500PS printer is PostScript (R) enabled using an external RIP.
Windows 95/98
Typical installation
Use these instructions to perform the typical installation for Windows 95/98. The typical installation is recommended for most users. If you are a system administrator, click here to go to the section on custom installation for Windows 95/98.
  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The HP DesignJet Printers Software Setup window opens.
  2. If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM.
    1. Click Start .
    2. Select Run .
    3. In the command line box, type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by: :\SETUP (for example, type "D:\SETUP").
    4. Click OK .
  3. From the menu choices, select Install Printer , as shown in Figure 1.1

  4. In the Welcome window, click Next to continue.
  5. Click Yes to accept the HP Software License agreement.
  6. In the Select Printer window, select your HP DesignJet printer. Click Next .
  7. In the Setup Type window, choose Typical . Click Next .
  8. In the Printer Connection window, select Directly Connected or Connected Over a Network , and click Next .
  9. If you are connected over a network, select the type of network you are using. Click Next .
  10. In the Type of Applications window, select the types of application software that you will use. Select all that apply. Click Next . The driver installation program begins. (Click Next to continue.)
A list of helpful instructions will appear on your screen and will remain there during the installation process. Refer to these instructions to answer questions that may arise. After a few moments the Add Printer Wizard window will open.
Network Connection
  1. Type the network path or queue name of your printer. Also select whether you want to print from MS-DOS (R)-based programs. Select No . (Select Yes only if you have an MS-DOS driver that can print to a HP DesignJet series printer.) Click Next .
  2. Select whether you want your Windows-based programs to use this printer as the default printer, then click Next .
  3. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  4. When the installation is complete, you can register the printer and view the documentation. Click Finish to exit the printer setup program.
Direct Connection
  1. When the Add Printer Wizard window opens, click Have Disk . (You do not need to select the manufacturer and printer from the lists.)
  2. In the Install From Disk dialog box, type the location for your driver under "Copy manufacturer's files from" (the path is listed in the "Important Instructions" window), and click OK .
  3. Select your printer from the list, and click Next .
    NOTE: If you are prompted to keep or replace an existing driver, select Replace Existing Driver .
  4. Select the port to which your printer is connected, then click Next .
  5. Type a name for your printer, or use the name supplied by the Install Printer Wizard. Also select whether or not you want this printer to be the default printer for Windows-based programs. Click Finish . Installation begins.
  6. When installation is complete, you can register the printer and view the documentation. Select Finish to exit the printer setup program.
Custom installation for Windows 95/98
Use these instructions if you want to perform a custom installation for Windows 95/98. This procedure is recommended for system administrators.
  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The HP DesignJet Printers Software Setup window opens.
  2. If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM.
    1. Click Start .
    2. Select Run .
    3. In the command line box, type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by: :\SETUP (for example, type "D:\SETUP").
    4. Click OK .
  3. From the menu choices, select Install Printer , as shown in Figure 2.1.

  4. In the Welcome window, click Next to continue.
  5. Click Yes to accept the HP Software License agreement.
  6. In the Select Printer window, select your HP DesignJet printer. Click Next .
  7. In the Setup Type window, select Custom . Click Next .
  8. In the Printer Connection window, select Directly Connected or Connected Over a Network , and click Next .
  9. If you are connected over a network, select the type of network you are using, and click Next .
  10. In the Select Components window, select the components you want to install. The HP DesignJet 500PS, when equipped with the optional HP-GL/2 accessory card, requires the HP-GL/2 driver. Click Next . The driver installation program begins.
A list of helpful instructions will appear on your screen and will remain there during the installation process. Refer to these instructions to answer questions that may arise.
Network connection
  1. When the Add Printer Wizard dialog box opens, enter the network path or queue name of your printer. Select No for printing from MS-DOS. (Select Yes only in the case where you have an MS-DOS driver that can print to a HP DesignJet series printer.) Installation begins.
  2. When installation is complete, you can register the printer and view the documentation. Select Finish to exit the printer setup program.

Use these instructions to perform the typical installation for Windows 2000 and NT 4.0. The typical installation is recommended for most users. If you are a system administrator, click here to go to the section on custom installation for Windows 2000 and NT 4.0.
Typical installation
  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The HP DesignJet Printers Software Setup window opens.

  5. Choose whether this printer will be shared with other network users. If you choose sharing, give the printer a share name and select the operating system from the list. Click Next .
  6. Choose whether you want to print a test page. Printing a test page is recommended. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  7. When the installation is complete, you can register the printer and view the documentation.
Custom installation for Windows 2000 and NT 4.0
  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The HP DesignJet Printers Software Setup screen opens.
  2. If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM.
    1. Click Start .
    2. Select Run .
    3. In the command line box, type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by: :\SETUP (for example, type "D:\SETUP").
    4. Click OK .
  3. From the menu choices, select Install Printer , as shown in Figure 4.1

  4. In the Welcome window, click Next to continue.

  6. In the Select Printer window, select your HP DesignJet printer, and click Next .
  7. In the Setup Type window, select Custom . Click Next .

Manual driver installation
If you cannot or prefer not to use the standard installation process, you can install the driver from the CD-ROM by following these steps:
NOTE: If the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by network without being stored on another computer, you must create a network port before installing the driver (consult your network documentation or network administrator).
  1. Click Start , Settings , and then Printers to open the Printers dialog box.
  2. Double-click the Add Printer icon to open the Add Printer Wizard dialog box. (We recommend that you do not use the New Driver button in the Printer Properties dialog box to install or upgrade this driver.)
  3. Follow the steps displayed on your screen.
  4. Below are some questions that you may be requested to answer, depending on your system configuration.
How is this printer attached to your computer?
  1. Select:
    • Local Printer if the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by cable or network without being stored on another computer.
    • Network Printer if you will send output to the printer via another computer. In this case, all settings for the printer are managed by a printer server that has been set up by an administrator.
  2. Click Have Disk .
  3. In the Install From Disk dialog box, enter the location of the HP-GL/2 driver on the CD-ROM, and click OK . (The HP-GL/2 driver is in the folder called "HPGL2Ras.") Choose the correct path for your language and operating system.
  4. Select your HP DesignJet printer from the list and click Next .
Would you like to keep the existing driver or use the new one?
Select Replace Existing Driver .
If you are installing files for a new version and you see this question, we recommend replacing the existing driver.
Do you print from MS-DOS-based programs?
We recommend that you select No . Select Yes only in the case where you have an MS-DOS driver that can print to a HP DesignJet series printer.
