HP Designjet 500PS Printer - HP/GL-2 Driver Installation
 Introduction
This document contains instructions for installing the HP-GL/2 Driver required for your HP DesignJet 500PS printer, when equipped with the optional HP-GL/2 accessory card. Instructions are given for either "Typical" installation (recommended for most users), or "Custom" installation (recommended for system administrators), and for Windows 95/98, Windows 2000, and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems. Instructions for installing the driver manually are at the end of this document.

Windows 95/98
Typical installation
Use these instructions to perform the typical installation for Windows 95/98. The typical installation is recommended for most users. If you are a system administrator, click here
to go to the section on custom installation for Windows 95/98.
Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The HP DesignJet Printers Software Setup window opens.
If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM.
Click Start
.
Select Run
.
In the command line box, type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by: :\SETUP (for example, type "D:\SETUP").
Click OK
.
From the menu choices, select Install Printer
, as shown in Figure 1.1

In the Welcome window, click Next
to continue.
Click Yes
to accept the HP Software License agreement.
In the Select Printer
window, select your HP DesignJet printer. Click Next
.
In the Setup Type
window, choose Typical
. Click Next
.
In the Printer Connection
window, select Directly Connected
or Connected Over a Network
, and click Next
.
If you are connected over a network, select the type of network you are using. Click Next
.
In the Type of Applications
window, select the types of application software that you will use. Select all that apply. Click Next
. The driver installation program begins. (Click Next
to continue.)
A list of helpful instructions will appear on your screen and will remain there during the installation process. Refer to these instructions to answer questions that may arise. After a few moments the Add Printer Wizard window will open.
Network Connection
Type the network path or queue name of your printer. Also select whether you want to print from MS-DOS (R)-based programs. Select No
. (Select Yes
only if you have an MS-DOS driver that can print to a HP DesignJet series printer.) Click Next
.
Select whether you want your Windows-based programs to use this printer as the default printer, then click Next
.
Click Finish
to complete the installation.
When the installation is complete, you can register the printer and view the documentation. Click Finish
to exit the printer setup program.
Direct Connection
When the Add Printer Wizard window opens, click Have Disk
. (You do not need to select the manufacturer and printer from the lists.)
In the Install From Disk
dialog box, type the location for your driver under "Copy manufacturer's files from" (the path is listed in the "Important Instructions" window), and click OK
.
Select your printer from the list, and click Next
.

If you are prompted to keep or replace an existing driver, select Replace Existing Driver

Select the port to which your printer is connected, then click Next
.
Type a name for your printer, or use the name supplied by the Install Printer Wizard. Also select whether or not you want this printer to be the default printer for Windows-based programs. Click Finish
. Installation begins.
When installation is complete, you can register the printer and view the documentation. Select Finish
to exit the printer setup program.
Custom installation for Windows 95/98
Use these instructions if you want to perform a custom installation for Windows 95/98. This procedure is recommended for system administrators.
Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The HP DesignJet Printers Software Setup window opens.
If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM.
Click Start
.
Select Run
.
In the command line box, type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by: :\SETUP (for example, type "D:\SETUP").
Click OK
.
From the menu choices, select Install Printer
, as shown in Figure 2.1.

In the Welcome
window, click Next
to continue.
Click Yes
to accept the HP Software License agreement.
In the Select Printer
window, select your HP DesignJet printer. Click Next
.
In the Setup Type
window, select Custom
. Click Next

In the Printer Connection

or Connected Over a Network
, and click Next
.
If you are connected over a network, select the type of network you are using, and click Next
.
In the Select Components window, select the components you want to install. The HP DesignJet 500PS, when equipped with the optional HP-GL/2 accessory card, requires the HP-GL/2 driver. Click Next
. The driver installation program begins.
A list of helpful instructions will appear on your screen and will remain there during the installation process. Refer to these instructions to answer questions that may arise.
Network connection
When the Add Printer Wizard dialog box opens, enter the network path or queue name of your printer. Select No

Manual driver installation
If you cannot or prefer not to use the standard installation process, you can install the driver from the CD-ROM by following these steps:

If the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by network without being stored on another computer, you must create a network port before installing the driver (consult your network documentation or network administrator). |
Click Start
, Settings
, and then Printers
to open the Printers
dialog box.
Double-click the Add Printer
icon to open the Add Printer Wizard
dialog box. (We recommend that you do not use the New Driver
button in the Printer Properties
dialog box to install or upgrade this driver.)
Follow the steps displayed on your screen.
Below are some questions that you may be requested to answer, depending on your system configuration.
How is this printer attached to your computer?
Select:
Local Printer
if the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by cable or network without being stored on another computer.
Network Printer
if you will send output to the printer via another computer. In this case, all settings for the printer are managed by a printer server that has been set up by an administrator.
Click Have Disk
.
In the Install From Disk
dialog box, enter the location of the HP-GL/2 driver on the CD-ROM, and click OK
. (The HP-GL/2 driver is in the folder called "HPGL2Ras.") Choose the correct path for your language and operating system.
Select your HP DesignJet printer from the list and click Next
.
Would you like to keep the existing driver or use the new one?
Select Replace Existing Driver
.
If you are installing files for a new version and you see this question, we recommend replacing the existing driver.
Do you print from MS-DOS-based programs?
We recommend that you select No
. Select Yes
only in the case where you have an MS-DOS driver that can print to a HP DesignJet series printer.
