HP LaserJet III series printers
Self-test and Configuration page
Press and hold the PRINT FONTS/TEST
key for about five seconds.
Cold reset
Turn off the printer.
Hold the ONLINE
key down while turning on the printer.
Continue to hold the ONLINE
key until the printer reads COLD RESET
, about three seconds.
Release the ONLINE
button. INITIALIZING
will appear, followed by RESTORING FACTORY SETTINGS
, and then the product will enter OFFLINE
status.
Press the ONLINE
key to put the printer back on line.
| CAUTION:
|
A cold reset will return the printer to the factory default settings. The HP Jetdirect card will also reset unless removed. Print the Configuration page or remove the HP Jetdirect card before performing a cold reset to prevent losing any settings.

Engine test
Locate the button that is located in the front cover of the printer, it is about 2.5 inches to the right of the lower cassette's upper-right corner. Press this button to perform the Engine Test.
HP LaserJet III/IIID series printer
Self test and Configuration pages
Press the PRINT FONT/TEST
button until 05 TEST
displays.
Continuous self test
Press the PRINT FONT/TEST
button until 04 TEST
displays.
Engine test
Locate the button that is under a removable panel on the bottom right side towards the back of the printer. Press this button to perform the Engine Test.
HP LaserJet IIIP series printer

Press the ALT

buttons until 05 TEST
displays.
Cold reset
Press and hold the ONLINE
button while turning on the printer.
Engine test
Take off the back panel of the printer by removing two screws at the top of each corner. Locate the button that is in the hole toward the top left corner above the serial port. Press this button to perform the Engine Test.

Engine test
Locate the button that is located in the front cover of the printer; it is about 2.5 inches to the right of the lower cassette's upper right corner. Press this button to perform the Engine Test.
HP LaserJet 4L series printer
Self Test and Configuration pages
Press the front panel button until data light blinks.
Continuous Self test
Disconnect from power.
Press and hold the front panel button while connecting power.
Hold five seconds for the HP LaserJet 4L series printer and 15 seconds for the HP LaserJet 4ML series printer. All lights on the printer will stay lit.
To stop the test:
Press the front panel button until all lights begin to blink in sequence.
Engine test
Open the printer's I/O door. Press the button that is located in the hole under the parallel port to perform the Engine Test.
HP LaserJet 4P series printer
Self Test and Configuration page
Press the ONLINE
key to take the printer offline.
Press the MENU
key until TEST MENU
displays.
Press the ITEM
key until SELF TEST
displays.
Press the ENTER
key, the display will read 05 SELF-TEST
.
Continuous Self-Test
Press the ITEM
key until CONT SELF TEST
displays.
Cold Reset
Turn off the printer.
Press the ONLINE
key while turning on the power.
Continue to hold the ONLINE
Key until 08 COLD RESET
appears.
Release the key, then 05 SELF-TEST
will display. After 30 seconds, 00 OFFLINE
will display, indicating that the cold reset is complete.
Press ONLINE
to return the printer to the READY
state.
Engine test
The HP LaserJet 4P and 4MP series printers do not have a user accessible TEST PRINT
button. Only a service technician can print an engine test. This is a very complicated procedure, and requires the use of a service manual to complete.
HP LaserJet 4V series printer
Self Test and Configuration page
Press the ONLINE
button to take the printer OFFLINE

button until TEST MENU
appears on the display.
Press the ITEM
button until SELF TEST
appears.

Continuous Configuration pages

Release the ONLINE
button when 08 COLD RESET
appears on the display and 5 SELF-TEST
will display, followed by 00 OFF LINE
.
Press the ONLINE
button to return to the READY
mode.
Engine Test
The button, labeled TEST PRINT, is located under the MIO slot on the back-center of the printer.
