HP Color LaserJet 9500 Series Printer - Understanding the Printer Control Panel

Introduction
This document describes the functions and features of the control panel lights, buttons, and status indicators. It also explains procedures for using control panel help, menus, and keypad shortcuts.
Control panel layout
The control panel includes three indicator lights; four navigation buttons; a help button; a Pause/Resume button; a Cancel Job button; a numeric keypad; and a graphical display that can show up to four lines of text, supplies-status indicators, and printer animations.

Control panel indicator lights
The following table explains the control panel indicator light patterns.

On The printer has experienced a critical error. Note the error message, follow the instructions provided on the graphical display and in the help menu, and then turn the printer off and then on again.
Blinking Action is required. See the control panel display for additional help in resolving the error condition.
Control panel supplies status indicators
When the printer is in the Ready state, or if a supply replacement error occurs, the control panel shows status indicators for the four print cartridges, the four image drums, and the image cleaning kit.
NOTE: If in the menus, press Pause/Resume to return to the Ready state.
The levels of the blue bars in the status indicators drop as the supplies are used. The printer shows a warning message when a supply is low and needs to be ordered. When a supply runs out, the printer shows an error message, and the supply must be replaced in order to continue printing.
See Figure 2 and Figure 3 for explanations of the indicators.

Using control panel menus
Menus available on the control panel are the means for adjusting many of the printer settings.
NOTE: Most printing tasks can be configured on a computer through the software application or printer driver, rather than on the control panel of the printer. Printer-driver settings override control panel settings. Software program settings override both printer-driver settings and control panel settings. If it is not possible to open a control panel menu or use an item, it is either not an option for the printer or the network administrator has locked the function (if this is the case, the control panel reads "ACCESS DENIED MENUS LOCKED"). See the network administrator.
Some menus or menu items appear only if certain options are installed. For example, the DUPLEX menu item appears only if a duplexer is installed in the printer. The Quick Copy and Stored Job features both require that an optional hard disk is installed in the printer.
When additional trays or other accessories are installed in the printer, new menu items automatically appear.
The following table briefly describes the control panel menus. Users typically use the first three menus (Retrieve Job, Information, and Paper Handling). Administrators and service technicians use the other menus (Configure Device, Diagnostics, and Service), which can be protected by use of a personal identification number (PIN). See the user reference guide for a complete list of the setting and possible values in each menu.
Menu Explanation
Retrieve Job Use the Retrieve Job menu to see the jobs stored on the device. The jobs are listed first by user name and then by job name.
Information menu Use the Information menu to see the printable menu map and other information pages.
Paper Handling Use the Paper Handling menu to set media type (and size if not detected) for each printer tray.
Configure Device Administrators use the Configure Device menu to set defaults, I/O ports, diagnostics, and resets.

  • Printing submenu
  • Print Quality submenu
  • System Setup submenu
  • Stacker, Stapler Stacker, or Multi-function Finisher (if installed)
  • I/O submenu
  • Resets submenu
Diagnostics Administrators use the Diagnostics menu to view printer error messages, test print quality, or verify paper path functionality.
Service Service technicians use the Service menu to monitor printer status and to provide appropriate assistance during a service call.
Navigating the control panel menu and changing settings
Use the following steps to change a control panel menu setting.
  1. Press (Select) to open the menus.
  2. Use (Up button) or (Down button) to scroll to the desired menu, and then press (Select) to select it. Depending on the menu, it might be necessary to repeat this step to select a submenu.
  3. Use (Up button) or (Down button) to scroll to the desired item, and then press (Select) to select it.
  4. Some items provide a list of values to choose from. For these, use (Up button) or (Down button) to scroll to the desired value, and then press (Select). For items that require a numeric value, use the numeric keypad to type the value, and then press (Select) to select it. An asterisk (*) appears next to the selection on the display, indicating that it is now the default.
  5. At any time use (Back button) to back up one level in the menu tree or to clear a numeric value.
  6. Press Pause/Resume to close the menu.
NOTE: Printer-driver settings override control panel settings.
Printing the control panel menu map
From the control panel, you can print a menu map that shows the layout and settings of the control panel menu items. Additional menu items can appear in the control panel, depending on the options that are currently installed in the printer.
To print a control panel menu map
  1. Press (Select) to open the menus.
  2. Use (Up button) or (Down button) to scroll to INFORMATION, and press (Select).

  • When the printer is in a Ready state ("READY" appears on the control panel display)
