HP LaserJet Products - DOT4 Port Printer Not Visible or Print Driver Is Using the Windows USB Port
ISSUE:
When an HP LaserJet 1010, 1012, 1015, 1200, 1300, 2200, 2300, 3200, 3300, 4200 and 4300 series product is installed on a Windows USB port, one of the following may occur:
Bidirectional communication does not function
Product does not print correctly
Product prints correctly, but DOT4 port is not installed

NOTE:

Insufficient power can prevent the DOT4 port from setting up correctly. Verify that the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a power strip. The original power cord that came in the box with the printer should also be used to ensure adequate power to the printer. |
SOLUTION:
Verify which port the printer is using and perform the following to resolve the issue.

Verifying that the driver is printing to a USB port
Click Start
, Settings
, and Printers
from the desktop menu bar.
In the Printers folder, right-click the LaserJet 1010, LaserJet 1200
, LaserJet 1300
, LaserJet 2200
, LaserJet 2300
, LaserJet 3200
, or LaserJet 3300
icon, and select Properties
from the drop-down menu.
In the Properties window, click the Details
tab (in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, click the Ports
tab).
In the Details/Ports tab, verify which port the driver is using. The DOT4 port for the desired printer should be selected.
Troubleshooting port issue
If the driver is printing to the Microsoft USB port (for example, USB001), perform the following to remove the port:
On the desktop, right-click the My Computer
icon, and select Properties
from the drop-down menu.

In the System Properties window (Hardware tab in Windows 2000 and Windows XP), click the Device Manager
tab (Device Manager
button in Windows 2000 and Windows XP).
Locate the Universal Serial Bus Controllers (USBC)
at the bottom of the list.
Expand the USBC
list by clicking the Plus (+)
sign.
If USB printing support is visible, right-click the port and select Remove

in Windows 2000 and Windows XP) from the drop-down list, see the Figure below. |

Click Yes
when the warning appears.
Remove or rename the MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF
(USBPRINT.INF
in Windows 2000 and XP) file.
Select Start
, Find/Search
, and Files and Folders
.
In the Named box, type MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF
(USBPRINT.INF
in Windows 2000 and XP) and click Find
. The file should be located in the C:\Windows\Inf\Other folder.
If found, right-click the file, select Delete
from the drop-down menu, and click Yes
.

Highlight MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF
(USBPRINT.INF
in Windows 2000 and XP), click File
, and then Rename
.
On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes
.
-OR-
Rename the file MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.OLD
(USBPRINT.OLD
in Windows 2000 and XP) and click OK
.
Close the search screen.

NOTE:

MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF is a hidden file. Windows Me will not search for hidden files as earlier versions of Windows do. It is necessary to manually set up Windows Me to search for hidden files. Select Tools
, then Folder Options
. In the folder options, select Show all hidden files
. Close the window and search as indicated in Step 2. |
Install the DOT4 port.
Place the installation CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
On the Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
In the System Properties window (Hardware tab in Windows 2000 and Windows XP), click the Device Manager
tab (Device Manager
button in Windows 2000 and Windows XP).
Refresh the Device Manager using one of the following methods: Click Refresh
at the bottom of the window.
In Windows 2000, click Scan for Hardware Changes
at the top of the screen and select the CD-ROM drive.
The Add New Hardware Wizard will appear on the screen and should proceed without prompting, installing the correct DOT4 appliances needed for bidirectional communication.
Change the printer port.
Click Start
, Settings
, and Printers
.
Right-click the printer icon and select Properties
from the drop-down list.
Click the Details/Port
tab and find the setting.
Change the port setting to DOT4
. If there is more than one DOT4 listed in the Ports, select the one with the highest number at the end. (For example, select Dot4_003 instead of Dot4_001.)
If Steps 1 through 4 are not successful, uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers. Reference one of the following documents for uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver:
