HP LaserJet 1200, 1300, 2200, 2300, 3200, and 3300 Series Products - PCL XL Errors Occur When Printing Using the PCL6 Printer Driver

ISSUE:
PCL XL error pages that print from an HP LaserJet 1200, 1300, 2200, 2300, 3200 or 3300 series product when a PCL 6 printer driver is in use typically indicate a communication issue. Sometimes this issue is caused by an incompatibility between the Enhanced XL language and the software application. PCL XL errors typically appear as follows:
  • PCL XL Error
  • Subsystem: KERNEL
  • Error: IllegalOperatorSequence
  • Position: 52
SOLUTION:
Perform the following in the order provided:
  1. Unplug the parallel, USB, or network data cable from the back of the product.
  2. Verify that the product is in Ready Mode.
  3. Print a Configuration Report.
    For the HP LaserJet 1200 series printers
    Press the GO button on the HP LaserJet 1200 series printer control panel to print out the Configuration page.
    For the HP LaserJet 1300 series printers
    Press and hold the GO button on the HP LaserJet 1300 series printer control panel for five seconds to print out the two page Configuration Report.
    For the HP LaserJet 2200 series printers
    Simultaneously press and release the GO and JOB CANCEL buttons to print out the Configuration page.
    For the HP LaserJet 2300 series printers
    1. Press (Select) to open the menus.
    2. Use (Up button) or (Down button) to scroll to INFORMATION , and then press (Select).
    3. Use (Up button) or (Down button) to scroll to PRINT CONFIGURATION , and then press (Select).
    For the HP LaserJet 3200 series printers
    1. Use the < or > button until the display reads REPORTS , then press ENTER/MENU once.
    2. Use the < or > button to select CONFIGURATION REPORT then press ENTER/MENU to print the report.
    For the HP LaserJet 3300MFP series printers
    1. Use the < or > button until the display reads REPORTS then press MENU/ENTER once.
    2. Use the < or > button to select CONFIG REPORT then press MENU/ENTER to print the report.
  4. If the configuration page does not print or garbled characters or symbols appear on the page, have the printer serviced. If the configuration page prints correctly, proceed to the next step.
  5. Remove any external pass-through devices such as switchboxes, tape drivers, or scanners.
  6. Reattach the cable to the printer and verify the cable connection.
    • Verify that the parallel cable is IEEE-1284 compliant.
    • Try a different IEEE-1284 cable.
    • Connect the printer directly to the parallel port on the computer. If the printer cannot be directly connected to the computer, try a different network cable or network port on the hub.
    • Verify the USB cable meets specifications
      • USB 1.1 compliant full-speed cable (compatible with USB 2.0 specifications)
      • USB 2 high-speed cable
      • USB specifications limit the length of a USB cable to 5 meters (16.4 feet)
  7. Disable the high-speed and advanced functions on the control panel of the product. (HP LaserJet 2300 series printers only)
    1. Press the Select ( ) button on the control panel.
    2. Press the Down Arrow ( ) until Configure Device appears in the control panel display and then press Select ( ).
    3. Press the Down Arrow ( ) until I/O appears in the control panel display and then press Select ( ).
    4. Press the Down Arrow ( ) until Parallel Input appears in the control panel display and then press Select ( ).
    5. Press Select ( ) and then press the Up Arrow ( ) until No is highlighted in the control panel display.
    6. Press Select ( ) to save the setting.
    7. Press the button to return the previous menu.
    8. Press the Down Arrow ( ) to highlight Advanced Functions in the control panel display and then press Select ( ).
    9. Press the Up Arrow ( ) until Off is highlighted in the control panel display, and then press Select ( ) to save the setting.
    10. Press the Pause/Resume button to return to the Ready state.
  8. Change the printer port mode (on parallel connections only). The parallel port mode of the computer may need to be changed to provide the best performance with an HP LaserJet series printer. ECP mode generally provides the best performance with HP LaserJet series printers. If the ECP port mode option does not work, try other available modes starting with bidirectional mode (bidirectional mode is not available on all computers). The parallel port mode may be changed on most computers by entering setup or accessing the computer's BIOS. Consult the computer's documentation, contact the manufacturer for assistance, or click here for documentation on Changing Parallel Port Modes at the HP Web site.
  9. Disable bidirectional printing support. See the manufacturer documentation that came with the computer for assistance.
    Windows 98 and Me
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet printer icon , Properties from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the Details tab and then click the Spool Settings button.
    4. Select Disable bidirectional support for this printer .
    5. Click the Apply button and then click OK until the printers window is closed.
    Windows 2000 and XP
    1. Select Start , Settings , then Printers or Printers and Faxes (Windows XP) from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet printer icon , Properties from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the Ports tab and uncheck Enable bidirectional support .
    4. Select the Advanced tab and verify that Keep printed documents is not checked.
    5. Click the Apply button and then click OK until the printers window is closed.
  10. Change the properties of the PCL 6 printer driver using one of the following methods:
    Windows 95, 98, and Me
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet 1200 PCL6 driver , (or HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the Details tab.
    4. Click Port Settings .
    5. Remove the checks from the following option boxes and click OK: Spool MS-DOS print jobs and Check port state before printing .
    6. Select OK to return to the Windows desktop screen.
    Windows NT 4.0
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet PCL6 driver (or HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the General tab.
    4. Select Print Processor .
    5. Set the Default Datatype setting to RAW , then select OK .
    6. Select OK to return to the Windows desktop screen.
    Windows 2000/XP (classic view)
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet PCL6 driver (or HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the Advanced tab.
    4. Select Print Processor .
    5. Set the Default Datatype to RAW and select OK .
    6. Select OK to return to the Windows desktop screen.
  11. In Windows 95 only, update the version of the LPT.VXD file currently on the system. Perform the following to verify the current version of lpt.vxd file in use on the system.
    1. Select Start , Find , then Files or Folders from the Windows 95 desktop.
    2. Type lpt.vxd in the Named: text box.
    3. Change the Look In: box to indicate the C:\ drive.
    4. Click Find Now .
    5. Highlight the file in the results list.
    6. Right-click the file name and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
    7. Select the Version tab.
    8. Contact the PC manufacturer for information on obtaining the most current version of the file.
  12. Try modifying the HP LaserJet PCL6 driver (HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) settings when the issue is isolated to specific applications or documents.
    Windows 95, 98, and Me
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet PCL6 driver (HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the Finishing tab.
    4. Select the Custom setting under Print Quality then select Details .
    5. Select a lower resolution, such as 600 dpi .
    6. Select Send TrueType as Bitmap in the Print Quality Details window then click OK .
    7. Select OK to close the window.
    8. Print a page from the application or document in question.
    Windows NT 4.0
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet PCL6 driver (HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) icon and select Document Defaults from the drop-down menu.
    3. Select the Finishing tab.
    4. Select the Custom setting under Print Quality then select Details .
    5. Select a lower resolution such as 600 dpi .
    6. Select Send True Type as Bitmaps in the Font Settings window and then click OK .
    7. Click OK to close the Document Defaults window.
    8. Print a page from the application or document in question.
    Windows 2000/XP (custom view)
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet PCL 6 driver (HP LaserJet 1200/1300/2200/2300/3200/3300 driver) icon and select Printing Preferences from the drop down menu.
    3. Select the Finishing tab.
    4. Select the Custom setting under Print Quality , then select Details .
    5. Select a lower resolution, such as 600 dpi .
    6. Select Send TrueType as Bitmaps in the Font Settings window and then click OK .
    7. Click OK to close the Printing Preferences window.
    8. Print a page from the application or document in question.
  13. Remove any additional memory that may have been added to the printer after the printer was purchased. Refer to the User's Manual that was supplied with the printer for memory removal instructions.
  14. Try using a different font within the application or document in question.
  15. Try to print using the PCL5e printer driver that came with the HP LaserJet printing system.
  16. Try printing using an alternate pre-installed Microsoft printer driver, such as the HP LaserJet 4 Plus or HP LaserJet 5L PCL driver.
    1. Select Start , Settings , and then Printers from the Windows desktop.
    2. Double-click the Add Printer icon. Click Next when the Add Printer Wizard screen appears.
    3. Select Local Printer and uncheck (or deselect) the box that reads "automatically detect my plug and play printer ", and then click Next .
    4. Select HP under Manufacturer, and HP LaserJet 4 Plus or HP LaserJet 5L under Printers, and then click Next .
    5. Verify the printer name reads HP LaserJet 4 Plus or HP LaserJet 5L and then click Next .
    6. Select the port (e.g. LPT1) that the HP LaserJet is connected to under Available Ports .
    7. Select No next to the message "Do you want your Windows-based program to use this driver as the default printer? " and then click Next .
    8. Select Yes next to the message "Would you like to print a test page? Recommended " and then click Finish .
    9. The printer's icon or printer name should appear in the Printers screen.
    10. Click Yes when the message "Did the test page print correctly?" appears, and close the Printers screen. The installation is complete.
    11. When printing from a document that causes a PCL XL error, select File from the menu bar in the application and change the print driver to the alternate print driver (HP LaserJet 4 Plus or HP LaserJet 5L) and try printing the document again.
