HP LaserJet 9000, 9040, 9050, 9000Lmfp, 9000mfp, 9040mfp and 9050mfp Series Printers - Installing the Printer Maintenance Kit

Introduction
The parts in the end user installable printer maintenance (PM) kit need to be replaced every 350,000 pages. The printer/mfp control panel will display the message Perform Printer Maintenance when the kit needs to be installed. Replacing the parts in the PM kit is a part of normal printer maintenance.
The printer maintenance kit consists of the following parts:
  • One Fuser assembly
  • One Transfer Roller assembly
  • Seven Feed rollers (two per tray, includes rollers for Tray 4 and one roller for Tray 1)
  • Three Pickup rollers (one per tray, includes roller for Tray 4)

    NOTE: Variables such as media, environment, and usage can prematurely wear these parts out. See the HP LaserJet Printer Family Print Media Guide (http://www.hp.com/support/ljpaperguide) for more information about suitable media, environment, and use conditions.
Options for ordering the printer maintenance kit
There are several options for purchasing the printer maintenance kit.
  • The Embedded Web Server (EWS) can be configured to e-mail an alert to specified users such as a Systems Administrator when the printer senses that the maintenance kit needs to be installed (the control panel will also display the Perform Printer Maintenance message at this time). From the EWS the printer maintenance kit can be ordered directly from HP. For more information on how to set up and use the EWS, see the Embedded Web Server User Guide (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/manual_set/bpl10150.pdf).
  • The printer maintenance kit can also be ordered from the HP Small and Medium Business Store (SMB) Web site, the part number is H3730A for the 110V kit and H3731A for the 220V kit. Customers can also purchase installation of the PM kit along with the kit itself. Click here to view all the HP Care Pack, Warranty/ Service Upgrades and HP Maintenance Kit Replacement services.   • HP offers many warranty upgrade options. These HP Care Packs let customers choose exactly the warranty and service options that are right for any size business. Look at the HP Care Pack and Warranty/Service Upgrade sections for more detailed information and pricing.
Instructions on how to replace the parts included in the maintenance kit
  1. First, turn the printer/mfp off and unplug it from its power source. Let it cool down for at least 30 minutes, this allows the fuser to cool off.

How to replace the transfer roller assembly
  1. Open the front door of the printer.

  2. Rotate the large green lever downward.

  3. Pinch the blue tab on the transfer roller assembly and pull it out of the printer. Observe how it is installed before removing it.

  4. Remove the new transfer roller assembly from its packaging.
    CAUTION: Do not touch the black foam roller. Skin oils can damage the roller.

  5. Insert the new transfer roller assembly into the printer until it locks into place.

  6. Press the white button on the large green lever, and rotate the lever upward until it locks into place.
    NOTE: Do not force the lever into position. If the lever does not rotate easily, repeat Steps 5 and 6 to reseat the transfer roller assembly.

  7. Lock the green lever and close the front door.

How to replace the tray rollers
  1. Open Tray 2 and pull it out until it stops.

  2. Remove the tray by lifting the outer end while pulling the tray free of the printer. Do the same for for Tray 3.

  3. You will gain access to the rollers through the empty paper tray slots (three rollers per tray).

  4. To remove the rollers from the shafts, pinch the tab on the end of each roller, and then slide it off the shaft. The rollers are as shown:
    • Pickup roller (Type 1)
    • Feed roller (Type 2)
    • Separation roller (Type 2)
    CAUTION: Do not remove the black spacer from behind the separation roller. If the black spacer comes off, carefully insert it metal edge first onto the shaft.

  5. Remove the rollers from the plastic bag. You will use one Type 1 roller and two Type 2 rollers per tray.

  6. Slide the new rollers onto each shaft until they lock into place.

  7. Reinstall Trays 2 and 3. If you do not have an optional Tray 4 (2000-sheet Input Tray), proceed to the next section.

  8. To replace the Type 2 rollers in Tray 4 (2000-sheet Input Tray): Open the tray, then remove any paper and set it aside.
    WARNING: To avoid injury, the paper must be removed before Tray 4 is pulled from the printer.

    CAUTION: Tray 4 could be damaged if it is dropped. Use both hands when removing the tray from the printer. Pull Tray 4 out until it stops. Locate the blue release buttons that are on both sides of the tray, and then slide the buttons toward the front of the tray. Pull the tray away from the printer.

  9. To gain access to the separation roller, slide the blue roller shield toward the back of Tray 4.

  10. Pinch the tab on the end of each roller, and then slide the roller off the shaft.

  11. Locate three Type 2 rollers contained in your kit.

  12. Slide the new rollers onto each shaft until they lock into place. Note: You do not need to slide the blue shield back over the roller. It will return to position when Tray 4 is closed.

  13. Using both hands to grasp the sides of the tray, reinstall Tray 4. Replace the paper, if desired.

How to replace the Fuser
WARNING: Be sure the printer has been turned off and unplugged for at least 30 minutes before attempting to remove the fuser. The Fuser may be very hot.
  1. If a paper-handling output accessory is installed, reposition it so that the left door of the printer is fully accessible.
  2. Open the left door.
    NOTE: If a face-up bin is installed, it is not necessary to remove it to complete this procedure.

  3. If a duplex printing accessory is installed, remove it by pushing downward on the green tab and sliding the accessory out.

  4. Locate the small blue levers on each side of the fuser assembly and rotate them toward the center as shown.

  5. Lift up on the finger handle slightly and pull the assembly away from the printer until it stops.

  6. Grasp the blue handle on the top of the fuser assembly with one hand. Place the other hand on the finger handle. Tilt the fuser assembly downward, then pull up slightly to remove it from the printer.

  7. Remove the new fuser assembly from its package. Remove any orange packing material from the new fuser assembly by pulling straight out.

  8. Align the fuser assembly with the bars on each side of the opening. Lift up slightly, and slide the fuser assembly firmly into the printer.

  9. Once you are sure the fuser assembly is in place, rotate the blue levers away from the center as shown to lock the fuser assembly in place. Repeat the previous step if the blue levers do not rotate.

  10. Avoid moving the blue, T-shaped envelope levers inside the printer. Note: If the envelope levers are moved to the top position, toner may not adhere correctly to the paper when you resume printing.

  11. Reinstall the duplex printing accessory if it was removed.

  12. Close the left door.

  13. Reconnect the power cord.
    If you have a paper handling output accessory, move it back into position.
How to reset the maintenance kit page count (LaserJet 9000 Series Printers)
After installing the new maintenance kit, the control panel displays the message, New Maintenance Kit , with No highlighted. Use the (Up or Down Arrows) to scroll to Yes , and press (Select).
To manually reset the Maintenance count after installing the kit:
  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press and hold the Select button.
  3. Turn the printer on while holding the Select button.
  4. Continue to hold the Select button down until all three control panel lights (LEDs) illuminate, and then release it.
  5. When the LEDs are on, press the Up Arrow key, then the Select button.
How to reset the maintenance kit page count (LaserJet 9000mfp/9000Lmfp)
To reset the maintenance kit page count on the HP LaserJet 9000Lmfp and 9000mfp do the following:
  1. Press and hold the 6 button , then press the power button to turn the MFP on.
  2. When the three LEDs are on, release the 6 button.
  3. SELECT LANGUAGE appears on the screen. Press and release the 3 button. NEW MAINTENANCE KIT appears on the screen.
  4. Press and release the 6 button again.
How to reset the maintenance kit page count for the (LaserJet 9040/9050 Series Printers)
  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Turn the printer back on and wait for the memory count, when the printer starts counting memory press the Select button.
  3. Continue to press the Select button until all of the control panel LEDs are illuminated, then release the button.
  4. Select Language will appear on the control pane display when the Select button in released.
  5. Use the Up Arrow to scroll to NEW MAINTENANCE KIT .
  1. Press the Select button.
To verify that the maintenance kit is reset to zero, print a configuration page by using the following procedure :
  1. Press (check mark).
  2. Use or (up or down arrow) to scroll to INFORMATION and press (check mark).
  3. Use or (up or down arrows) to scroll to PRINT CONFIGURATION and press (check mark).
How to reset the maintenance kit page count for the (LaserJet 9040mfp/9050mfp)
  1. Press the power button to turn the MFP on.
  2. When the memory count starts, press and hold the 6 button.
  3. When the three LEDs are on, release the 6 button. SELECT LANGUAGE appears on the screen.
  4. Press and release the 3 button until NEW MAINTENANCE KIT appears on the screen.
  5. Press and release the 6 button again.
