HP LaserJet 4100 Series Printers - Replacing the Maintenance Kit


Replace certain parts when the PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCE message appears on the printer's Control Panel display. This will help ensure that the printer maintains optimum performance.
The maintenance message appears every 200,000 pages. To check the number of pages the printer has printed, print either a configuration page or a supplies status page (see the Configuration Page or Supplies Status Page sections in the User Guide for details).
NOTE: The printer maintenance kit is a consumable item and is not covered under warranty.

Installing the printer maintenance kit
The printer maintenance kit contains several parts for the printer that might wear out after extended use. Installing these parts now ensures that the printer will continue to provide the best possible print quality. There might be more parts in the kit than are necessary, depending on the model of the printer and which accessories are installed.
The printer maintenance kit is considered a consumable item, and the cost of it is not covered under the printer’s original warranty.
NOTE: Installing the printer maintenance kit requires a flat-blade screwdriver.

These components are included in the printer maintenance kit:
  1. Fuser
  2. Transfer roller
  3. Tool for removing transfer roller
  4. Tray 1 pickup roller
  5. Feed rollers
Step 1: Replacing the fuser
  1. Turn the printer off.
    WARNING: In order to avoid minor burns, wait 30 minutes for the fuser to cool before continuing with this procedure.
  2. Turn the printer around to display its rear cover.
  3. Remove the tray 2 dust cover or optional duplexer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the printer.
  5. Open the rear output bin and pull out the extension.
  6. Remove the rear output bin and extension. To do this, bend the middle down slightly, release tab 1, and then release tab 2.

  7. Release the fuser by turning the fuser levers so that they point up.

  8. Pull the fuser out of the printer. To release the fuser from the printer, hold the back of the printer while pulling on the fuser as shown below. Do not pull on the black plastic flapper.

  9. Install the new fuser, left side first. Be sure to push the fuser firmly into the printer.
  10. Lock the fuser in place by rotating the levers to the horizontal position. (The levers will lock only if the fuser is installed all the way.)
  11. Replace the rear output bin, left side first.
  12. Plug the power cord into the printer.
  13. Replace the tray 2 dust cover or the optional duplexer.
  14. Continue with step 2 to replace the transfer roller.
Step 2: Replacing the transfer roller
  1. Put on gloves.
  2. Turn the printer around to display its front.
  3. Open the printer's top cover and remove the print cartridge. The transfer roller is underneath the print cartridge.
  4. Using the plastic tool that has been provided in the kit, pry the left end of the metal shaft up. Then slide the transfer roller to the left to remove.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the black rubber part of the new transfer roller (A) with bare hands. Skin oils on the transfer roller can cause print quality problems.
  5. Install the new transfer roller by sliding the right side in place first. Then snap the left side (with the gear) into place.
    NOTE: When installing the transfer roller, make sure the black collar on the left side is oriented properly, with the open end down.
  6. Continue with step 3 to replace the tray 1 pickup roller.
Step 3: Replacing the tray 1 pickup roller
  1. With the top cover still open, open tray 1 and locate the rubber pickup roller at the center of tray 1.
  2. Pull the envelope entrance cover (or envelope feeder, if installed) straight out of the printer.

  3. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, pry open the blue latch on the pickup roller. Then lift out the pickup roller.

  4. Install the new pickup roller and snap the blue latch back into place.
    NOTE: Make sure the pin in the pickup roller lines up with the hole in the shaft. The blue latch might be difficult to snap closed. Ensure that the pickup roller is properly aligned and then push hard on the blue latch.

  5. Reinstall the envelope entrance cover.
  6. Continue with step 4 to replace the feed rollers in the paper trays.
Step 4: Replacing the feed rollers in the paper trays
Perform these steps for tray 2. Repeat the steps for tray 3 and tray 4, if they are installed. There is a feed roller inside each of these paper trays.
  1. Remove the paper tray from the printer.
  2. Open the door next to the rubber feed roller by releasing the latch and rotating the door upward.

  3. Pinch the blue latch on the left side of the feed roller and slide the feed roller off the shaft.
  4. Install the new feed roller by sliding it onto the shaft.

    NOTE: It is very important that the feed roller locks into place. If the feed roller does not lock into place, make sure the roller is properly oriented and that the round black device next to the feed roller is properly located around the pin in the shaft.
  5. Close the door by pressing until it locks into place.
    CAUTION: The door must be fully closed to avoid damage to the printer.
  6. Continue with step 5 to replace the feed rollers inside the printer.
Step 5: Replacing the feed rollers in the printer
Perform these steps for tray 2. Repeat the steps for tray 3 and tray 4, if they are installed. The feed roller for each tray is located inside the printer when the paper tray is removed.
  1. Move the front of the printer to the edge of the work area for better access to the feed roller area.
  2. Remove the paper tray from the printer.
  3. Pinch the blue latch on the left side of the feed roller and slide it off the shaft. It might be necessary to rotate the feed roller in order to pinch the latch.

  4. Slide the new feed roller onto the shaft and rotate the feed roller until it locks into place.
    NOTE: It is very important that the feed roller locks into place.
  5. Replace the paper tray.
  6. Continue with step 6 to reset the preventative maintenance page count.
Step 6: Resetting the preventative maintenance page count
When all of the previous steps are completed, reset the preventative maintenance page count. This will clear the PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCE message from the printer control panel.
To reset the preventative maintenance page count:
  1. At the printer control panel, press and hold down the left side of the Item and -Value+ buttons while turning the printer on.
  2. Release the buttons on the control panel when RESET MAINT COUNT appears in the display.
To verify that the page count has been reset
  1. At the printer control panel, press Menu until INFORMATION MENU appears.
  2. Press Item until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears.
  3. Press Select to print the configuration page. Note the pages since last maintenance.
  4. Print a copy of the printer configuration page to verify that the page count was correctly reset.
