HP Color LaserJet 4500 and 4550 Series Printers - How to Replace Consumables
Introduction
This document contains information about how to replace consumables for the printer. It is helpful to know which items need to be replaced regularly and where to locate them on the printer. This document also contains information about how to clean the printer.

The following illustration shows the clearance necessary around the printer for replacing consumables.

Consumable replacement guidelines
To facilitate consumable replacement, keep the following guidelines in mind when setting up the printer:
Sufficient space is required in the front and rear of the printer for removing consumable items
The printer should be located on a flat, sturdy surface
102 mm (4 in) of space is required on the sides of the printer to ensure proper ventilation
Instructions for selecting the print cartridge to remove via the control panel
Open and close the print cartridge cover if the printer displays Ready
.
Press the SELECT
key once to select different print cartridges.
Press the VALUE
key to choose different print cartridges.
Approximate replacement intervals for consumable items
Identify consumable items by their labeling and blue plastic handles.

The following table lists the replacement intervals for printer consumable items and the control panel messages prompts for replacing each item.

Factors affecting page yield include color versus black-only printing mix, paper size, typical job length and complexity, and automatic duplexing.

When the printer's control panel shows a drum kit low message, 20% of the drum life remains. When the control panel gives a fuser kit low or transfer kit low message, at least 5% of the life remains. |

Environmental collection program
HP encourages responsible disposal of HP LaserJet printer supplies through its Planet Partners Program. For details on this program, refer to the recycling instruction guide enclosed with each consumable item. This program may not be available in all countries.
The following consumable items can be disposed of through the Planet Partners Program:
Print cartridge
Imaging drum cartridge
Transfer belt
Fuser
Cleaning the printer
Clean excess toner from the printer
Toner from the yellow, magenta, and cyan print cartridges will accumulate on the flaps that cover the print cartridges. Although this accumulation of toner does not cause print defects, the excess toner needs to be cleaned from the flap occasionally. Clean the flap covering the print cartridge and other excess toner from the printer when replacing print cartridges. There is a toner cloth provided with each replacement print cartridge to clean the toner from the printer. For more information about cleaning the printer, refer to the instructions included with the replacement print cartridge.

Do not use the toner cleaning cloth on the drum, developer sleeves in the print cartridge, or transfer rollers. This can damage these units and cause other print quality problems.
|
If toner has built up on the print cartridge, it may fall on the transfer roller, which causes streaking on the printed media. To clean the toner from the transfer roller, print several blank pages until the streaking stops.
Clean the toner density sensor
The toner density sensor should be cleaned whenever the imaging drum is replaced or the control panel message DENSITY SENSOR OUT OF RANGE displays.

To avoid scratching the sensor, do not clean it with any paper products.

To clean the toner density sensor
Open the lower front drawer, remove the cleaning brush mounted inside, and then close the drawer.

Pull open the top front drawer.

Remove the imaging drum by the blue handle.

Use the cleaning brush to remove all dust and toner particles from the sensor, as illustrated.

Re-insert the imaging drum.

Close the upper front drawer.

Replace the cleaning brush and firmly close the lower front drawer.
