HP LaserJet Printers - Support for Font Cartridges, SIMMs, and DIMMs in Windows 95/98/NT 4.0
All HP PCL drivers have an option to install additional fonts or font DIMMs, but many of these font installers do not install Printer Cartridge Metrics (PCM) files. HP Font Solutions products like Bar Codes and More or MICR DIMM come with PCM files, so these fonts cannot be installed or accessed from all Windows printers drivers. PCMs provide printer drivers with metrics required to select SIMM or cartridge fonts for Windows applications.
How to install PCM files
Using a PostScript (R) driver
HP font DIMMs come with PCL fonts. PCL fonts are not accessible from PostScript, so they cannot be installed or accessed through any PostScript driver in any version of Windows.
Using Windows 95/98
None of the HP LaserJet 4000/4050/5000 PCL6 printer drivers support PCM files, so it is not possible to install or access HP Font Solutions products with any PCL6 driver. All of the HP LaserJet 4000/4050/5000 Windows 95/98 PCL5e printer drivers support PCM files, however, so using a PCL5e driver is required to install and access HP Font Solutions products in Win 95/98.
Windows 95/98/3.1x issues
ISSUE:
Does Windows 95 software have support for HP font cartridges, font SIMM, or font DIMM products?
SOLUTION:
Windows 95 software includes support for most of HP's Super 13 and Scalable cartridges with HP LaserJet printer drivers that are supplied with Windows 95 software. If a system has one of these cartridges, disk-based fonts SIMMs or DIMMs, select it on the font screen in the driver properties. To add support for one of the older A to Z cartridges, such as Tax 1, International Collection, and Pretty Faces, using PCMs, which may be obtained through HP Distribution, is required.
ISSUE:
How is PCM support added to Windows 95 software?
SOLUTION:
Obtain a disk that contains PCMs from HP Distribution. Then, follow these steps:
From the TaskBar, choose Start
, then Settings
, then choose PRINTERS
. The Printer
folder will appear.
Left-click the printer
icon, then choose Properties
.
From the Printer
Properties
screen, select Fonts
. There will be a list of cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs that are already supported (the Super 13 and Scalable Cartridges). Choose Install
Printer
Fonts
. This brings up the HP Font Installer. Choose Add
Fonts
.
A box will appear that defaults to the A:\ drive. Insert the disk containing the PCMs in the A drive, or change to the directory to where the PCMs are located, and choose OK
. The disk may contain separate directories: one for the A to Z cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs, one for the Super 13, and one for the Scalable cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs. Be sure to select the correct directory.
The font installer will read the PCMs and then list the cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs by name in the right screen. Highlight the cartridge, SIMM, or DIMM that you are installing support for, and choose Add
.
The font installer will indicate that it is copying font files to the C:\PCLFONTS directory. Choose OK
or change this to a different directory.
The Installer will place the name of the cartridge, SIMM, or DIMM on the left hand screen. Choose Exit
. The cartridge, SIMM, or DIMM will now appear in the list of supported cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs on the Fonts
screen. Highlight the cartridge, SIMM, or DIMM in order to select it. The fonts associated with this cartridge, SIMM, or DIMM will now appear in the Windows 95 software applications. Make sure the cartridge is inserted into the printer or that the SIMM or DIMM is installed.

NOTE:
|
PCMs are not intended for use with PostScript printer drivers. |
ISSUE:
What is the procedure for adding PCMs in Windows 95 software if the printer driver installed is a Windows software v 3.X driver?
SOLUTION:
The procedure is the same; follow the proceeding steps. The difference is that the Windows software v 3.X drivers do not contain support for any HP font cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs. Therefore, PCMs would be used to install support for the Super 13, Scalable, and A to Z cartridges, SIMMs, or DIMMs.
ISSUE:
Installation of the printer fonts on the Font DIMM using the PCM File in Windows 95 or Windows 98.

NOTE:
|
Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 do not support PCMs. |
Using Windows NT 4.0
Windows NT 4.0 does not support PCM files in any driver with any printer. In order to install the PCM, select an older HP LaserJet printer with a similar font product installed as a cartridge font.
For instance, to use a “Bar Codes and More DIMM? in an HP LaserJet 4050 printer, do the following:
Load the Windows NT LaserJet 4 printer driver (it comes with NT) via Add Printer.
Access the LaserJet 4 driver Properties.
Select Device
Settings
.
Scroll down to Installed
Font
Cartridges
heading, and select Font
Cartridge
Slot
0
.
Select HP:
Bar
Codes
and
More
from the list at the bottom of the tab, and click OK
.
When there is a need to print using one of the fonts on the Bar Codes and More DIMM, select the LaserJet 4 driver so the fonts on the DIMM will be selectable from the application font menu.
