In most circumstances, the HP Jetdirect print server should be upgraded using HP Download Manager or HP Web Jetadmin . These two programs can automatically retrieve the appropriate firmware upgrade file from the HP Web site and upgrade the print server all in one process. Downloading the firmware files separately, as described in this document, is not required. They can, however use firmware files that have been downloaded separately. Why would you want to do this?

NOTE:

Firmware for an embedded Jetdirect print server, an embedded print server, or a Jetdirect Inside print server will update when the printer firmware is updated.

One reason that you may want to download the firmware separately is if the print servers are on a network that does not have Internet access. You could, for example, download the firmware file and HP Download Manager to a laptop that has Internet access, and then take the laptop to the network where the print servers are.

The following information explains how to download HP Jetdirect firmware images to a computer which can then be used with HP Download Manager or HP Web Jetadmin. In addition, FTP or the HP Jetdirect's embedded Web server (HTTP) can be used to upgrade a print server with the downloaded firmware files. Individual firmware files are available.

NOTE:

A few HP Jetdirect models cannot be upgraded. In this document, only those HP Jetdirect print servers that can be upgraded are listed . If an HP Jetdirect model is not listed below, it is because it is not upgradable .

Using HP Download Manager version A.04.20

HP Download Manager can also automatically download a firmware image from the Web and use the image to upgrade an HP Jetdirect device with flash memory. Click here to download HP Download Manager software .

However, rather than have HP Download Manager automatically download those images, follow the instructions below to download firmware images. To use these downloaded firmware files, use HP Download Manager's "Local Mode" instead of "Internet Mode" when HP Download Manager is launched. (Be sure the download files are in the correct directory before launching the HP Download Manager.)

Save the file to the following subdirectory on the machine running the HP Download Manager version A.03.xx: :\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Download Manager\Upgrades\Jetdirect This assumes that the default directory was chosen during installation of HP Download Manager. These firmware images must be saved to the above subdirectory in order for HP Download Manager to successfully use them to upgrade HP Jetdirect firmware.

Using HP Web Jetadmin

HP Web Jetadmin includes the ability to upgrade HP Jetdirect firmware over the network. HP Web Jetadmin can automatically download a firmware image from the Web and use the image to upgrade a Jetdirect device. Click here to download HP Web Jetadmin

However, rather than have HP Web Jetadmin automatically download those images, follow the instructions below to download firmware images from the Web and place them in an HP Web Jetadmin directory.

Using FTP or the Jetdirect embedded Web server

Some HP Jetdirect models, depending on their firmware version, can be upgraded using FTP or the HP Jetdirect embedded web server; no extra software is needed.

Download the relevant firmware image file(s) below and use those instructions to upgrade the firmware.

How to download the HP Jetdirect individual firmware files

To download individual HP Jetdirect firmware images, see the instructions below.
