HP Install Network Printer Wizard 4.0 - Configuring a Printer for a Windows TCP/IP Network

The HP Install Network Printer Wizard provides interactive or automatic installation and setup of either wired or wireless network printers (and All-in-One devices). Most newer printers incorporate network configuration into the printer's CD-ROM used to install the printer driver. However the latest version of INPW can be downloaded from the HP web site and may have newer features, such as wireless print server configuration capability.
Preparation
NOTE: If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, the configuration will fail and display an error. Therefore, temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, BlackICE, or the Windows XP firewall.
Before using the Install Network Printer Wizard, print a Configuration page from the printer or external HP Jetdirect print server. Printing the Configuration page will provide useful information, including:
  • the current TCP/IP address
  • any Ready or Error messages that indicate network communication status
  • a network statistics section showing the amount and types of packets the HP Jetdirect is transmitting and receiving
If the Configuration page shows an old TCP/IP address or other old configuration settings that you do not want, restore the print server to its factory default settings (known as a cold reset).
Printing the configuration page to verify the status of the HP Jetdirect or Embedded Jetdirect Inside print server
  • Most HP printers with internal HP Jetdirect print servers can be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down the ONLINE or GO buttons while turning the printer back on. The printer control panel display should read Cold Reset or Restoring Factory Settings. If the printer has no display, the indicator lights will cycle.
  • To cold reset an HP Jetdirect external print server, unplug the power cord from the HP Jetdirect print server, then hold down the TEST button (on top of or in back of the HP Jetdirect) for five to 30 seconds while plugging in the power cord.
  • Most HP printers with embedded HP Jetdirect Inside print servercan be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down the ONLINE or GO buttons while turning the printer back on. The printer control panel display should read, Cold Reset or Restoring Factory Settings . If the printer has no display, the indicator lights will cycle. See the printer documentation for more assistance.
When the Configuration page prints, read it to verify the following:
  1. Verify the TCP/IP address. The default IP address is either 192.0.0.192 (this must be changed to a valid address for the network) or 168.254.x.x.
  2. The TCP/IP status should read, "Ready".
  3. "I/O Card Ready" should appear on the configuration page.
  4. The HP Jetdirect firmware version or revision is x.03.16 or greater.
Restoring an HP Jetdirect to factory defaults
In some cases, it may be necessary to reset an HP Jetdirect print server to factory defaults. Resetting to factory defaults should remove any previous configurations, such as an old TCP/IP address, and verify that any error messages that appear on the configuration page have not been resolved. It can also help discover the printer in the HP Install network Printer Wizard.
  • Internal HP Jetdirect cards: Most HP printers can be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down ONLINE or GO while turning the printer on. Release the button when the printer control panel display reads, COLD RESET or RESTORING FACTORY SETTINGS.
  • External HP Jetdirect print servers: Unplug the power cord from the HP Jetdirect device, then hold down the TEST button for five to 30 seconds while plugging in the power cord.
  • Embedded Jetdirect Inside print servers: The method to reset an internal embedded Jetdirect Inside print server to factory defaults (cold reset) may vary from printer-to-printer. See the printer documentation for assistance resetting the printer and the embedded Jetdirect Inside print server back to factory defaults.
  • HP Designjet plotters: Many HP Designjet plotters cannot reset an HP Jetdirect device. Telnet can be used to reset the TCP/IP settings. However, the HP Designjet 1050C, 1055CM, 500, and 800 series have a reset option in the control panel menus.
Using the Install Network Printer Wizard
NOTE: If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, the configuration will fail and display an error. Therefore, temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, BlackICE, or the Windows XP firewall.
  1. If the software is downloaded and installed, click Start , Programs , and HP Install Network Printer Wizard .
  2. When the utility runs, select Next .
  3. Select either Wired or Wireless , depending on the connection of your print server and click Next . Click here to go to the Wired section . Click here to go to the Wireless section .
Wired Setup
If you have selected Wired , follow these steps:
  1. Choose either Select from a list of detected printers or Specify a printer by address .
    • If choosing Select from a list of detected printers , wait for INPW search for printers, select one, then click Next .
    • If choosing Specify a printer by address , select and enter either the hardware address, IP address or IP hostname addresses for the desired printer. Then click Next .
  2. Choose either Configure network printer settings for me or Let me configure my own network printer settings , then click Next .
  3. If choosing Let me configure my own network printer settings , click Change Settings and change the IP address as needed, click OK , and then Next .
  4. Install the printer driver by selecting one of the following three methods and then click Next :
    • Check the HP's web site for a driver
Downloading the driver from the HP web site (for HP printers only)
    • Install a driver from a printer installation disk or driver file
Installing a driver from a printer installation disk or driver file will open a new window from which to browse for the printer driver .inf file:
    • Select a driver from a list of driver this PC knows about
Selecting a driver from a list of driver this PC knows about is much like using Window's Add Printer Wizard:
  5. After selecting how to install the driver, create a name for the printer (as seen in Window's Printers folder), then click Next :
  6. Click Install on the Summary screen.
  7. After the printer is installed, you can choose to print a test page; otherwise the installation is complete.
Wireless Setup
NOTE: If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, the configuration will fail and display an error. Therefor, temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, BlackICE, or Windows XP firewall.
If you are using a combination wired/wireless HP print server, it is recommended that you configure the print server's wireless settings using a network (LAN) cable. Although you can configure it without a network cable (i.e., using a wireless connection) it is generally easier to configure using the network (LAN) cable that is included with the print server.
  1. For a new print server that has not been configured, select First time wireless printer installation and click Next .
NOTE: By default, the wizard will install the printer on this PC. If you only want to configure wireless settings and not install the printer driver, uncheck the box next to Install the printer on this PC . If left checked (default), the wizard will install the printer on this PC after wireless connection settings have been configured.
  2. Select either Combination wireless and wired print server or Wireless only print server , then click Next
If using a combination wired/wireless HP Print server, Select the configuration method to configure the wireless settings using a network cable , then click Next .
  3. The wizard will search for the printer. Once it is found, select the printer to configure and click Next
  4. Select one of the following:
    • Select the SSID (or wireless network name) listed in the window to which the printer will join.
      or
    • Select Enter an unlisted wireless network , then click Next .
    • Select the encryption security method used on your network, then click Next . The encryption methods will also provide screens to enter either a WEP key or a pre-shared key.
      or
    • If you selected Enter an unlisted wireless network , then you can select Ad Hoc or Infrastructure mode, specify a Network Name, or associate to the wireless network with the strongest signal, then click Next to select the encryption methods above.
  5. Click Advanced to configure additional settings, such as the IP address, and/or just verify the settings shown on screen by the wizard, then click Next .
  6. If you are using a combination wired/wireless HP Print server, disconnect the network cable and click Next to continue with adding the printer driver and port to the computer.
  7. The wizard will search for the now wireless printer. This may take some time, so wait at least one minute. If, after that time, the printer is not seen, click Refresh . Once found, select it and click Next .
