HP Jetdirect Printer Installer for UNIX(R) - HPPI E.10.18, Installing a New Model Script

Information
The model scripts for the Jetdirect Printer Installer for UNIX(R) (HPPI) can be upgraded by using its menus. This directs HPPI to download model scripts from a preset URL and prompts the user for a proxy server address and port number.
However, if there is no proxy server on the network, the model scripts and associated files must be downloaded separately, and then HPPI can be used to install these files from the hard drive rather than being downloaded from the preset URL.
If you do not know if you have a proxy server, contact your network administrator.
Instructions for networks that have a proxy server
  1. Login as root and run the HP Jetdirect Printer Installer for UNIX by typing hppi
  2. Type 1 for Spooler administration .
  3. Type 4 for Install new model script.
  4. Press return to accept the default Web site from which to download the model script.
  5. Type in the proxy server name.
  6. Type in the port number for the proxy server.
  7. A list of printers and associated model scripts will be displayed. At the end of the list, type the number associated with the printer and modelscript.
The software is now able to add a printer to local spooler (using the Spooler Administration menu) with the new model script.
Instructions for networks that do not have a proxy server
You first need the printer ID of the printer for which you need a model script. Then, two files must be downloaded from HP - a configuration file (the "cfg" file) and a tar file.
NOTE: It is important to install the configuration file first, then the tar file.
  1. Log in as root or administrator on the computer where HPPI is installed.
  2. Determine the Printer ID number of the printer for which you need the model script by typing: /opt/hpnpl/bin/hpnpadmin -i ip_address_of_printer
  3. Click here to download the appropriate .tar file for the operating system . Save this file in the /opt/hpnpl/tmp directory. You may need to right-click and save as a file type of text, but be sure there is no .txt extension when you save it. Save the files in a temporary location such as /op/hpnpl/tmp or /tmp. After saving the file, check if it has a .txt extension and rename the file if necessary.
  4. Download the .cfg file from the Web. Open a browser window and type: http://www.hp.com/pond/modelscripts/267.cfg where "267 " in this example is the Printer ID number obtained in Step 1. Also save this file in the /opt/hpnpl/tmp directory.
NOTE: If you download these files to a Windows computer, be sure to ftp them to the UNIX computer in binary mode.
  5. Start the Jetdirect Printer Installer for UNIX by typing hppi at a command prompt, then type 1 for Spooler administration .
  6. Type 4 for Install new model script and type in the full path, including the filename, to the .cfg file. Example: /opt/hpnpl/tmp/267.cfg
  7. Type 4 for Install new model script again and type in the full path, including the filename, to the .tar file.
The software is now able to add a printer to local spooler (using the Spooler Administration menu) with the new model script.
