HP LaserJet 4P and 4MP Series Printers - PostScript and Memory SIMM Installation

General guidelines for handling SIMM boards
Available SIMM options
HP LaserJet 4P series printers have three SIMM slots that can be used for adding the following:
  • More printer memory.
  • An optional Adobe (TM) PostScript language SIMM, HP part number C2049-67901 (obsolete).
  • SIMM-based accessory typefaces.
  • Other SIMM-based personalities and printer options.
HP LaserJet 4MP series printers have two SIMM slots that can be used for adding the following:
  • More printer memory.
NOTE: Use HP memory SIMMs or equivalent SIMMs (36-bit or 32-bit, 72-pin; 70, 80, or 100 ns) designed for HP LaserJet 4MP series printers.
  • SIMM-based accessory typefaces.
  • SIMM-based personalities and printer options.
Order of installation
SIMM boards that have circuits on both sides fit best in the lowest slots. It is easier to install the boards starting with the lowest slot and working up. Remove the boards in reverse order.
In an HP LaserJet 4P, the SIMM slots are numbered 1 (the upper slot), 2 (the middle slot), and 3 (the lower slot).
In an HP LaserJet 4MP, the SIMM slots are numbered 1 (the upper slot) and 2 (the lower slot).
Protecting the SIMM board
CAUTION: Even very small amounts of static electricity can damage the SIMM. When handling a SIMM, follow all instructions below.
To protect the SIMM during installation, take the following precautions:
  • Wear an anti-static wrist strap, or touch the surface of the anti-static package AND any bare metal in the printer before removing the SIMM from its package.
  • To prevent generation of static electricity, avoid moving about the work area. Do not touch any other electronic devices, such as a telephone or a PC.
  • Handle the SIMM carefully at all times. Avoid flexing the board or touching its components.
Steps for installing the SIMM
Opening the printer
  1. Turn the printer off, and disconnect the power cord.
WARNING: Hazardous voltages are present in the printer. Never remove any access cover or work near exposed electrical parts while the power cord is connected.
  2. Remove the panel by pushing down on it and sliding it toward you.
  3. Look through the opening to see two SIMM board slots. Remove any SIMM memory boards if necessary. Then, install the bottom SIMM first, and the top SIMM last.
CAUTION: Touch the anti-static package and any bare metal area on the printer before removing a board from the printer or from the anti-static package. Avoid flexing the board or touching components.
Inserting the SIMM board
  1. Remove the SIMM board from the anti-static package. Hold the board with forefingers on the edges next to the holes and with a thumb against the back edge. Orient the board so the notch is on the left side.
  2. Hold the SIMM with the notch on the left.
  3. Hold the board at a 30-degree angle to the slot, and use thumbs to push the edge of the board evenly and firmly into the slot.
  4. Rotate the board down until the clips on the edges of the slot snap into place (feel and hear a click to verify).
NOTE: Do not replace the cover until following the instructions in the following section on checking the SIMM installation.
Checking the SIMM installation
NOTE: If the SIMM board is installed securely, the two side pegs on the SIMM latch will show through the two guide holes on the SIMM board.
  1. Plug in the power cord, and switch the printer on.
  2. After the non-printing self-test is complete, the
    ON LINE
    indicator should light, and
    00 READY
should appear on the display. If a different printer message appears, see the next section, "Troubleshooting the SIMM Board."
  3. Press
    ON LINE
    to take the printer off-line.
  4. Press
    MENU
    until
    TEST MENU
    appears on the display.
  5. Press
    ITEM
    until
    SELF TEST
    appears on the display.
  6. Press
    ENTER
to print a PCL configuration page.
  7. Press
    ON LINE
    to return the printer online.
  8. If installing additional printer memory, do the following: Locate RAM Size on the PCL configuration page. This is the amount of memory installed in the printer (The amount is shown in kilobytes. 1,024 kilobytes equals one megabyte.)
  9. If installing a printer personality (such as PostScript), do the following: Locate the Installed Personalities on the PCL configuration page. PostScript should appear directly beneath the entry for PCL. The PCL configuration page should also show a status block for the PS Menu. If the PCL configuration page does not reflect the printer's SIMM board, check to see that the SIMM is correctly installed. If the problem persists, call a dealer or an authorized HP Service Representative.
Replacing the SIMM cover
  1. Rest the SIMM cover on the ridge surrounding the SIMM opening, and push it against the printer.
  2. Slide the cover up until it snaps into position.
Troubleshooting the SIMM board
Service/ERROR messages
The messages detailed in the table below can be generated while the printer is checking its internal memory:
Error Problem Solution
61.x SERVICE This message indicates a SIMM parity error. The x indicates which SIMM slot generated the error. If x = 0, the slot with the defective SIMM could not be determined (slot 1 is the top slot). Check the HP part number to make sure it is the correct SIMM board; if it is correct, see the checking procedure for 61.x SERVICE and 62.x SERVICE described below.
62.x SERVICE This message indicates that the printer identified a problem while checking memory. If x = 0, the problem is in internal Read Only Memory (ROM).

If x = 1, 2, or 3, the problem is in SIMM Slot 1, 2, or 3 (Slot 1 is the highest slot).

If x = 4, the problem is with the accessory cartridge.
63 SERVICE The printer found a problem in its internal RAM memory. Switch the printer off then on to clear the error. If the message reappears, call an authorized HP dealer or authorized HP service representative.
Checking procedure
Follow these steps to check service messages:
  1. Switch the printer off then back on (data will be lost ).
  2. If the error message appears again, switch the printer off and unplug the power cord . Verify that the SIMM board is installed correctly (see the installation instructions above). Then, reconnect the power, and switch the printer on.
  3. If the error message appears again, switch the printer off, unplug the power cord, and remove the SIMM board(s) or the accessory cartridge. Then, reconnect the power, and switch the printer on.
  4. If the error message appears again, the problem is in printer memory. If the error message does not appear, the problem is in the SIMM board or the cartridge. Call an authorized HP dealer or service representative.
Validation error messages
Validation error messages appear when a SIMM fails to be initialized when the printer is turned on. This error is in the format, 53.XY.ZZ ERROR. Although these errors can be ignored by pressing CONTINUE , the SIMM that caused the error will not be configured.
X (Hardware Type) Y (Hardware Device) ZZ (Error Number)
0: ROM 0: Internal memory 0: Unsupported memory
1: RAM 1: SIMM Slot 1 1: Unrecognized memory
2: SIMM Slot 2 2: Unsupported memory size
3: SIMM Slot 3 3: Failed RAM test
    4: Exceeded maximum RAM size
    5: Exceeded maximum ROM size
    6: Invalid SIMM speed
    7: SIMM reporting information incorrectly
    8: SIMM RAM parity error
9: SIMM ROM needs to be mapped to an unsupported address
    10: SIMM address conflict
    11: ROM out of bounds
12: Could not make temporary mapping
