HP All-in-One and Fax Product Family - Interpreting Error Codes in Fax Communication Error or Fax History Reports

Introduction
A fax communication error report or fax history report might contain error codes to help you diagnose fax issues. You can find the error code definitions and solutions in the tables at the end of this document.
The following list contains some basic troubleshooting tips you can try to resolve errors. If errors occur every time a fax is sent or received, there might be larger communication issues. Click here for more help with fax communication issues (buu02151) (in English).
Check the following items:
  • Make sure that you have plugged the phone cord directly and securely into the wall jack and into the back port of the fax product. The fax port on your product is marked "Line," "To Wall Jack," or with a wall jack symbol.
  • Make sure the Line Interface Unit (box that the phone cord plugs into) is fully seated into the back of the fax product.
  • Remove any other devices from the line such as splitters, credit card machines, or telephone answering machines.
  • Try sending and receiving faxes on a different fax line.
  • Try using a different telephone cord.
  • Have the phone company test your line for static or noise problems.
  • Turn Error Correction Mode (ECM) off, if you encounter the same error repeatedly. Click this link HP All-in-One and Fax Products for more information on enabling or disabling ECM.
NOTE: Error codes that apply specifically to ECM have ECM listed next to them.

Interpreting fax receive error codes
The following tables contain the fax receive error codes. An error code can have more than one definition (cause), and more than one solution.

Error Code: 222
Definitions
  • The local machine answered a call, but is unable to detect the presence of a calling fax machine. Typically this is because the local fax machine answered a voice call.
  • The remote user canceled the fax transmission by pressing the Stop key immediately prior to, or just as the local machine answered the call.
  • The receiving fax machine is an older silent fax machine. Try turning on Silent Detect in the Fax settings.
  • The remote machine automatically ended the call immediately before, or just as the local machine answered the call.
  • The remote (calling) fax machine determined that there was a feature incompatibility between the two machines. The remote machine disconnected immediately before sending any further fax tones or T.30 frames. This situation occurs rarely.

  • A communication failure occurred between the two machines.
  • The user at the remote machine might have pressed the Stop key.
  • The call waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line. Do not use call waiting on a line with a fax machine.
  • The power at the remote machine was interrupted, or deliberately turned off causing the fax session to be interrupted.

Error Code: 243, 244

  • The user of the remote machine pressed the Stop key, causing the session to be prematurely terminated.
  • The remote fax machine determined that there was a feature incompatibility between the two machines and terminated the session. For example, the local machine wanted to initiate polling, but the remote machine did not support this mode of operation.

Error Code: 245 ECM, 246 ECM
Definitions
  • The user of the remote machine pressed the Stop key, causing the session to be prematurely terminated.
  • The call-waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line.
  • The local machine held the remote machine during reception of a large or complex document due to lack of available memory. This hold time exceeded the timeout (typically 60 seconds) used by the remote machine, and it terminated the session.

  • The remote machine failed to respond to a fax command from the local machine because the connection was interrupted. These errors can occur if the phone lines in the area to be faxed are old or there is noise (static on the phone line). Other reasons can include power outages and other power-related problems.
  • The call-waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line.
  • The remote user pressed the Stop key while the reception was in progress.
  • Under rare conditions, incompatibility between the two machines might cause the remote machine to abandon the call.

  • The remote user pressed the Stop key, causing the session to be terminated.
  • The remote machine encountered a system problem such as no paper or a paper jam. This prevented the fax from receiving any more pages, and caused it to terminate the session prematurely.
  • The call-waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line.
  • The remote machine encountered an incompatible feature causing it to terminate the session.
