During the installation of Oracle 10 5/08 or Oracle Solaris 10 5/09, certain HP ProLiant servers listed in the scope section that are configured with a 6-Core Intel Xeon 7400 series processor or 6-Core Intel Xeon 5600 series processor either of the following may occur:

  • Server will panic and then reboot continuously at the copyright banner screen after several of the warning messages below are displayed.
  • Server will continue with the installation after several of the messages below are displayed.

SCOPE

Any of the following HP ProLiant servers attempting an installation of Oracle Solaris 10 5/08 or Oracle Solaris 10 5/09:

An HP ProLiant DL580 G5 server or HP ProLiant BL680c G5 server blade with any of the following 6-core Intel Xeon E7450 series processors.

  • E7458 2.40GHz 6core 90W
  • E7450 2.40GHz 6core 90W

OR

HP ProLiant ML370 G6 server, HP ProLiant DL370 G6 server, HP ProLiant DL380 G6 server, HP ProLiant DL360 G6 server, HP ProLiant DL320 G6 server, HP ProLiant BL2x220c G6 server blade, HP ProLiant BL280c G6 server blade, HP ProLiant BL460c G6 server blade, or HP ProLiant BL490c G6 server blade with any of the following 6-core Intel Xeon 5600 series processors:

  • X5670 2.93GHz 6core 95w
  • X5660 2.80GHz 6core 95w
  • X5650 2.66GHz 6core 95w
  • L5640 2.26GHz 6core 60w

Note: This is not ProLiant server-specific.

RESOLUTION

This does not occur during the installation of Oracle Solaris 10 5/10.

During the installation of Oracle Solaris 10 5/08 or Oracle Solaris 10 5/09, perform the following to prevent the system panic and continuous reboot condition:

  1. Reboot the server. At the GRUB boot manager screen, press the "e" key for edit mode (at the first line at the top listed as "Solaris.")
  2. Select the kernel string and edit by adding -kd.
  3. Press the "b" key to boot.
  4. At the kernel debugger screen, enter cmi_no_init/W1.
  5. Proceed using :c command and press the <ENTER> key.
  6. After the OS installation, repeat the above steps and boot the server.
  7. Add the following line to /etc/system file
    set cmi_no_init=1
  8. Reboot with the reboot option.
