DESCRIPTION
While attempting an installation of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 x86 Service Pack (SP) 3 (or earlier) on a ProLiant server configured with 16 processor cores, after the first server reboot, the server will stop responding. No messages are displayed when this occurs.
Note
: This is not ProLiant server-specific.
RESOLUTION
To boot to the operating system for the first time, boot with kernel parameter "maxcpus=8." Add the "maxcpus=8" parameter to the /boot/grub.conf file to allow the kernel parameter setting to be applied when booting the server later.
To enable all 16 processor cores, obtain a new kernel from SUSE.
This does not occur with SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10.
