HP Color LaserJet 5500 and 5550 Series Printers - Paper and Print Media Specifications

Introduction
For optimum printing results, use conventional 75 g/m2 to 90 g/m2 (20 to 24 lb) photocopy paper. Verify that the paper is of good quality and that it is free of cuts, nicks, tears, spots, loose particles, dust, wrinkles, curls, or bent edges.
Normally, paper is loaded long-side first into the printer. This is the preferred orientation because it allows for longer consumable life and increased printer speed. However, some paper sizes can be loaded short-side first. This orientation is called rotated. Paper that can be fed into the printer using the rotated, short-side first orientation have “-R? after the paper size. These paper sizes are: Letter-R, A4-R, A5-R, and B5-R.

Paper/print media Dimensions Weight or thickness Capacity
Standard size paper Letter/A4, A3, Legal, Executive, JIS B5, A5, 11 x 17 60 to 120 g/m2 (16 to 32 lb bond)
* The printer automatically prints on paper weights up to 163 gm2 . However, automatic two-sided (duplex) printing on weights above the maximum value noted in this table can produce unexpected results.
NOTE: Automatic two-sided (duplex) printing does not support rotated (short-edge first) orientation.
Manual two-sided (duplex) printing
Some printer models do not support automatic two-sided (duplex) printing. However, it is possible to print on both sides of a page using manual two-sided printing. Any of the supported paper sizes listed for printing from Tray 1 can be used for two-sided printing. To manually print on both sides, use the instructions below:
  1. Print all of the even-numbered pages first. (Many software applications have an option to print only odd or even pages.)
  2. Remove the printed pages from the printer. If the print job has an odd number of pages, add a blank piece of paper to the bottom of the stack.
  3. In the software application or in the printer driver, select Manual Feed as the paper source.
  4. In the printer driver, select the option to Manually Print on 2nd Side .
    • In PCL drivers, this option is found on the Finishing tab under Print Quality Details .
    • In the PostScript(R) driver, this option is found in the Document Defaults section under the Advanced settings.
  5. In the software application, select the option to print all the odd-numbered pages, and click Print . When the printer’s control panel displays MANUALLY FEED, insert the stack of paper into Tray 1 in one of the following orientations.
    • For portrait orientation with long-edge (book) binding, place the stack with the previously printed side facing up and the top edge of the pages feeding into the printer first.
    • For portrait orientation with short-edge (calendar) binding, place the stack with the previously printed side facing up and the bottom edge of the pages feeding into the printer first.
    • For landscape orientation with long-edge (calendar) binding, place the stack with the previously printed side facing up and the top edge of the pages to the left, facing the printer.
    • For landscape orientation with short-edge (book) binding, place the stack with the previously printed side facing up and the top edge of the pages to the right, facing the printer.
