Introduction

This document provides information on the following topics for the HP Deskjet 5550 and 5551 printers:

Replacing print cartridges.
Calibrating print cartridges.
Checking the ink level.

Print cartridge part numbers

Use the table below to identify the correct ink cartridge part number:

Ink cartridge	Part number
Black	HP 56 (C6656A)
Tri-color	HP 57 (C6657A)
Photo	HP 58 (C6658A)

Replacing the ink cartridges

A print cartridge may need replacing when:

Print quality issues cannot be resolved by cleaning the print cartridges.
A front-panel display message indicates a print cartridge needs to be replaced.
Low ink level.

Follow the instructions below to replace the ink cartridges:

Step	Example
1. Press the POWER button to turn on the printer.
5. Remove the replacement print cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the plastic tape. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strip is on the bottom.
6. Slide the print cartridge firmly into the cradle. Ensure that the copper contacts of the print cartridge meet the copper contacts of the print cartridge cradle as shown.
7. Close the cradle latch.	Pull the latch forward.
8. Verify white paper is loaded in the printer, then close the top cover. The printer automatically prints a calibration page for optimum print quality.

Calibrating the print cartridges

The printer does an automatic calibration whenever a new print cartridge is installed. The printer should be calibrated, however, whenever misalignment is noticed.

Follow the instructions below to calibrate the printer:

Step	Instruction
1.	Double-click the Printer Assistant icon on your desktop.
2.	Select Tools and Updates , Printer Maintenance , then Calibrate Printer to open the Calibrate Printer window.
3.	Click Calibrate , the calibration page will print.

Calibrating the print cartridges using the Toolbox

Step	Instructions
1.	Right-click the taskbar printer icon.
2.	Click Open HP Deskjet 5550 Series Toolbox .
3.	Select the Device Services tab.
4.	Click Calibrate the Device .

Checking the ink level

Step	Instructions
1.	Right-click the taskbar printer icon.
2.	Click Open HP Deskjet 5550 Series Toolbox .
3.	Select the Estimated Ink Level tab.
