HP Color Inkjet Printer cp1700 - Downloading and Installing the Printer Driver for a Parallel or USB Connection in Microsoft Windows XP


Introduction
An HP written "add printer" or "lite" printer driver for Microsoft Windows XP is available for download from the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com. The "add printer" driver does not have an installer shell, bidirectional communication, a program group, or any desktop shortcut icons. To ensure a successful installation, be sure that the following conditions have been met before beginning installation of the printer driver software:
  • Ensure that the printheads and ink cartridges are installed, paper is loaded in the printer, and the printer is turned on and ready to print.
  • Make sure the interface cable is not connected to the computer.
    NOTE: Do not install the printer software during the installation of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Downloading the printer driver and extracting the printer driver files
Instructions are provided below for downloading the printer driver:
  1. Right-click Start on the taskbar and select Explore .
  2. Select the C: drive under All Folders , and then select File , New , and Folder . Type CP1700 and press Enter. The CP1700 folder should now appear in the right side of the Windows Explorer window.
  3. Navigate the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com to the cp1700 driver download page. Select the language and operating system to be downloaded. Click here to go to the HP cp1700 download page .
  4. On the Drivers and Downloads Web page, click the link of the desired printer driver.
  5. Click Download Now .
  6. Select the Save this program to disk option in the File Download window and click OK .
  7. When prompted for the save location, ensure that the C:\CP1700 directory is selected. Note the name of the file being downloaded.
  8. Right-click Start on the taskbar and select Explore .
  9. Select the C:\CP1700 folder. Double-click the filename for the downloaded driver to extract the driver files. The extraction process will start automatically and a new window will appear.
  10. In the new window, click Tools , Folder Options , and then View . Make sure there is a check mark in the Display the full path in the address bar box. Right-click the address and then select Copy . See Figure 1.

Installing the printer driver for a parallel connection
Follow the instructions below to install the printer driver.
  1. After the driver is downloaded, close all unnecessary programs that are running on the computer by following the instructions below:
    1. Right-click any program appearing on the taskbar next to the Start button, and select Close .
    2. Repeat the step above until all the programs appearing in the taskbar are closed.
    3. On the keyboard, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, and select Task Manager .
    4. Select the Applications tab and End Task on each item listed.
  2. Click Start , Control Panel and then Printers and Faxes .
  3. Double-click Add a Printer .
  4. Click Next in the Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard window.
  5. Select the appropriate port in the Local or Network screen. Make sure the check mark is removed from the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer box, and then click Next . See Figure 2.

  6. Select the appropriate port in the Select a Printer Port screen, usually LPT1, and then click Next .
  7. In the Install Printer Software screen, select Have Disk . See Figure 3.

  8. In the Install from Disk screen, right-click in the Copy Manufacturer's files from box and click Paste and then click Next . See Figure 4.

  9. In the Install Printer Software screen make sure the CP1700 is listed and then click Next to finish the installation.
Installing the printer driver for a USB connection
  1. After the driver is downloaded, close all unnecessary programs that are running on the computer by following the instructions below:
    1. Right-click any program appearing on the taskbar next to the Start button, and select Close .
    2. Repeat the step above until all the programs appearing in the taskbar are closed.
    3. On the keyboard, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, and select Task Manager .
    4. Select the Applications tab and End Task on each item listed.
  2. Plug the interface cable from the printer into the computer.
  3. A Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box will appear.
  4. Click Next .
  5. If the message Cannot communicate with printer appears, follow the steps below; otherwise continue with Step 6.
    1. Press and hold down the Alt key and then press the Tab key on the keyboard.
    2. Press Finish in the Found new Hardware window.
    3. The Found new Hardware will appear again, press Cancel .
    4. Press Next in the Cannot communicate with printer window and the installation will continue.
  6. Select Install from a list or a specific location and then click Next .
  7. Deselect Search removable media .
  8. Select Search for the best driver in these locations .
  9. Select Include this location in this search:
  10. Select Browse , and then right-click in the browse location and select Copy to paste the path to the driver files.
  11. Click OK and then click Next .
  12. If the files do not copy or the installation appears to freeze, follow the steps below; otherwise continue with Step 13.
    1. Simultaneously press Ctrl , Alt , and Delete on the keyboard.
    2. Select Task Manager .
    3. Select the Processes tab.
    4. Highlight SCRUB2K.EXE .
    5. Click End Task or End Process .
    6. Close the Windows Task Manager and the installation should proceed.
  13. Windows will now install the driver files.
  14. In the Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard window, click Finish .
