HP iPAQ Pocket PCs - Creating Dummy GPRS Connection
Information
On all HP iPAQ Pocket PC models that support the Phone feature, when a new Microsoft Internet Explorer window is opened, a connection via GPRS is initiated (provided the SIM card supports GPRS). Only if the connection is unsuccessful does the Pocket PC use the existing Wi-Fi connection, or any other means of connection to the Internet. This leads to unnecessary GPRS usage.
Consequently, there is a need to create a dummy GPRS connection (which does not get authenticated) so the customer is not billed for un-warranted/unnecessary GPRS usage.
This document helps in creating a dummy GPRS connection on all HP iPAQ handhelds that support the phone feature.

NOTE:
|
The illustrations included in the following procedure show an HP iPAQ rw6828 Pocket PC. However, the screen resembles all HP iPAQ Convergence Models (including the PPC 2003 and PPC 2003SE). |
Tap Start
, and then tap Settings
.
Tap Connections
, and then tap Connections
.
Tap Add a new modem connection
.
Type Dummy_GPRS
under Enter a name for the connection
. Then select Cellular Line (GPRS)
under Select a modem
. Then tap Next
.
On the next screen, leave all the fields blank, and tap Next
.
On the next screen, leave all the fields blank, and tap Finish
.
Tap Manage existing connections
.
Change the option from Auto pick
to Dummy_GPRS
.
Tap OK
.
Tap X
(Close).
Perform a soft reset.
Now, every time a browser is opened on the iPAQ Pocket PC, the Dummy_GPRS
connection is initiated, and because it is a false connection, it is not authenticated, causing an alternate Internet connection (if available) to be used.
