HP Photosmart Plus All-in-One Printers (B209a, B209b, and B209c) - Installing the Printer Software on a Wireless Network
This document contains instructions to install the product in an existing
wireless network that uses an access point
, such as a router. This type of network is called an infrastructure
network. HP recommends the infrastructure type of network for wireless connection to your product. |
NOTE:

You can also use these instructions if you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection. |

Important
: Before you can install the product, your wireless network must already be set up. To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your particular access point. Click the plus sign (
) next to your operating system for more information.
Windows XP
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

You must have the following items before you install the HP product on the wireless network:

Network name:

Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web services or get product updates. |
Your wireless-capable HP printer:
Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
A USB cable
(used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now
Use an automated tool to help gather information
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor
. If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password.

Step two: Prepare for installation
Make sure the HP product, access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
Exit all applications running on your computer.
Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the HP product.
If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.
I have already installed my HP product with a USB connection and want to switch to a wireless connection.
On the Windows taskbar, click Start
( 
), and then click Printers and Faxes
. The Printers and Faxes
folder opens. Find the icon for your HP product ( 
), and then right-click it. Click Delete
to remove the product.
Disconnect the USB cable from the product and the computer.
I have not already installed my HP product with a USB connection.
Continue to the next step to connect the HP product to the network.
Step three: Connect to the wireless network using WiFi Protected Setup

Don’t worry if you don’t have the printer CD!
You can download the most current software available for your printer from the HP website at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

To install the product on the wireless network, follow the steps for the method that you want to use (CD or download). Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the product wirelessly over the same network.

: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock

When prompted to choose a connection type, select the Network
type, not the USB type. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. (The installer prompts you when to connect and disconnect the USB cable.)

: At this point, the installer searches, but does not find the product because it is not yet connected. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the setup. Click Next
again to continue with the installation.

Method two: Download and install the software from the HP Web site

When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder

You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next

Mac OS X
Choose your operating system for steps to install the software for a wireless connection.
Important
: Set up the HP hardware before installing the software. If you have not already done so, find the hardware setup document for your product before starting the following steps.

If you have not already installed your product, follow the steps in 'Option one: Wireless installation'.
If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.
Option one: Wireless installation
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these instructions.
Step one: Prepare for installation
Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
WEP key or WPA security passphrase
A computer that is connected to the wireless network.
Internet access. HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.
Your wireless-capable HP product. Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
A USB cable (used only during installation).
Administrator privileges or password
Make sure the product, access point, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connecting to the wireless network.
Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
Exit all applications running on your computer.
Step two: Decide how to install the software
Click the plus sign (
) for information on which software installation method to use. Should I install using the software CD?
Installing with the product CD is a quick and easy method. The CD includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the CD might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. This software is current to the date of the product release.
Important
: If you try installing the product on a computer running a newer version of the operating system that released AFTER
your HP product released, the CD installation method might not work
.

Should I download and install the software from HP Software & Driver Downloads?
The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the
HP Software & Driver Downloads
page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:

Method one: Install the software with the software CD
Insert the Macintosh product CD into the CD drive of the computer.
Double-click the HP software disc icon
that displays under the Macintosh HD icon.
Double-click the HP Installer
icon.
The HP Installer
program opens.
When prompted, select your HP product, and then click OK
.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Method two: Download and install the software from the HP Web site

Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (
) next to the correct heading for additional instructions: The Select Software and Drivers
page opens.
Click the Plus sign (
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download. Click Download only
. If your browser opens a new dialog box, you might also need to click Save
or Save File
.
The file downloads to your computer, and the HP Software window opens automatically.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
When prompted to select a connection type, select Configure your device for a wireless network
, and then click Continue
.
Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the product on the wireless network.
Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection
Follow these steps to change the connection type with Bonjour.

The product software or the in-OS driver must be installed, and the product must be connected to the wireless network to change the connection type with Bonjour. |
Click the Apple menu ( 
), and then click System Preferences
. Click Print & Fax
.
In the Printers
section, click the name of your product, and then click the minus sign ( 
) to remove it. Click the plus sign ( 
). Select your product from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add
.
OS X 10.7 (Lion)
Follow these steps for OS X 10.7 (Lion).

To install the product software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP Web site or from Apple Software Updates. The product CD is not supported in Lion. |
If you have not already installed your product, follow the steps in 'Option one: Wireless installation'.
If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.
Option one: Wireless installation
If you have not previously installed the software, follow these steps to install your product on a wireless network.
Step one: Prepare for installation
To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.

Depending on your installation method, you might need to connect a USB cable to the product and the computer. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 ft) long.

Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin.
Network setup
: Before you can install the product, your wireless network must already be set up. (To set up your network, follow the instructions that came with your router or access point.)
If you set up device filtering on your access point and need to find your printer's IP or MAC address, see Additional Information
at the end of this document. Your wireless-capable HP printer
: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
Network name
: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
Password
: WEP key or WPA security passphrase.

Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connected to the network.
Exit all applications running on your computer.
Step two: Decide how to install the software
Click the plus sign (
) for information on which software installation method to use. Should I download and install the software from HP Software & Driver Downloads?
The current full-feature HP software package for your product is available on the
HP Software & Driver Downloads
page. The download includes the HP print driver, HP Utility, and HP Installer to walk you through the installation steps. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Scan software and the HP fax driver. HP recommends this installation method for all new and older products.
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:

Updated full-feature HP software might not be immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page after the public release of a new operating system. A release delay might be required for full testing and quality assurance of the final version of the operating system. If the software is not available, you can download the latest software using Apple Software Updates

Can I install the software if the printer is already connected to the network?
Adding a network-connected printer to the queue is a quick and easy software download method using Apple Software Updates.
You do not need to download a driver from the HP Software & Driver Downloads page if you use Apple Software Updates.
This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your product, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.
HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
Your wireless network uses a router that does not support WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)
The updated full-feature HP software is not immediately available on the HP Software and Drivers page after the public release of a new operating system
You updated your operating system to a version that released after your HP product released
Should I download and install the software with Apple Software Updates?
Important
: You must have a router that supports WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) to install the software with Apple Software Updates. If you do not have a WPS router, install the software using one of the other methods in this document.
Apple Software Update is a quick and easy software download method available directly through the Mac OS operating system.
You do not need to download a driver from HP Software & Driver Downloads if you install using Apple Software Update.
This download method includes the HP print driver. Depending on your printer, the download might also include HP Utility, scanning software, and the HP fax driver.

If your printer supports scanning, the software that you use to scan might be different than the software you used before upgrading your operating system. Depending on your printer driver update, you can use Preview
, Image Capture
, or the Scan
icon from the print queue to scan. |
Additionally, HP recommends that you use this installation method in the following cases:
You no longer have the software CD that shipped with your printer
The updated full-feature HP software for the new version of Mac OS is not immediately available on the HP Software & Driver Downloads page
You updated Mac OS to a new version that released after your printer released
You are doing a first time install of a new version Mac OS on a new Mac
You already installed HP software on a Mac running an earlier version of Mac OS and have updated to a new version of Mac OS
Step three: Download and install the software
The software CD that shipped with your product is not supported in Lion. Choose one of the following methods to install the software for a wireless connection. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product over the same network.

. Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original product CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads. |
Method one: Download and install the software from the HP Web site
Follow these steps to download and install the software from the HP Web site. Repeat the steps to install the software on each computer that will use the HP product wirelessly over the same network.

: The product must already be connected to the wireless network to download and install the software.
Click the Apple menu (
), and then click System Preferences
. Click Print & Scan
.
In the Printers
section, click the name of your product, and then click the minus sign (
) to remove it. Click the plus sign (
). Select your product from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add
.
Click Install
, and then click Agree
on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the product to the queue.
After the installation process completes, verify that your product displays in the queue.

on the software license agreement window to install the software and add the printer to the queue.
After the installation process completes, verify that your printer displays in the queue.
