HP Deskjet 4100 Series Printers - Setting Up the Product (Hardware)

Introduction
This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer. If you already set up the product hardware, and need software installation help, see Links to Software Installation Instructions at the end of this document.
Setup the product
Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the product software.
CAUTION: Do NOT connect the USB cable now. If you need a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
Step one: Check the contents of the box
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step two: Remove packing material

Remove all tape and protective film from the lid and from the front and back of the product.
Step three: Connect the supplied power cord and adapter

  1. Plug the power adapter into the back of the product.
  2. Plug the power cord into the power adapter.
  3. Plug the remaining end of the power cord into a grounded wall outlet.
Step four: Turn the product on

Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on. The Power button glows green when the product is on.
Step five: Load plain paper
  1. Raise the tray.

  2. Slide the paper guide all the way to the left.

  3. Place a small stack of plain paper in the tray, and then push the paper into the product until it stops.

  4. Slide the paper guide firmly against the edge of the paper stack.
  5. Lower the output tray.

  6. Extend the output tray extension.

Step six: Install the cartridges
  1. Open the cover.

  2. Wait until the carriage moves to the right side of the product, and then is idle and quiet.
  3. Remove the cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the plastic tape. Hold the cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the product.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. The strips are required electrical contacts.
  4. Slide the cartridge into the cradle, holding it at a slight upward angle, until the cartridge snaps into place.

  5. Close the cover. The product automatically prints a calibration page.

After you complete the previous setup steps, you can install the product software with the product CD or by downloading the software from the HP Web site. For instructions, click the link for your computer operating system and type of connection.
CAUTION: Do NOT connect a USB cable now. You will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
