HP Deskjet 6500 Series Printer - Printer Driver Setting Definitions
Introduction
Printing with the HP Deskjet 6500 series printer is controlled by the driver software that was installed during the printer driver installation. Changes to the printer properties can be set and changed in the Print Properties. The methods of accessing the Properties will differ, depending on the software program being used. One of the following methods will open the Printer Properties.
Click File

The driver settings are explained below.
Printing shortcuts

The first box on the Printing Shortcuts tab is What do you want to do?
Select from General everyday printing, Photo printing-borderless, Photo printing-with white borders, Two-sided, duplex printing, Presentation printing, Fast/economical printing, Postcard printing
or Custom print settings
.
The appropriate settings are automatically made by choosing one of the options in What do you want to do?

If desired, make manual selections to the settings described in the table below. The settings that are available depend on which setting is selected in the What do you want to do?
box.

Click the HP Digital Photography

Select from the six options above to enhance the quality of digital photos. In most applications, the default settings will provide the best digital print.

Paper/Quality

The first box on the Paper/Quality tab is Print Tasks Quick Sets
. Select from the following settings: Default print settings, 2 pages printed on one sheet, Automatic two-sided printing - main tray, Borderless photo - 4 x 6 inches, Borderless photo - 8.5 x 11 inches, Draft text or text with color printing, Economical 4 x 6 inches photo, HP Everyday Photo Paper, Professional text or text with color printing, Professional photo-quality printing, or No. 10 envelope.
The appropriate settings are automatically selected when an option is selected in the Print Tasks Quick Sets box.
Add new Quick Sets by performing the following steps:
Type a new Quick Sets description in the Print Tasks Quick Sets box.
Choose the appropriate paper size in the Size is: menu.
Choose the appropriate paper source in the Source is: menu.
Choose the appropriate paper type in the Type Is: menu.
Choose the appropriate Print Quality.
Click Save
to save the new Quick Set.
To delete a Quick Set, select the desired Quick Set and click Delete
. Click the HP Digital Photography
button to open the HP Digital Photography Options window.
Click the Printing help
button to open the HP Deskjet 6500 Help file.
Setting a custom paper size

Click the Custom
button under the Size Is: box in the Paper/Quality tab to set a custom paper size.
To define a custom paper size, do the following:
Click the Custom
button. The Custom paper size box opens.
In the Name drop-down list, select a paper size name.
Select the unit of measure, Inches
or Millimeters
.
Type the proper dimensions in the Width and Length boxes. The minimum and maximum paper dimensions appear beneath each box.
Click Save
to save the custom paper size.
Click OK
to exit from the Custom Paper Size box.

You can also select, add, or delete Print Task Quick Sets
from the Finishing tab.

Some options may appear dimmed and are available only when a corresponding setting is selected. For example, selecting two or more from the Pages Per Sheet option causes the Print Page Borders and Page Order Is: options to become available. |

Prints an image across a selected number of sheets of paper. For example, 2 x 2 printing uses four sheets of paper.

Effects

Select, add, or delete Print Task Quick Sets from the Effects tab.
The following settings in the Effects tab allow for easy resizing when printing documents or images:
In the Resizing Options box, select Print Document On
to choose a different paper size.
Select Scale to Fit
after selecting a paper size. This setting resizes the document or image to fit on the selected paper size.
Instead of selecting Print Document On, select % of Normal Size
to select a custom size. Either type in a desired percentage, or move the slider bar until the desired percentage is shown.
Watermarks can also be added to the document or image in the Effects tab.
In the Watermarks box, choose from Confidential
, Do Not Copy
, Draft
, For Your Eyes Only
, or Top Secret
.
Select First Page Only
to print the watermark on the first page only.
Add new watermarks by performing the following procedure:
In the Watermarks box, click Edit
.
After the Watermark Details window opens, click New
in the Current Watermarks box.
In the Watermark Message box, delete Untitled #1 (named by default), and type in a new watermark message.
Choose the Message Angle. Select either Diagonal
, Horizontal
, or Angle
.
If Angle is selected, use the Up Arrow
and Down Arrow
buttons to choose the desired angle. The default angle setting is 45 degrees.
In the Font Attributes box, choose the desired font Name, Color, Shading, Size, and Style for the new watermark.
Click OK
to save the new watermark.

Basics

In the Basics tab, you can select, add, or delete Print Task Quick Sets
, as well as make changes to Orientation, Page Order, and Copy Count.
You can also make manual selections to the settings described in the following table:

Check this box if the computer does not have enough memory/disk space to print the requested print job. |

In the Color tab, you can select, add, or delete Print Task Quick Sets
, as well as make changes to Color options.
To print in grayscale, click Print in grayscale
, then select High quality
or Black print cartridge only
.

button to open the Advanced color settings window.

Use the above options to adjust how colors appear in printed photos.
Use Saturation, Brightness
, and Color tone
to affect how overall colors are printed.
Adjust the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black sliders to specify the level of each color that is used in printing.
Click OK
to save the adjustments and to return to the Color tab.
Color management
Color management defines the range of colors that can be printed. The printer software translates the colors of an image from the current color settings to the color management option that is selected.
On the Color tab, select one of the following options in the Color management drop-down list:
ColorSmart/sRGB
: Common standard color space, appropriate for most print jobs. Used for most Web-based documents and current imaging devices.
AdobeRGB
: When using AdobeRGB to print from a professional software program, turn off the color management program and allow the printer software to manage the color space. Use the AdobeRGB setting for images that were originally created in the AdobeRGB color space.
Managed by application
: Use this option to allow the program from which you are printing to manage the color of the photo.

If you are experiencing print quality issues or problems with the printer, click the Service this device
button to open the HP Deskjet 6500 Series Toolbox.
Another way to open the HP Deskjet 6500 Series Toolbox, is by right-clicking the HP 6500 Series Printer
icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, then clicking Toolbox
.

| Clean the Print Cartridges |
Perform a print cartridge cleaning when print quality has decreased noticeably or when recommended by the troubleshooting instructions. |
| Print a Test Page |
Print a test page to verify that the printer is working correctly. |
Estimated ink level

The Estimated Ink Level tab shows a graphic estimate of how much ink is left in the black and tri-color print cartridges. This is an estimate only, the actual ink levels may vary.

NOTE:

When using refilled print cartridges, the Estimated Ink level and the Printer Status Window may indicate that the print cartridge is out of ink. Either continue to use the print cartridge until print quality degrades, or replace the print cartridge with a new HP print cartridge. |
Click Print Cartridge Ordering Information
to open the Print Cartridge Ordering Information window.

Click Order Online
to order print cartridge replacements from HP.
Click Print Page
to print a page with the print cartridge reorder information on it.
Configuration

Use the Configuration tab to manually enable accessories, select which messages to display, and set Performance options.
Click Configure Status Messages
to open the status message window.
