HP LaserJet 4345/M4345 Multifunction Printer Series - Manual Sensor Test
Information
This documentation is not to provide a solution to a specific 13.XX.YY Paper Jam error message. Its purpose is to guide through a precise troubleshooting method which will guide to the root cause of the jam. For more information, please review the 'Theory of Operation' which is located in the service manual.
It is strongly recommended to search in SAW, Tech Web and the service manual for the specific numerical error message and if it is not found, then use this document.
Photosensors are used to detect paper in the paper path. It consists of an infrared LED on one side and a light detector on the other. A "flag" blocks the LED light path between the emitter and the LED detector. When paper moves along the paper path, the flag is "tripped", the light beam is sensed by the LED, the photosensor then send a signal to the DC controller that the paper has either passed this location successfully or stopped (causing a jam).

What is a paper jam?
A paper jam is basically the result of a Photosensor not getting tripped within a specified timeframe.
DC controllers role:
The DC controller is in charge of checking and receiving the status of the Photosensor and relaying the information to the formatter. Under the “Cause of Paper Jams?, the 7 most causes of paper jams will be seen.
Cause of paper jams:
Paper jams may occur due to 7 reasons:
A Photosensor did not get tripped within a specified timeframe.
A Photosensor is tripped when it should not be.
A damaged Photosensor.
A damaged cable which goes from the DC controller to the Photosensor.
DOA DC Controller.
When there is media inside the product.
Media not being within the specifications.

Troubleshooting:
What is the numerical error message?
Is the leading edge of the page damaged? Describe its status of the leading edge.
Does the issue happen when printing simplex, duplex or both?
Does the media always stop in the same location? Where is the location?
Are the paper jams intermittent?
When did the jams begin to happen?
Have there been any changes with the MFP or its environment?
Check the entire paper path and verify there is no media in the paper path.
Try to print a configuration page, menu map, event Log, usage page, and supply status page using Tray 1. If the page jams, try to get the event log via the EWS.

Perform a paper path sensor. After selecting this option click ignore and print a configuration page. Gather the results. LaserJet 4345 MFP:
Select: "Menu", "Diagnostics", "Paper Path Sensors".
LaserJet M4345 MFP:
Select: "Administration", "Troubleshooting", "Paper Path Sensors".
Verify the media is within specifications.
Try with a new ream of paper.
Verify under paper handling that all trays are set to the exact type and size of paper they have installed.
Perform a paper path test from all the trays. Set the number of copies to 10. Verify the jam location is always in the same location. LaserJet 4345 MFP:
Select: "Menu", "Diagnostics", "Paper Test".
LaserJet M4345 MFP:
Select: "Administration", "Troubleshooting", "Paper Pat Test".
Perform a manual sensor test with and without the jam. Verify the sensors are functioning properly.
