HP LaserJet Pro M1210 Multifunction Printer Series - Troubleshooting Fax Issues
Issue
Faxing capabilities on the product do not work.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

For best troubleshooting results, make sure the line from the product plugs directly into the wall telephone jack. Disconnect other devices that connect to the product. |
Solution one: Update the firmware
Follow these steps to update the product firmware.
Step one: Print a configuration page
According to your product model listed below, follow the steps to print a configuration page.
M1130 Models
On the control panel, press and hold the Cancel ( 
) button until
the Ready ( 
) light starts blinking, and then release the button.
The product prints a configuration page.
On the control panel, press the Setup ( 
) button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the Reports
menu, and
then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the Config report
option,
and then press the OK
button.
Step two: Compare firmware versions
Follow these steps to download, save, and then install the firmware update.
Turn the product on.
Go to the Select Software and Drivers page:
-
If prompted, type your product number. You might also need to click it in a list of similar products.
Click your operating system.
The Select Software and Drivers
page opens.
In the Firmware
section, find the Version
field.
Click Firmware Update
.
Click Download only
.
Click Run
, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware.
Step three: Try to send a fax
Try to send a fax.
If these steps resolved the issue
, and the fax sends successfully
, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists
, continue with the next solution.
Solution two: Check the fax line port connection
Follow these steps to check the fax line port connection.
Step one: Check the fax line port connection
Make sure that the telephone cord connects directly from the wall telephone jack to the fax line port
on the back of the product.

The product has two
fax ports:
: The line port
, which connects the product directly to the wall telephone jack.

: The telephone port
, which connects additional devices to the product such as an answering machine or modem.

If the fax lines are connected correctly, continue to Solution three: Check the telephone line.
Step two: Try to send a fax
If you made any adjustments to the product fax lines, try to send a fax.
If these steps resolved the issue
, and the fax sends successfully

Solution three: Check the telephone line
Follow these steps to check the telephone line.
Unplug the telephone cord from the back of the product.
Plug the telephone cord into a telephone.
Listen for a dial tone.
If these steps resolved the issue
, and the fax sends successfully
, stop troubleshooting.
If the issue persists
, see the next solution.
Solution four: Run the HP Fax Setup Wizard
Follow these steps to run the HP Fax Wizard and send a fax.
Step one: Run the HP Fax Setup Wizard
Follow these steps to run the HP Fax Setup Wizard
Open the HP Fax Setup Wizard to make sure that the product is configured correctly.
Windows XP: On the Windows taskbar, click Start
, click All Programs
, click HP
, click the name of the product, and then click HP Fax Setup Wizard
.
Windows Vista and Windows 7: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( 
), click All Programs
, click HP
, click the name of the product, and then click HP Fax Setup Wizard
.
Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the fax.
Step two: Try to send a fax
Try to send a fax.
If these steps resolved the issue

Solution five: Check for an analog fax line
Follow these steps to check for an analog fax line.
Step one: Consult your telephone and Internet service provider
HP products support faxing on an analog telephone line. Follow the steps in the section that corresponds to your telephone and Internet services.
ISDN or digital PBX telephone services
Contact your service provider to configure an analog fax line.
VOIP telephone service
Contact your Internet service provider to make sure faxing is supported.

With some companies, an adapter might be necessary. |
Contact your VOIP provider for recommended fax modem speed.
Press the Setup
button ( 
).
Select Fax setup
, and then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the All faxes
menu, and then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the Fax Speed
menu, and then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the speed suggested by your VOIP provider, and then press the OK
button.
DSL Internet service
If your telephone line is bundled with DSL Internet service, a high-pass filter is required on the telephone line your product uses. Contact the DSL service provider, or buy a DSL filter if you do not have one.

If you have a high-pass filter installed, try another filter. High-pass filters can be defective. |
Step two: Try to send a fax
After you have determined the correct setup for your analog fax line from your service provider, try to send a fax.
If these steps resolved the issue
, and the fax sends successfully
, stop troubleshooting.

Solution six: Resolve error messages that appear on the display
If a specific error message displays on the control panel, go to
Fax Error Messages
(c01998628) (in English), and then search for your error message.
Solution seven: Resolve issues when receiving faxes
If you can send, but cannot receive faxes, change the following settings.
Step one: Change the Error Correction Mode (ECM) Setting
On the control panel, press the Setup 
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the Fax setup
menu, and then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the All faxes
menu, and then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the Error correction
menu, and then press the OK
button.
Use the arrow buttons to select the On
or Off
option, and then press the OK
button to save the selection.

Solution eight: Resolve issues when sending faxes
If you can receive, but cannot send faxes, change the following settings:
