Blinking lights
The lights on the front of the HP product can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The lights indicate product status and are useful for diagnosing printing
problems.

Issue: The Power light blinks
In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:

How do I resolve this issue?
The following sections describe the most common messages that might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Resume light. To resolve the issue

An 'Out of paper
' message displays on the computer
The Resume light blinks and an 'Out of paper
' message displays on the computer.
Cause
: The product is out of paper.
Solution
Follow these steps to load paper in the product.
Raise the output tray.

Slide the paper width guides to their outermost positions.
Insert a stack of paper (print-side down) into the tray, and then push the stack forward in the tray until it stops.
Slide the paper width guides inward to rest against the edge of the paper.

A 'Print cartridge missing

Cause
: One or both of the cartridges is missing, or the cartridges do not have full electrical contact with the product.

Solution one: Remove, inspect, and reinsert the cartridges
The cartridge might not have full electrical contact with the product. Removing and reinserting the cartridge might help. Follow these steps to remove and reinsert the cartridges.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product, if it is not already turned on.
Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.

Follow these steps to clean the cartridge contacts.

Clean the contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside of the product for more than 30 minutes. If the cartridge is outside of the product for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles. |
Gather the following materials:
Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the cartridge.
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

You must disconnect the power cord before cleaning the electrical contacts inside the product to avoid electrical shock. |
Press down lightly on top of the cartridge latch, and then pull up the latch to unhook it.

Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
Use the damp swab to clean the contacts on the cartridge.

Lightly moisten another swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from
the swab.
Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the product. Allow the contacts to dry for approximately 10 minutes, or use a new swab to dry the contacts.
Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot.

: The product has a paper jam.

Solution one: Turn the printer off and on again
Follow these steps to turn the product off and then on again.
Step one: Turn the printer off and on again
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn off the product. If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.
Wait 60 seconds.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn the product on.

NOTE:

The product might go through a warm-up period which might last up to two minutes. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue. |
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
Load plain white paper in the input tray.
Press and hold the Print Cancel button ( 
). The self-test report prints.
If these steps resolved the issue

Solution two: Clear the paper jam
Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper from the product. Always clear jammed paper from the back of the product first, and then from the front.
Step one: Remove any loose paper from the tray
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the
print mechanism. |
Step two: Clear a paper jam from the rear of the printer
Choose from the following three methods to check for and clear any jammed paper from the rear of the product.
Method one: Clear the jam through the rear access door
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Make sure that unused, plain white paper is loaded in the product.
Press and hold the Power button (

Release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints.
On the diagnostic page, look at the bars for the tri-color cartridge and the black cartridge (in the middle of the page) to determine the ink levels.
The "E" (for "empty") and the "F" (for "full") at each end of the ink level bars represents the level of ink in the cartridges. As ink is used, the solid color changes to a faded color.

If one or both cartridges are low on ink, consider replacing the cartridges. Continue to the next step to replace the cartridges.

If the cartridges are not compatible
with your product, continue to Solution two to replace the cartridges.
Solution one: Clean the cartridge contacts
Follow these steps to clean the contacts on the problem cartridge.

Clean the contacts quickly so that the print cartridge is not outside of the product for more than 30 minutes. If the cartridge is outside of the product for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles. |
Gather the following materials:
Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the cartridge.
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

You must disconnect the power cord before cleaning the electrical contacts inside the product to avoid electrical shock. |
Press down lightly on top of the cartridge latch, and then pull up the latch to unhook it.

Slide the cartridge out of its slot.

Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and
clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside
the product for more than 30 minutes. |
Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
Use the damp swab to clean the contacts on the cartridge.

Do not clean the ink nozzles on the cartridge. |

Lightly moisten another swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from
the swab.
Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the product. Allow the contacts to dry for approximately 10 minutes, or use a new swab to dry the contacts.
Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot.

Press down on the cartridge latch to close it. Make sure it snaps into place.

Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
If these steps resolved the issue
, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists
, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Replace the cartridge
Follow these steps to replace the problem cartridge.
Click the Play button ( 
) to view an animation on how to replace the cartridges.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.

Carefully pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape on the cartridge.

Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.

Issue: One or both of the Print Cartridge status lights blink when trying to print a borderless document
The following light pattern displays on the control panel:

- The size and type of paper might be inconsistent with the print settings.
Solution
Follow these steps to change the print mode settings.
Open the document you were trying to print, if it is not already open.
Click File
, click Print
, and then click Properties
or Preferences
. The Printer Properties
dialog box displays.
In the Printer Properties dialog box, click the Printing Shortcuts
tab, and then make sure that the paper size that is specified in the Paper size
drop-down menu matches the size of paper that is loaded in the input tray.
In the Paper type
drop-down menu, select the paper type that you are using.
If printing in grayscale, click the Features
tab, and then select Print in grayscale
under Color Options.

Do not print borderless documents in ink-backup mode. Always have two cartridges installed in the printer when printing borderless documents. |
Issue: All lights blink

Solution
Follow these steps to reset the product.
Press the Power button ( 
) to turn on the product.
With the product turned on
, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( 
) to turn it on.
Service the printer

There might be a problem with the product hardware or a component may not be functioning correctly. The next step is to service the product.
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
