HP LaserJet 4200 and 4300 Series Printers - Open VMS Application, PCLXL, Slow Printing and PCL XL Errors
ISSUE:
PCLXL errors and slow printing to an HP LaserJet 4200 or 4300 series printer occur with an Open VMS application. Alternate drivers, such as the PCL5 and Postscript Emulation driver exhibit the same issue. Application is loading fonts into memory via TCP/IP which is producing a PCL XL error. Upgrading the firmware does not resolve the issue.
SOLUTION:
Change the default personality on the control panel from AUTO to PCL. To change the default personality on the control panel, perform the following steps: Press the checkmark
(Select) button to open the menus. |
NOTE:
|
Some settings change rapidly if (Up Arrow) or (Down Arrow) is held down. |
Use the navigation buttons, Up Arrow or Down Arrow, to scroll to CONFIGURE DEVICE
, and then press the checkmark (Select) button.
Use the navigation buttons, Up Arrow or Down Arrow, to scroll to the SYSTEM SETUP
, and then press the checkmark
(Select) button.
Use the navigation buttons, Up Arrow or Down Arrow, to scroll to PERSONALITY
, select the PCL setting, and then press the checkmark
(Select) button. An asterisk (*) appears next to the selection on the display, indicating that it is now the default.
Press Pause/Resume
to exit the menu.
CAUSE:
The personality setting of the front panel was set to AUTO (the default). The server was sending a series of PCL files to download the PCL fonts to the printer. These PCL files do not have a PJL command specifying the language. The printer was mis-routing the files to the PCLXL personality rather than the PCL personality. When the PCLXL personality attempted to parse the PCL5 job, it printed a PCLXL error.
