DESCRIPTION
Users may encounter various error conditions when attempting to install a retail version of Microsoft Windows 98 on certain Deskpro Workstation and Evo Workstation computers having an Adaptec 160 family SCSI controller. The issue occurs because neither the Windows 98 installation diskette or the Windows 98 CD have the correct drivers for Adaptec 160 family SCSI controllers.
Since the installation begins in DOS mode, there must be an appropriate DOS mode driver for the SCSI controller. If not, DOS will not be able to copy the Windows 98 setup files to the SCSI drive and one of the following errors will occur, depending on the setup option the user selects.
-
When a user selects the
Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM
option, the following error message is displayed:
|
Setup cannot install Windows 98 on your computer. An error was detected while trying to read or write to your hard disk.
|
-
When a user selects the
Start computer with CD-ROM support
option and runs
Setup.exe
manually, the system will stop responding during the Setup initialization. No error message will be displayed.
If an appropriate DOS mode driver is available, one the following issues will occur depending on whether Setup.exe is running from an LS-120 drive or a standard floppy drive.
- If the computer has an LS-120 drive installed, a blue screen will occur during Setup with the following error message displayed:
|
Fatal exception OC has occurred at 001D:0000FE84.
|
-
If the computer has a standard floppy drive installed, the setup will complete but Windows 98 will not properly recognize a 160 family SCSI controller. Although the controller will be functional (Windows 98 will use the DOS mode driver), the Windows 98 Device Manager will indicate that the device has a problem (the icon will have an exclamation mark through it when viewed in the
Device Manager
) until a Windows 98 driver has been installed.
|
The Adaptec 160 family SCSI controllers are options for Deskpro Workstation 300, Evo Workstation W6000, and Evo Workstation W8000 models. But Compaq does not ship the computers with Microsoft Windows 98. The computers will not experience this issue when configured as shipped by Compaq.
|
RESOLUTION
Compaq has written a SoftPaq that installs the correct Windows 98 and DOS drivers for the Adaptec 160 family SCSI controllers and resolves the issue. Download the SoftPaq and use the following
Windows 98 Installation Procedure
to complete the Windows 98 installation.
"Family Manager Set Drivers for Ultra 3 SCSI Controllers," Version 1.0, Revision A (or later) is available online from Compaq (SoftPaq Number SP16956). Use the following links to download the SoftPaq and the SoftPaq Instructions.

Windows 98 Installation Procedure
-
Using an operational computer, download SoftPaq 16956 (see above).
-
Locate the downloaded SoftPaq file and run (execute) it to unpack the required files.
-
Read the
Instructions/Information
for instructions on creating the required driver diskette.
-
Insert the Windows 98 installation diskette.
-
Locate the files unzipped in Step 3 and copy the ASPI8U2.SYS file and the ASPICD.SYS file (in the
DOS
directory of the unzipped files) to the Windows 98 installation diskette.
-
Remove the Windows 98 installation diskette and insert a formatted diskette.
- Create a driver diskette by copying the necessary files (unpacked in Step 2) to the formatted diskette.
|
NOTE
|
Both the modified Windows 98 installation diskette and the driver diskette are needed to install Windows 98 on computers as described in the SCOPE section of this document.
|
-
Insert the Windows 98 installation diskette into the Deskpro Workstation 300 and start or restart it.
-
Select Option 1 (Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM) to begin the installation process.
-
Do not remove
the Windows 98 installation diskette.
-
After Windows 98 Setup finishes copying files to the hard drive it will restart the computer.
-
Select Option 2 (Start computer with CD-ROM support) or Option 3 (Start computer without CD-ROM support).
-
Remove the Windows 98 installation diskette and insert the drivers diskette (created in Step 7).
-
Copy the
ADPU160M.INF
file (located in the
WIN98
directory of the driver diskette) to the
C:\WINDOWS\INF
directory.
-
Remove the driver diskette and restart the computer to continue the installation process.
-
When prompted for the SCSI controller driver location, insert the driver diskette (created in Step 7) and set the driver location to the
WIN98
directory on the driver diskette.
The installation should now complete normally and Windows 98 will properly recognize the Adaptec 160 family SCSI controller.
