When an administrator of VMware ESX Server 3.5 Update 2, 3, or 4 or VMware ESX 4.0 attempts to install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 from HP on a ProLiant server as a VMware Virtual Machine, the operating system will not finish the installation process and will stop responding. The following error message will be displayed:

Note: Windows Server 2008 from Microsoft does not fail the installation process. This issue only occurs with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 from HP when the OS is being installed as a Virtual Machine.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant server running VMware ESX 3.5 with Update 2, 3, or 4 or VMware ESX 4.0 attempting to install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 from HP.

RESOLUTION

HP will replace media for Windows Server 2008 from HP under warranty that does not install on ProLiant servers running VMware ESX Server 3.5 with Update, 2, 3, or 4 or VMware ESX 4.0. When calling HP refer to Customer Advisory c01772206 - VMware ESX Server 3.5 Update 2, 3, or 4 and VMware ESX 4.0 - Microsoft Windows Server 2008 from HP Will Not Install on VMware as a Virtual Machine.

In addition, instruct the Customer Support Agent to reference document c01705832 for details on correctly processing the media replacement order.

The affected media includes:

  • Windows Server 2008 from HP (x32 operating systems)
  • Windows Server 2008 from HP (x64 operating systems)

Note: There is no need to request new license key(s); the same key(s) will work with the replacement DVD(s).
